Artificial systems obtain knowledge from the real world through sensors. The nature of the transducer, the location in space and the acquisition time must be considered to define the perceived state of the environment. Example base techniques are able to learn from the system experience. They are specially adequate for a complex multi-sensor system which lacks a formal knowledge background. Data logging from diverse sensors, signal feature extraction, identification methods and evaluation strategies for the results have been integrated in a unique programming environment. Some critical aspects of empirical methods, such as automatic feature generation and selection or comparison of pattern recognition procedures, are approached from a global point of view. Some results obtained monitoring tool machines for the estimation of tool wear validate the presented work.

On the foundation of an existing system for sensor data integration into robot controls, a concept for flexible multisensor fusion and integration is designed and implemented. By means of three applications of different complexities, the efficiency of the software system is demonstrated. The system consists of a hierarchic structure with three levels and can be divided into the two main modules: Control and Sensing. By configuration of the topology, the methods and parameters of these main modules, the user can easily adapt the system for different applications in production. Thus the expenditure for installation, setting up and conversion of the multisensor system is reduced to a minimum.

A multisensor integration-Based Complementary Tool for Monitoring Recovery Progress of Anterior Cruciate Ligament-Reconstructed Subjects

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) trauma, being one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries in sports, leads to knee joint instability and causes ambulation impairments. A careful monitoring of the progress of recovery after ACL reconstruction is crucial for minimizing postoperative complications and reinjuries. This research is aimed at designing a complementary tool to assess the recovery status and knee dynamics during the rehabilitation period after ACL reconstruction. The prototype includes wireless body-mounted motion sensors for kinematics measurements, surface electromyography system for muscle activity measurements, a video camera for recording trial activities and custom-developed intelligent system software that provides classification of the progress of the recovery and visual biofeedback during rehabilitation. The subjects' recovery stages are classified based on combined features from sensors' data, using an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system. The visual biofeedback provides monitoring of different signals simultaneously in order to help in detecting the intra and intersubject variability and correlation between the knee joint dynamics and muscle activities. The promising results of this initial study for assessing the ambulation at various speeds showcase the prospects of using the proposed system as part of existing rehabilitation monitoring procedures to achieve a more effective and timely recovery of ACL-reconstructed subjects.

A manipulator plays Jenga -: Applying multisensor integration in industrial manipulation control

This article describes an overview of a prototypical manipulation control system, which is able to play Jenga. The implementation of the Jenga game has been chosen to verify the integration of existing concepts such as force/torque control, distance control, real-time behavior of distributed control systems, sensor data fusion, online trajectory computation, and visual servoing in one exhibit. This exhibit has no direct industrial use, but it clearly shows the potential of multisensor integration and opens new possibilities for industrial manipulation. The scope of these kinds of systems is certainly not limited to industrial manipulation applications, e.g., the potential in the field of medical robotics is also very high and has to be investigated. A key part of this work is the online trajectory generator. Within this work, a second-order generator (rectangular acceleration signals) has been applied (Kroger et al., 2007), but, for the aim of bringing the mentioned concepts into industrial practice, a jerk-limited generator will be necessary. This and further research on sensor fusion methods will be a major focus of our future work. Besides, the Jenga game could be used as an international benchmark for manipulation control concepts (including force/torque control, distance control, and visual servoing). It is well-known and, since the manufacturer (Hasbro, 2007) has only one place of production, the game is exactly the same all over the world.

The integration of multiple sensors for target tracking and resource management has been intensely investigated and several effective techniques have been developed. These conventional techniques employ decision-directed logic and are very complex but have the potential to improve performance. For most systems, each sensor provides its information to a central location where the integration occurs. The central track is employed for system decisions and it is typically not used by the individual sensors. This low level of integration provides a manageable tracking environment but restricts the potential for system improvement. An Electronically Scanned Array (ESA) is highly controllable and has the ability to greatly enhance tracking performance. Resource allocation for an ESA is critical since it must support multiple functions, and several modern techniques have been developed to enhance its performance as a stand-alone sensor by effectively managing its time-energy budget. The integration of an ESA with other sensors can further enhance the tracking and reduce the resource allocation requirements of the ESA. This paper presents a technique for ESA resource management through the use of multisensor integration. The proposed technique avoids the decision-directed logic associated with conventional techniques by employing the Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) algorithm. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of this modern integration technique.

We propose a feature extraction method for lane changes of other traffic participants. According to previous research, over 90 % of car crashes are caused by human mistakes, and lane changes are the main factor. Therefore, if an intelligent system can predict a lane change and alarm a driver before another vehicle crosses the center line, this can contribute to reducing the accident rate. The main contribution of this work is to propose a feature extraction method using the multisensor system which consists of a position sensor and a laser scanner with line markings information. For a lane change prediction of other traffic participants, the most effective features are a lateral position and velocity with respect to a center line. We installed the sensor system to the primary vehicle and measured positions of other traffic participants while the primary vehicle drives on a highway. We extracted the features as the distance with respect to the center line and the lateral velocity of other vehicles using the measurement data. We confirmed that our feature extraction method has an enough accuracy for the lane change prediction.

Overcoming barriers to social media use through multisensor integration in emergency management systems

For over a decade, the field of crisis informatics has observed novel, ad hoc uses of social media among citizens and digital volunteers while noting barriers that impede social media use among municipal responders during crises. These barriers include a lack of tools for processing social media data, a lack of staff to use these tools, and a lack of trust in information gathered from citizens. However, while studies address the collection, processing, and use of social media per se, research continues to overlook the necessity of integrating information gathered from social media and existing information sources relied on by responders working across municipal agencies. Through scenario-based interviews with municipal responders, this study observes that objectives of early warning and proactive emergency response motivate uses of social media during periods of stability to address gaps in information reported by 911 callers, on-scene responders, and various physical sensors. To accomplish these objectives, upstream PSAP staff must process information from multiple physical and social sensors, cue other sensors to verify untrusted reports, and integrate multisensor information for dispatch to downstream first responders, emergency managers, and PIOs. Together, these findings suggest that overcoming barriers to social media use resulting from a lack of tools, staff, and trust requires new and existing sociotechnical infrastructures that facilitate intra- and inter-organizational processes of multisensor integration across periods of stability and crisis.

multisensor fusion and integration is a rapidly evolving research area and requires interdisciplinary knowledge in control theory, signal processing, artificial intelligence, probability and statistics, etc. The advantages gained through the use of redundant, complementary, or more timely information in a system can provide more reliable and accurate information. This paper provides an overview of current sensor technologies and describes the paradigm of multisensor fusion and integration as well as fusion techniques at different fusion levels. Applications of multisensor fusion in robotics, biomedical system, equipment monitoring, remote sensing, and transportation system are also discussed. Finally, future research directions of multisensor fusion technology including microsensors, smart sensors, and adaptive fusion techniques are presented.
