The Space Integrated controls Experiment (SPICE) program has developed one of the premier testbeds in the country for controls-structures interaction research. Four years of hardware and software development and integration efforts were completed in May 1993. Completion of these efforts brought the testbed on-line to begin the first phase of testing, demonstration of active structural control on a representative precision optical structure. In June 1993, the program performed a successful, full scale demonstration of active, global structural control for the first time. The final test series was completed in August 1993 achieving 75 to 1 attenuation of the RMS LOS jitter in the 5-128 Hz frequency band. This paper describes the testbed, controlsystem final design process, software and hardware implementation, test execution and results.

Industrial robot applications have seen remarkable growth in numbers and in diversity of uses. In configuration, it is also slowly changing from cartesian and cylindrical coordinate types to articulated one mainly due to the fact that articulated robot arms are more flexible and versatile. From the view point of control, however, arms of this type possess certain inherent problems. One concerns the nonlinear relation between the position and orientation of the robot hand and the rotational angles of the joints of the arm. Another problem concerns the existence of singular points in the state space of joints, which reduces the robot's degree of freedom. Although it has sometimes been claimed that redundant arms can effectively overcome the problem of singularity and increase flexibility and versatility, these have yet to be studied in full. In this paper, the manipulatability and redundancy of multi-articulated robot arms are analyzed and utilization of redundancy is discussed. Experimental results are also presented concerning the utilization of redundancy for trajectory control with provisions for an obstacle.

This is a simulation study on controlling a Kaibel distillation column with model predictive control (MPC). A Kaibel distillation column has several advantages compared with conventional binary column setups. The Kaibel column separates a feed stream into four product streams using only a single column shell. The distillation process is a multivariable process which leads to a multivariablecontrol problem. The objective for optimal operation of the column is chosen to be minimization of the total impurity flow. An off-line optimization on a mathematical model leads to temperature setpoints to be used by a controller. An MPC generally obtain less total impurity flow compared to conventional decentralized control when the distillation column is exposed to disturbances. It also counteract process interactions better than decentralized control.

This paper describes a new multivariable self-tuning controller which is able to handle the system with different time delays between each of the input-output pairs, and deal with the system with unknown or varying time delays. The proposed controller not only moves the closedloop-system poles to the prespecified locations but also decouples the multivariablesystem. It. can track time varying reference signals and eliminate tracking errors. In addition an implicit algorithm is proposed under certain conditions. The controller is demonstrated using a concentration-flow process, a paper machine head box and an unstable and nonminimum phase system having different time delays.

The multivariable frequency domain design method is playing an increasingly important role in computer-aided controlsystem design and it depends on achieving a diagonally-dominant system to complete the design with success. The pseudodomination proposed in this paper enables us to design dynamic compensator to improve the dominance of the compensated plant over an extended range of frequencies. The procedure arises from Hawkins's generalising pseudodiagonalisation in a number of directions; in particular, the calculation is reduced and some important messages that provide a real facilitation to the design can be easily gotten at in computational process. Three examples designed interactively by computer are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the improved algorithm.
