A Loop Pairing Method for multivariable control systems Under a Multi-Objective Optimization Approach

This paper proposes a new method for the selection of input-output pairing in decentralized control structures for multivariable systems. This method proposes the input-output pairing problem as a multi-objective optimization problem (MOP). For each control structure and loop pairing analyzed, a different design concept is proposed and a MOP is stated. All MOPs share the same design objectives, and Pareto fronts associated with each design concept can be compared globally under a multi-objective (MO) approach. The design objectives were chosen for the MOP, as well as the designer's preferences, have an important role in selecting a certain loop pairing. The main contribution of the proposed approach is that it enables a systematic analysis of the conflicts between the objectives and the performance of a control system. The method enables selecting a certain input-output pairing and a suitable tuning of the controller directly using information that a designer can interpret. To show the application of the methodology, two loop pairing examples are presented, one of them for a two-input-output system (with four scenarios of analysis), and the other for a three-input-output system (with one scenario of analysis). Through the examples presented in this paper, it is evident how the designer can affect the loop pairing to be used, either by choosing the objectives or preferences.

A study of control strategy for the bin system with tube mill in the coal fired power station

The pulverized coal systems with tube mills are widely used in coal fired power plants. As there are many controlled variables and disturbances in this system, and startup and shutdown of the system is frequent and the dynamic characteristic of the controlled plant is also extraordinary, the automatic control system for this kind of pulverized coal system is not ideally implemented for long. The authors of this paper investigated and tested a pulverized coal system with tube mill in Nanjing Thermal Power Station, and based on various different controlled plants and control objectives, proposed rather independent control subsystems. These subsystems can organize a whole automatic control system of pulverized coal system that can be used in different conditions. The control system presented in this paper has worked well since it was put into operation in May 1998, and good economic benefits have been acquired. Recent control system research has resulted in new methods for assessing stability and performance robustness with respect to plant and controller uncertainty. The emphasis has been on using frequency domain matrix singular values for multi-input/multi-output systems. Problems originating from aircraft flight control systems have been an important motivation for these developments, and applications are currently being carried out at government research centers and in industry. These new robustness methods are, however, only slowly becoming part of the working flight control designer′s practical tools. Before becoming routine, means must be provided for better physical insight. This paper presents a distinctly different interpretation based on literal (symbolic) formulations of singular values. This approach is an outgrowth of and is related to classical multivariable control systems methods based on coupling numerators. A lateral-directional flight control system design for an advanced fighter is used as an example. Robustness of stability with respect to input uncertainties is first assessed using standard numerical techniques. Literal approximations are then given for open- and closed-loop singular values. The literal approximations are consistent with the numerical results. More importantly, they provide a means for decomposing and diagnosing robustness problems by providing explicit connections to critical aircraft and controller parameters. Both unstructured and structured uncertainties are treated, using respectively literal approximations of regular and structured singular values. © 1989 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF THE SEGMENT ALIGNMENT control-system FOR THE 10-METER TELESCOPE

The W. M. Keck Observatory Ten-Meter Telescope (TMT) will be a high-performance astronomical telescope capable of unprecedented ground-based observations. One of the unique features of the TMT is its primary mirror which is composed of 36 hexagonal segments. A segment alignment control system will be used to achieve the optical quality of a glass monolith in the segmented primary mirror. The problems associated with the accurate pointing and imaging of a large flexible telescope such as the TMT are quite different from those posed by traditional rigid telescopes. These problems arise from two main sources: structural dynamic effects, such as enhanced sensitivity to external disturbances, and interactions between the segment alignment control system and the telescope structure. This study consists of a combined structural and control system analysis based upon mathematical models of the TMT structure, the segment alignment control system, and the aerodynamic loads on the primary mirror that are induced by the wind. Data for the structural model were derived from the most recent design iteration available during the time frame of the study. Actual wind velocities measured at three observatory sites were used to develop a generic model of the power spectrum of forces generated by wind loads. Information about the r.m.s. mirror figure errors and limits on the bandwidth of the control system as it is currently implemented are presented.

Modelling and control scheme of the ball-plate trajectory-tracking pneumatic system with a touch screen and a rotary cylinder

For the multivariable and complicated ball-plate control system, in this study a touch screen and a rotary pneumatic cylinder are adopted instead of a camera and a step motor, respectively. A touch screen is utilised to collect the ball coordinates, and it is of high precision, rapid response and strong anti-interference ability. Using the rotary-cylinder position pneumatic servo mechanism to actuate the ball-plate system, it has high control precision, large speed variation range and good low-speed characteristics. Models of the rotary-cylinder servo mechanism and the ball-plate system are, respectively, built. For the non-linearity of the system, it is hard to attain good performance by using the traditional control method, so the controller is designed with a state observer and fuzzy control algorithm. Simulation results show that it has good dynamic and static characteristics with the proposed control method. And a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) model is further built to realise the steady run of the system.

A Novel Optimal control and Management Strategy of Stand-Alone Hybrid PV/Wind/Diesel Power system

This paper presents a new control and management strategy of a stand-alone hybrid photovoltaic/wind/diesel power system. The model is considered as a one multi-input single-output system, where both controllers of the wind and the solar systems are tuned simultaneously by the resolution of a multi-objective optimization problem using genetic algorithm. The produced energy is managed over a switching method to meet the consumer demand. The proposed approach permits advantageous energy optimization of the hybrid system and gives better performances compared to the traditional decentralized control methods. The control and management strategy is applied to design a hybrid power system for a farm located in Skikda Algeria, with a load demand of 27.4 kWh/day. The simulation results prove the effectiveness of the presented approach compared to conventional one.

This article proposes an extension of the Total Energy control system (TECS), originally developed in the early 1980s. It proposes modifications on the TECS flight control law throttle control channel in terms of its command variable and feedback loops, accounting for integration aspects related to the flight and engine control systems, especially the consideration of engine related variables. This is achieved by adopting a two degree of freedom multivariable control law architecture. The methods used provide a systematic procedure for the TECS design problem and also allow for an extension of the original architecture preserving its core features. The controllers are computed using linear design methods issued from robust control theory. This paper presents how this framework allows for the consideration of control law robustness and performance properties as well as the evaluation of uncertainty regarding the plant modeling, when dealing with highly integrated control systems. The results are illustrated and discussed with the help of a set of simulations which accounts for dedicated aircraft and engine models.

Coal ball mill pulverizing system is a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system characterized with strong couplings and disturbances. In the coal ball mill control system, the three loops possess different dynamics with remarkable lag times. In this paper, we proposed a mixed control scheme based on loop priority (namely the outlet temperature loop, the inlet pressure loop, the pressure difference loop) considering the principle of the safe-stability-quality. The outlet temperature loop employees the feedforward compensation to suppress the interaction from the other two loops;the inlet pressure loop uses the disturbance observer based structure to eliminate internal and external disturbances because the characteristics of the fast response from recycling air flow rate to the inlet pressure is fit to cancel the estimated disturbances;The pressure difference loop controller is designed based on the dominant internal disturbance since it has the lowest priority. The three loop controllers are all in the form of two-degrees-of-freedom PID in order to get a better trade-off between set-point tracking and disturbance rejection. The proposed approach can maintain stable operation of the ball mill, and it is readily available to industrial practitioners and DCS software. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of this control strategy.

Advanced Thickness Gauge control system for Tandem Cold Mill

A new gauge control system has been developed and applied to a five stand tandem cold mill at Kakogawa Works. The system includes the following features: (a) Digital speed regulators which drive the roll with good accuracy; (b) A totally automatic gauge control (TAGC) based on a multivariable control method which regulates the exit gauge at each stand from threading to tailing out state; (c) Roll eccentricity control (REC) at first stand based on the recursive identification procedure; and (d) Flying gauge change (FGC) which alters the speed of each stand resulting in the synchronization of the motion of a screw down motor. Direct digital control is carried out by the newly introduced programmable logic controllers and digital automatic speed regulators. This advanced thickness control system contributes to the improvement of thickness accuracy, productivity, and stabilization of rolling. TAGC has reduced the off gauge length to about 70 % in the threading and tailing out state. REC has reduced thickness deviation due to roll eccentricity to half and FGC with a maximum 0.6 mm gauge change is being used in commercial production.

Hierarchical computer control system for continuously operating large distribution systems

The concept of an automatic control system for a distribution system for solid matter was developed by a systematic approach. The advantage of this is its very clear structure which supports a realization with a distributed computer control system. The basic idea is the application of balance control loops for every level of the tree-formed structure. Thus the internal structure of the distribution system beyond a branch can be hidden from the respective superior levels (principle of aggregation) and the problems of the couplings between all control loops can be solved. The grouping of the total control tasks on different levels leads to a concept for the realization of the automation system with Programmable Logic controllers (PLCs).
