Virtual reality (VR) systems employ multiview cameras or camera rigs to capture a scene from the entire 360-degree perspective. Due to computational or latency constraints, it might not be possible to stitch multiview videos into a single video sequence prior to encoding. In this paper we investigate the coding and streaming of multiview VR video content. We present a standard-compliant method where we first divide the camera views into two types: Primary views represent a subset of camera views with lower resolution and non-overlapping (minimally overlapping) content which cover the entire 360-degree field-of-view to guarantee immediate monoscopic viewing during very rapid head movements. Auxiliary views consist of remaining camera views with higher resolution which produce overlapping content with the primary views and are additionally used for stereoscopic viewing. Based on this categorization, we propose a coding arrangement in which, the primary views are independently coded in the base layer and the additional auxiliary views are coded as an enhancement layer, using inter-layer prediction from primary views. The proposed system not only meets the low latency requirements of VR systems, but also conforms to the existing multilayer extensions of the High Efficiency video coding standard. Simulation results show that the coding and streaming performance of the proposed scheme is significantly improved compared to earlier methods.

This work presents an energy-efficient memory hierarchy for Motion and Disparity Estimation on multiview video coding employing a Reference Frames-Centered Data Reuse (RCDR) scheme. In RCDR the reference search window becomes the center of the motion/disparity estimation processing flow and calls for processing all blocks requesting its data. By doing so, RCDR avoids multiple search window retransmissions leading to reduced number of external memory accesses, thus memory energy reduction. To deal with out-of-order processing and further reduce external memory traffic, a statistics-based partial results compressor is developed. The on-chip video memory energy is reduced by employing a statistical power gating scheme and candidate blocks reordering. Experimental results show that our reference-centered memory hierarchy outperforms the state-of-the-art [7][13] by providing reduction of up to 71% for external memory energy, 88% on-chip memory static energy, and 65% on-chip memory dynamic energy.

A low-power architecture for an on-chip multi-banked video memory for motion and disparity estimation in multiview video coding is proposed. The memory organization (size, banks, sectors, etc.) is driven by an extensive analysis of memory-usage behavior for various 3D-video sequences. Considering a multiple-sleep state model, an application-aware power management scheme is employed to reduce the leakage energy of the on-chip memory. The knowledge of motion and disparity estimation algorithm in conjunction with video properties are considered to predict the memory requirements of each Macroblock. A cost function is evaluated to determine an appropriate sleep mode for the idle memory sectors, while considering the wakeup overhead (latency and energy). The complete motion and disparity estimation architecture is implemented in a 65nm low power IBM technology. The experiments (for various test video sequences) demonstrate that our architecture provides up to 80% leakage energy reduction compared to state-of-the-art. Our scheme processes motion and disparity estimation of four HD1080p views encoding at 30fps with a power consumption of 57mW.

The just noticeable distortion (JND) map is a useful tool for perceptual video coding. However, direct calculation of the JND map incurs high complexity, and the problem is aggravated in multiview video coding. In this paper, the motion and disparity vectors obtained during the video coding are employed to predict the JND maps in order to reduce the complexity. The error propagation of the prediction is studied and a JND block refreshing approach is proposed, when the prediction is not satisfactory, to alleviate the influence of the error propagation. The performance of the proposed JND prediction method is evaluated in a perceptual MVC framework, where the prediction residuals are tuned according to the JND thresholds to save the bits without affecting the perceptual quality. Experimental results show that the JND prediction method has better accuracy and lower complexity than an existing JND synthesis method. In addition, the proposed method leads to negligible degradation of the coding performance, compared to the direct JND method.

In this paper, we analyze focus mismatches among cameras utilized in a multiview system, and propose techniques to efficiently apply our previously proposed adaptive reference filtering (ARF) scheme to inter-view prediction in multiview video coding (MVC). We show that, with heterogeneous focus setting, the differences exhibit in images captured by different cameras can be represented in terms of the focus setting mismatches (view-dependency) and the depths of objects (depth-dependency). We then analyze the performance of the previously proposed ARF in MVC inter-view prediction. The gains in coding efficiency show a strong view-wise variation.. Furthermore, the estimated filter coefficients demonstrate strong correlation when the depths of objects in the scene remain similar. By exploiting the properties derived from the theoretical and performance analysis, we propose two techniques to achieve efficient ARF coding scheme: i) view-wise ARF adaptation based on RD-cost prediction, which determines whether ARF is beneficial for a given view, and ii) filter updating based on depth-composition change, in which the same set of filters will be used (i.e., no new filters will be designed) until there is significant change in the depth-composition within the scene. Simulation results show that significant complexity savings are possible (e.g., the complete ARF encoding process needs to be applied, to only 20% similar to 35% of the frames) with negligible quality degradation (e.g., around 0.05 dB loss).

The inter-view prediction is used as well as the temporal prediction in order to exploit both the temporal and inter-view redundancies in multiview video coding. Accordingly, the multiview video coding has two types of motion vectors that are the temporal motion vector and the disparity vector, respectively. The disparity vector is generally uncorrelated with the temporal motion vector. However, they are used together to predict the motion vector regardless of their types, therefore an efficiency of the conventional predictive coding of multiview video coding is decreased. In order to increase the accuracy of the predicted motion vector, a new motion vector prediction method including virtual temporal motion vector and virtual disparity vector is proposed for both the multiview video and multiview video plus depth formats. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the coding bitrates by 6.5% in average and 14.6% at maximum in terms of Bjontegaard metric compared to the conventional method.

In this paper, an improved algorithm to generate a smooth and accurate depth map for view synthesis and multiview video coding is developed. For each block in the target view, the algorithm first uses epipolar geometry to find its matched block in the reference view, from which an initial depth is obtained using the triangulation method and depth projection. 3D warping is then applied to refine the depth. In addition, a structural similarity and maximum likelihood-based approach is developed to fuse the depth estimations from multiple references. Finally, the depth map is smoothed via segmentation and plane fitting. Compared to existing 3D warping-based depth estimation, the proposed algorithm can achieve up to 4 dB improvement in view synthesis, while requires much fewer bits to encode the depth map. Experimental results in multiview video coding show that the proposed method can outperform the H. 264 JMVC software by more than 1 dB.

In this paper, we present a modified inter-view prediction scheme for the multiview video coding (MVC). With more interview prediction, the number of reference frames required to decode a single view increase. Consequently, the data size of decoding a single view increases, thus impacting the decoder performance. In this paper, we propose an MVC scheme that requires less inter-view prediction than that of the MVC standard scheme. The proposed scheme is implemented and tested on real multiview video sequences. Improvements are shown using the proposed scheme in terms of average data size required either to decode a single view, or to access any frame (i.e., random access), with comparable rate-distortion. It is compared to the MVC standard scheme and another improved techniques from the literature.

Since early 2006, Joint video Team has been devoting on the development of multiview video coding (MVC) standard as an extension of H.264/AVC. This MVC standard has been finalized in 2008. During the standardization of MVC, there was also a project namely Joint multiview video Model (JMVM), which focused on the advanced coding tools that are potentially useful. Those coding tools adopted into JMVM, including illumination compensation and motion skip, have not been added into MVC specification. In this paper, coding techniques in MVC as well as the tools in JMVM are described and discussed, focusing on the coding efficiency.

View synthesis prediction has been studied to achieve efficient inter-view prediction. Existing view synthesis prediction methods synthesize predicted pictures by using decoded pictures from the other views and geometric information of the scene. However, these conventional methods have no ability to compensate the inter-view difference in image signals caused by individual camera characteristics and the non-Lambert reflection of objects. This paper proposes adaptive appearance compensated view synthesis prediction;it uses adaptive filters to compensate not only the differences in color and brightness but also the differences in the spatial frequency of images. The object-dependent local differences are also compensated efficiently by estimating the optimal compensation parameters block by block at the decoder. Experiments show that the proposed method reduces the bitrate by up to 40% relative to H.264/AVC multiview video coding, and 26% relative to the conventional view synthesis prediction.
