Interactive multiviewvideo streaming (IMVS) is an application that streams to a client one out of N available video views for observation, but client can periodically request switches to neighboring views as the video is played back uninterrupted in time. Previous IMVS works focused on the design of a frame structure at encoding time, trading off expected transmission rate with storage, without knowing the exact view trajectory a client may select at stream time. None of the existing IMVS schemes, however, explicitly addressed the network delay problem, and so a client will suffer a round trip time (RTT) delay for each requested view-switch. In this paper, we optimize frame structure for a bounded RTT, so that a client can switch to neighboring views as the video is played back without view-switching delay. The key idea is to send additional views likely to be requested by a client within one RTT beyond the current requested view. Each required set of contiguous views (corresponding to a given current requested single view) are pre-encoded using frames of previously transmitted set of views as predictors to lower transmission rate. Using I-, P- and distributed source coding (DSC) frames, we first formulate the structure design problem as a Lagrangian minimization for a desired bandwidth/storage tradeoff. We then develop a low-complexity greedy algorithm to automatically generate a good structure. Experimental results show that for the same storage cost, the transmission rate of the proposed structure can be 42% lower than that of I-frame-only structure, and 8% lower than that of the structure without DSC frames.

Mode decision method plays an important role in multiview video coding for improving the coding efficiency. In this paper, an efficient inter mode decision method based on inter-frame modes statistical analysis is presented. By utilizing the correlation factor, the inter 8x8 mode is early skipped. The proposed algorithm can achieve a large reduce of the computational complexity with negligible loss of PSNR. Experimental results show the validity of our algorithm. This master thesis presents a novel Hierarchical Rate Control – HRC – for the multiview video coding standard targeting an increased bandwidth usage and high video quality. The HRC is designed to jointly address the rate control at both framelevel and Basic Unit (BU)-level. This scheme is able to exploit the bitrate distribution correlation with neighboring frames to efficiently predict the future bitrate behavior by employing a Model Predictive Control that defines a proper control action through QP (Quantization Parameter) adaptation. To provide a fine-grained tuning, the QP is further adapted within each frame by a Markov Decision Process implemented at BU-level able to take into consideration a map of the Regions of Interest. A coupled frame/BU-level feedback is performed in order to guarantee the system consistency. A Reinforcement Learning method is responsible for updating the Model Predictive Control and the Markov Decision Process parameters. Experimental results show the superiority of the Hierarchical Rate Control compared to state-of-the-art solutions, in terms of bitrate allocation accuracy and rate-distortion, while delivering smooth video quality at both frame and Basic Unit levels. ...

Interactive selection of the desired viewpoint is one important feature in multiviewvideo streaming. When receivers differ in the number of simultaneously displayed views, it is challenging to optimize the multiviewcoding structure particularly when it comes to the use of inter-view prediction and anchor picture frequency. This paper presents a coding and transmission scheme for streaming to clients of different display capabilities. The scheme saves transmission bandwidth by sending only those views that are displayed in a receiver. Furthermore, the scheme enables viewpoint switching through inter-view-predicted redundant pictures representing different sets of views being switched from and switched to. When switching happens at a switch point, an appropriate redundant picture is adaptively chosen based on which views were transmitted before and will be transmitted after the switch point. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme improves the rate-distortion (RD) performance compared to simple anchor picture insertion.
