Target detection in cluster based WSN with massive MIMO systems

Neyman-Pearson detection method is presented for a cluster-based wireless sensor network (WSN) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. In this scenario, the sensors are divided into K clusters in which the number of clusters is smaller than the number of receivers antennas. A closed-form optimal solution is derived for the gain of each sensor. Simulation results show that for a constant total transmit power in the network, the probability of detection of the proposed method outperforms the corresponding methods addressed by Jiang et al.

Multicarrier transmission such as OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) is an established technique for radio transmission systems and it can be considered as a promising approach for next generation wireless systems. However, in order to comply with the demand on increasing available data rates in particular in wireless technologies, systems with multiple transmit and receive antennas, also called MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems, have become indispensable for future generations of wireless systems. Due to the strongly increasing demand in high-data rate transmission systems, frequency non-selective MIMO links have reached a state of maturity and frequency selective MIMO links are in the focus of interest. In this field, the combination of MIMO transmission and OFDM can be considered as an essential part of fulfilling the requirements of future generations of wireless systems. However, single-user scenarios have reached a state of maturity. By contrast multiple users' scenarios require substantial further research, where in comparison to ZF (zero-forcing) multiuser transmission techniques, the individual user's channel characteristics are taken into consideration in this contribution. The performed joint optimization of the number of activated MIMO layers and the number of transmitted bits per subcarrier shows that not necessarily all user-specific MIMO layers per subcarrier have to be activated in order to minimize the overall BER under the constraint of a given fixed data throughput.

Cyclo-stationary maximum cross-covariance analysis for exogenously forced environmental systems

The response of an ecological system to external forcings shows marked seasonality and complex time delays. In order to take seasonality into account, the assumption of stationarity inherent in most statistical models for time series is replaced here by more flexible cyclo-stationarity. To describe the dominant modes of the cross-covariance structure of the system and the forcing, temporal (orthonormal) patterns are derived. They are estimated by a singular value decomposition of the cyclo-stationary sample cross-covariance matrix. These patterns allow to formulate a prediction scheme for the system once the forcing is known. The method has comparatively little tendency for multi-collinearity, so that it is well applicable also for multivariate settings and shorter data records. The method is illustrated for an aquatic ecosystem with distinct phases of a biological succession.

Since the capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems increases linearly with the minimum number of antennas at both, the transmitter as well as the receiver side, MIMO systems have attracted a lot of attention for both frequency and non-frequency selective channels and reached a state of maturity. By contrast, MIMO-aided multiple-user systems require substantial further research. In comparison to zero-forcing (ZF) multiuser transmission techniques, where all users are treated jointly, the investigated singular value decomposition (SVD) assisted DL multiuser MIMO solution takes the individual user's channel characteristics into account. In analogy to bit-interleaved coded irregular modulation, we introduce a MIMO-BICM scheme, where different user-specific signal constellations and mapping arrangement were used within a single codeword. Extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts are used for analyzing and optimizing the convergence behaviour of the iterative demapping and decoding. Our results show that in order to achieve the best bit-error rate, not necessarily all user-specific MIMO layers have to be activated.

Automatic modulation classification using bimodal parallel multichannel deep learning framework for spatial multiplexing MIMO system

In recent years, automatic modulation classification (AMC) has proved its importance for the military as well as civil applications and deep learning (DL) based AMC has attracted wide attention. But existing methods neglect to consider the advantages of both multimodality and complementarities simultaneously in a single DL framework for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. To mitigate this, bimodal multichannel configurable DL-based AMC has been presented for the MIMO system under perfect channel state information with zero forcing equalizer. The proposed DL framework consists of two parallel structures of multichannel convolutional layers in which one multichannel structure is fed with in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) as first modal information while another multichannel structure accepts amplitude/phase as second modal information. Features extracted from this parallel structure then pass through long short-term memory (LSTM) layers for further extracting temporal information effectively. Finally, classification is accomplished through fully connected layers. Simulation results manifest the robustness of the proposed framework that achieves an average accuracy of about 0.6% to 12% higher compared to the state-of-the-art DL models. Simulations also illustrate the impact of antenna diversities with spatial multiplexing on the classification. (c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Within the last years the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology has revolutionized the optical fibre community. Theoretically, the concept of MIMO is well understood and shows some similarities to wireless MIMO systems. However, practical implementations of optical components are in the focus of interest of substantial research. Optical couplers have long been used as passive optical components also being able to combine or split SISO (single-input single-output) data transmission. They have been proven to be well suited for the optical MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) transmission despite their insertion losses and asymmetries. Nowadays, next to optical couplers, Photonic Lanterns (PLs) have attracted a lot of attention in the research community as they offer the benefit of a low loss transition from the input fibers to the modes supported by the waveguide at its output. Therefore they seem to be highly beneficial for optical MIMO communication. In this contribution mode coupling and splitting devices such as PLs and fusion couplers have been analysed in a testbed with regard to their respective MIMO suitability. Based on the obtained results, a simplified time-domain MIMO simulation model including PLs for mode-combining at the transmitter side as well as mode-splitting at the receiver side is elaborated. Our results obtained by the simulated bit-error rate (BER) performance show that PLs are well suited for the optical MIMO transmission.

In this paper we evaluate a recently proposed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system called the Layered Steered Space-Time Codes (LSSTC). The LSSTC system is evaluated for multi-user environments where scheduling can be used to increase the system capacity by harnessing the multi-user diversity. This evaluation is done by comparing the capacity and the probability of error for several combinations of algorithms and criteria for scheduling users' data. The results obtained show that many of the scheduling criteria derived in literature does not perform well with the LSSTC system. Instead, a scheduling criterion that directly coincides with the detection mechanism of the LSSTC receiver is derived. This scheduling criterion can jointly maximize the capacity and minimize the error probability. Also we derive a formula for the PDF of the maximum preprocessing SNR for a Greedy-based multi-user LSSTC.

In this paper, we analyze the performance of multi-cellular MIMO systems with co-channel interference from users within the same cell as well as from other cells. We initially assume that user power levels are deterministic. Then, we extend the channel model to include shadowing and path loss along with power control, resulting in a statistical model for user powers. We derive easily computable closed form outage probability expressions in the form of finite sums for both cases. It is found that using antennas on the receiver side results in better performance since transmit diversity does not combat interference from same cell users. It is also shown that the outage capacity increases more than linearly with increasing order of diversity.

In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, transmit antenna selection is a very promising technique for reducing implementation cost and computational complexity. In this paper, we propose two novel fast near-optimal antenna selection algorithms based on channel capacity maximization, whose core idea is to use an effective iterative process to reduce computational complexity and retain near-optimal performance. Compared with the conventional algorithm, the proposed algorithms have lower computational complexity and achieve almost the same capacity and bit-error rate (BER) performance as the optimal one. In particular, the BER performance gain of the proposed algorithms is much larger than the conventional algorithms in correlated fading channels. Finally, computer simulations are presented to validate and demonstrate performance of our algorithms.
