A 4×4 64-QAM multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detector is presented for the application of an IEEE 802.1 In wireless local area network. The detector is the implementation of a novel adaptive tree search (ATS) algorithm, and multiple ATS cores need to be instantiated to achieve the wideband requirement in the 802.11 n standard. Both the ATS algorithm and the architectural considerations are explained. The latency of the detector is 0.75 μs, and the detector has a gate count of 848 k with a total of 19 parallel ATS cores. Each ATS core runs at 67 MHz. Measurement results show that compared with the floating-point ATS algorithm, the fixed-point imple- mentation achieves a loss of 0.9 dB at a BER of 10^-3.

We propose a mode-division multiplexing (MDM) transmission system with differential mode delay (DMD) independent low computational complexity MIMO processing. We adjusted the delay time of the delay units in the equalizer in accordance with the DMD value of the fiber, and the functional imperfection of the mode MUX/DEMUX can be compensated for with low computational complexity by using this technique. Finally, we investigated the crosstalk characteristics of the PLC-based MUX/DEMUX and achieved an experimental WDM-MDM transmission over the C-L band with low MIMO processing complexity even when using a few-mode fiber with a high DMD.

A hexaferrite slant and slot multiple-input multiple-output antenna with miniature antenna elements was simulated, fabricated, and characterized for antenna performance. Measured return loss and isolation were -33.9/-26.6 dB (for antenna 1/antenna 2) and -18.6 dB at 2.45 GHz, respectively. Measured bandwidth was 454/502 MHz at VSWR < 3. Correlation coefficient between antenna elements calculated from experimental S-parameters was less than 0.00085 between 2.4 and 2.5 GHz. Radiation efficiency of the antennas was measured to be 82% at 2.45 GHz. The antennas have two lobes, omnidirectional, and flower patterns for potential mobile device applications. The use of multiple antennas at each side of the radio link has been included in recent drafts and standards such as WLAN, WIMAX, or DVB-T2. The MIMO performances depend on the antenna array characteristics and thus several aspects have to be taken into account to design MIMO antennas. In the literature, many articles can be found in terms of capacity or antenna design, but in this article, different types of antenna arrays for MIMO systems are measured in a reverberation chamber with and without a phantom as a users head. As a result, the MIMO performances are degraded by the user in terms of efficiency, diversity gain, and capacity. Space-time (ST) trellis coded modulation (TCM) represents a high spectral efficiency technique for multiple antennas transmissions over fading channels. In literature, it was shown that ST-TCM technique offers full diversity when the rank criterion is met. However, "brute force" methods were used in almost all previous work to search for full diversity ST-TCM codes. In the present paper, we aim to derive an exact expression for the minimum coding gain distance (CGD) in the case of full diversity ST-TCM codes with minimum memory size, for two transmit antennas. Therefore, we transpose the ST-TCM design rules into operations over the set of modulo-M integer numbers (Z (M) ), between the current trellis state and encoder's input information symbol value, in order to derive the transmitted M-levels phase shift keying modulated (M-PSK) output values. In this context, a new design method is introduced to control the code's minimum CGD value of full diversity ST-TCM schemes.

In this paper, a novel closed-form transmit beamforming scheme is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel. The proposed method follows the idea of maximizing signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio and does not need additional power allocation. An efficient approach is further developed to implement the generalized eigenvalue decomposition required by our method when n (r) < n (t) (n (t) , n (r) and n (e) denote the antenna numbers at the transmitter, the intended receiver and the eavesdropper, respectively), which has lower complexity than the existing approaches. Moreover, we identify some shortcomings of the generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD) based beamforming method, a common beamforming scheme for MIMO wiretap channel. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed method significantly outperforms GSVD-based method when n (e) < n (t) and has almost the same performance as GSVD-based method when n (e) a parts per thousand yen n (t) .

A coherent multiple-input multiple-output architecture is proposed for optical wireless communications (OWCs) to mitigate atmospheric turbulence effects. Transmitter optical signals operate at distinct carrier frequencies to allow the received optical signals to be separately processed. The accumulated phase noise in each transmission branch can then be independently and electrically compensated. Based on the proposed architecture, several diversity combining techniques are used at the receiver end for system performance evaluation. Three different turbulence models are considered in this paper for different scintillation level ranges, including gamma-gamma turbulence, K-distributed turbulence, and negative exponential turbulence. Closed-form error rate expressions are derived using a series expansion approach. The diversity order in the gamma-gamma turbulence channel is found to depend only on the smaller channel parameter, while the K-distributed and negative exponential turbulence channels are found to have the same diversity order. The presented numerical results demonstrate substantial system performance improvement over single-link coherent OWC.

Compute-and-forward (CPF) strategy is one category of network coding in which a relay will compute and forward a linear combination of source messages according to the observed channel coefficients, based on the algebraic structure of lattice codes. Recently, based on the idea of CPF, integer forcing (IF) linear receiver architecture for MIMO system has been proposed to recover different integer combinations of lattice codewords for further original message detection. In this paper, we consider the problem of IF linear receiver design with respect to the channel conditions. Instead of exhaustive search, we present practical and efficient suboptimal algorithms to design the IF coefficient matrix with full rank such that the total achievable rate is maximized, based on the slowest descent method. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms.

In presence of line-of-sight (LOS) propagation, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can achieve maximum capacity over the whole signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region by deploying reconfigurable antenna arrays. In this paper, the moment generating function (MGF) formulas of the mutual information (MI) is obtained for LOS MIMO systems with reconfigurable arrays. Then the exact expression of the mean MI is derived in an easily evaluated form. The results show an excellent match between the theoretical curves and the Monte-Carlo simulations.
