A multiresolution approach is developed to model the spatio-temporal dispersion of geospatial data such as evolution of population, epidemics, dispersion of chemical/biological agents subsequent to natural or man-made disasters, etc. The basic idea is to make use of diffusion equations with spatially and temporally varying diffusion coefficient to model the evolution of geospatial activities. At the heart of our approach is a recently developed powerful averaging process that allows construction of a global family of local independent approximations with a desired order of continuity and quantifying error bounds. The ability to have independent local approximations enables intuitive and effecient approximation with high accuracy and compression ratio. Numerical simulation results are presented to show the efficacy of the presented ideas.

Design, Analysis and Additive Manufacturing of Porous Structures for Biocompatible Micro-Scale Scaffolds

Advancements in the fields of biocompatible materials, manufacturing processes, computational methods and medicine have led to the emergence of a new field: micro-scale scaffolds for bone replacement and regeneration. Yet most such scaffolds produced today are characterized by very basic geometry, and their microstructure differs greatly from that of the actual tissue they are intended to replace. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for generating micro-scale scaffolds based on processing actual micro-CT images and then reconstructing a highly accurate geometrical model. This model is manufactured by means of a state-of-the-art 3D additive manufacturing process from biocompatible materials. At the micro-scale level, these scaffolds are very similar to the original tissue, thus interfacing better with the surrounding tissue and facilitating more efficient rehabilitation for the patient. Moreover, the approach facilitates the design and manufacture of patient-specific scaffolds which can copy patients’ exact structural and mechanical characteristics, taking into account their physical condition and medical history. By means of multi-resolution volumetric modeling methods, scaffold porosity can also be adapted according to specific mechanical requirements. The process of designing and manufacturing micro-scale scaffolds involves five major stages: (a) building a volumetric multi-resolution model from micro-CT images; (b) generation of surface geometric model in STL format; (c) additive manufacturing of the scaffold; (d) scaffold shape verification relative to the geometric design; and (e) verification of mechanical properties through finite element analysis. In this research, all the proposed stages of the approach were tested. The input included micro-CT scans of porous ceramic structure, which is quite similar to commercial porous scaffolds. The results show that the proposed method is feasible for design and manufacture of micro-scale scaffolds.

Extensive research has been carried out in multiresolution models for many decades. The tendency in recent years has been to harness the potential of GPUs to perform the level-of-detail extraction on graphics hardware. The aim of this work is to present a new level-of-detail scheme based on triangles which is both simple and efficient. In this approach, the extraction process updates vertices instead of indices, thus providing a perfect framework for adapting the algorithms to work completely on GPU shaders. One of the key aspects of our proposal is the need for just a single rendering pass in order to obtain the desired geometry. Moreover, coherence among the different approximations is maximized by means of a symmetric extraction algorithm, which performs the same process when refining and coarsening the mesh. Lastly, we also introduce different uses of the scheme to offer continuous and view-dependent resolution.

The main problem in the real-time rendering of vegetation is the massive amount of primitives to be rendered. These primitives are needed to fully describe the geometry of the plants. However, some of them are not visible depending on the location of the viewer. This work focuses on this fact to interactively reduce the amount of geometry needed to represent the foliage through a view-dependent multiresolution scheme. Following a camera-dependent criterion, the less visible parts of the foliage are detected in real time, and rendered with a decreased level of detail for improving efficiency. This fact considerably reduces the extraction and the visualization time of the geometry that represents the foliage. The novelty of the presented method is that its design is oriented to being efficient on massively parallel architectures, such as the graphics processing unit. Moreover, we introduce a new management system for efficiently handling level of detail objects in order to improve performance for forest scenes. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes a multi-resolution framework for application of system dynamics modeling to sustainable manufacturing. Sustainable manufacturing involves interaction of four complex systems namely manufacturing, environmental, financial, and social domains. The proposed framework integrates model components corresponding to the four major domains. Conceptual models are proposed at two levels of resolution for each of the four domains with models provided in this paper for the manufacturing domain.

In this paper, we propose an efficient method to generate optimal multiresolution models for deforming mesh sequence. By this method we define the importance degree of a triangle to be embedded into the quadric error metric (QEM) as a weight parameter, so that the new metric cannot only measure distance error but also reflect geometric variation of local areas. We append a deformation degree weight to the aggregated edge contraction cost for the whole animation. This new metric can preserve not only the model's individual geometric features, but also the features only appeared during the deforming animation. In addition, a mesh optimization method has also been proposed to allow visual distortion of the simplified models to be further alleviated. Our approach is efficient in operation, easy for implementation, and as a result a good quality of dynamic approximations with well-preserved fine details can be generated at any given frame on average.

An In-Network Querying Framework for Wireless Sensor Networks

In contrast to traditional wireless sensor network (WSN) applications that perform only data collection and aggregation, the new generation of information processing applications such as pursuit-evasion games, tracking, evacuation, and disaster relief applications require in-network information storage and querying. Due to the resource limitations of WSNs, it is challenging to implement in-network querying in a distributed, lightweight, resilient, and energy-efficient manner. We address these challenges by exploiting location information and the geometry of the network and propose an in-network querying framework, namely, the Distributed Quad-Tree (DQT). DQT is distance sensitive for querying of an event: the cost of answering a query for an event is at most a constant factor (2 root 2 in our case) of the distance "d" to the event. DQT construction is local and does not require any communication. Moreover, due to its minimalist infrastructure and stateless nature, DQT shows graceful resilience to node failures and topology changes. Since event-based querying is inherently limited to the anticipated types of inquiries, we further extend our framework to achieve complex range-based querying. To this end, we use a multiresolution algorithm, which is optimal with respect to least square errors that models the data in a decentralized way. Our model-based scheme answers queries with approximate values accompanied by certainty levels with increased resolution at lower layers of the DQT hierarchy. Our analysis and experiments show that our framework achieves distance sensitivity and resiliency for event-based querying, as well as greatly reduces the cost of complex range querying.

The paper describes a mehod for compression of geometry data stream in distributed parallel rendering systems. First this paper uses edge collapse method with discrete curvature error metric to construct multi-resolution models, and use variable quantization of precision to compression 3-dimensional models;then models were provided to view-dependent progressive transmission method to deal with, and implement it with a distributed parallel rendering system for virtual manufacturing;While this paper use the parallelogram prediction of vertex coordinates and the angular space within one sextant of normal to compress 3-dimensional models, alleviating network bandwidth bottleneck.

A necessary step to building effective writing skill training system requires developing good methods for modeling human skill adequately. A number of groups have represented character information in various languages for writing skill based on trajectory information. These methods are often data intensive, tedious to implement and do not encode force information. To overcome these restrictions a novel present a novel modeling methodology that has good accuracy, robustness, flexibility and encodes force information involved in writing characters. This modeling methodology, based on Global-Local Approximation technique, has the capability to provide temporal force or position information independent of time, decoupling velocity information of the sample data used to capture skilled tasks. This modeling approach can be extended many human skilled tasks such as surgery, art and sports
