A cost model for n-version programming with imperfect debugging

One of the challenging problems for software companies is to find the optimal time of release of the software so as to minimize the total cost expended on testing and potential penalty cost due to unresolved faults. If the software is for a safety critical system, then the software release time becomes more important. The criticality of a failure caused by a fault also becomes an important issue for safety critical software. In this paper we develop a total cost model based on criticality of the fault and cost of its occurrence during different phases of development for n-version programming scheme, a popular fault-tolerant architecture. The mathematical model is developed using the reliability growth model based on the non-homogeneous Poisson process. The models for optimal release time under different constraints are developed under the assumption that the debugging is imperfect and there is a penalty for late release of the software. The concept of Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis is used for measuring criticality. Journal of the Operational Research Society (2006) 57, 986-994.

IMPROVInG THE n-version programming PROCESS THROUGH THE EVOLUTIOn OF A DESIGn PARADIGM

To encourage a practical application of the n-version programming (nVP) technique, a design paradigm was proposed and applied in a Six-language Project. The design paradigm improved the development effort of the n-version Software (nVS);however, there were some deficiencies of the design paradigm which led to the leak of a pair of coincident faults. This paper reports on a similar project that used a revised nVP design paradigm. This project reused the revised specification of a real, automatic airplane-landing problem, and involved 40 students at the University of Iowa and the Rockwell International. Guided by the refined nVS development paradigm, the students formed 15 independent programming teams to design, program, test, and evaluate the application. The paper identifies & presents: the impact of the paradigm on the software development process;the improvement of the resulting nVS product;the insight, experience, and learning in conducting this project;various testing procedures applied to the program versions;several quantitative measures of the resulting nVS product;and some comparisons with previous projects. The effectiveness of our revised nVP design paradigm in improving software reliability by the provision of fault tolerance is demonstrated. We found that no single software engineering experiment or product can make revolutionary changes to software development practices overnight. Instead, modern software engineering techniques evolve through the refinement of software development processes. This is true for fault-tolerant software techniques. Without a paradigm to guide the development and evaluation of nVS, software projects by nature can get out of control easily. The n-version programming design paradigm offers a documented process model which is subject to readjustment, tailoring, refinement, and improvement. Attempts have been made to propose a software reliability growth model (SRGM) based on non-homogeneous Poisson process for nVP system. The proposed model concerns the combined effect of increasing fault detection rate and fault removal efficiency under imperfect debugging. Moreover, a cost model has been developed. Also, an optimal release policy based on the proposed cost model and the number of remaining faults has been discussed. The performance of the proposed model has been compared with existing SRGMs for nVP system. Toward the end, the proposed model has been validated using some real data.

Reliability versus Vulnerability of n-version programming Cloud Service Component With Dynamic Decision Time Under Co-Resident Attacks

The virtual machine (VM) co-resident architecture of cloud computing enables simultaneous provision of multiple services to different users, but also makes these services vulnerable to co-resident attacks. For example, by establishing side channels, a malicious attacker can access and even corrupt services performed by other VMs co-residing on the same server as the attacker's VM (AVM). We model a threshold-voting-based n-version programming service component with multiple independent versions simultaneously performing the same requested service to enhance the service reliability. However, the reliability enhancement can be greatly hindered by the co-resident attack, which may corrupt an adequate number of versions leading to a wrong output. We formulate and solve constrained optimization problems that determine the number of service component versions and the voting threshold to balance two conflicting service performance metrics: reliability (service component success probability) and vulnerability (service corruption attack success probability). Two cases respectively having certain and uncertain knowledge about the attacker's power in terms of the number of AVMs are considered. We also investigate impacts of different model parameters on the service performance as well as on solutions to the considered optimization problems through examples.

In fault-tolerant software, to enhance the reliability, one of the major approaches is n-version programming. The modeling studies provided in literature help us to understand under which conditions these approaches increase the software reliability. In this paper, the models given in literature for n-version programming are reviewed. We discuss the deficiency in one of these models trying to improve it to agree with another independent reliability model. Furthermore, we examine how we can combine the dependency concept with the independent reliability model and the subject of how we can extend it for n value. By taking into consideration the dependent failure behavior, a "dependent failure" parameter is introduced to the reliability model in case the events are alpha -dependent. Here, a measures the similarity percentage of the input sets on which each pair of versions fail.

Complex systems-of-systems (SoS) requiring fault-tolerance and high reliability often require redundant systems. The concept of redundancy that includes components with differing failure modes is well understood in the realm of hardware design. n-version programming, although shown to produce significant gains in software reliability over single-version fault tolerant techniques, is not widely accepted or applied. This is due, in part, to n-version programming's lengthy development time and its inherent problems with version independence. Model Driven Software Development (MDSD) is a process that promises gains in software productivity and quality. While progress in MDSD has witnessed the expansion of the supporting Unified Modeling Language profile for modeling fault tolerant characteristics, and the development of specific design patterns for the production of fault tolerant software, MDSD's support in the generation and testing of fault tolerant applications is not evident or explicitly defined. This paper discusses the development of a fault tolerant MDSD framework, which enables users to design, implement and test fault tolerant applications using the n-version modeling technique. The framework closes the gap between existing modeling patterns and the practical application of fault tolerant MDSD, and supports follow-on research to address specific questions relating to the benefits of MDSD within the fault tolerance software domain.

A new method of controlling trains based on constant communications with each train is known as Communications Based Train Control (CBTC). This method allows more traffic and trains closer together at the same time improving safety. This paper looks at an open on-board CBTC controller for subway cars using a modified model of n-version programming, to create a system that guarantees the highest level of safety, at the same time performing the on-board functions required by CBTC.

Although n-version programming has been employed in some mission-critical applications, the reliability and fault correlation issues remain a debatable topic in the research community. In this paper we perform a comprehensive evaluation on our recent, project data on n-version programming and present statistical investigations on coincident failures and correlated faults. Furthermore, we compare our project with nASA 4-University project to identify the "variants" and "invariants" with respect to failure rate, fault density, coincident failures, related faults, and reliability improvement for n-version programming. Our experimental results support fault tolerance as an effective software reliability engineering technique.

We present the preliminary results on developing a weighted n-version programming (nVP) scheme for ensuring resilience of machine learning based steering control algorithms. The proposed scheme is designed based on the fusion of outputs from three redundant Deep neural network (Dnn) models, independently designed using Udacity's self driving car challenge data. The improvement in reliability compared to single Dnn models is evaluated by measuring the steering angle prediction accuracy in the presence of simulated perturbations on input image data caused by various environmental conditions.

The main issue in controlling safety-critical systems such as nuclear power reactors or railway signalization systems where risk ratio is at the highest level because small errors might result in hazardous accidents (e.g. death or injury of several people) is to satisfy safety-related standards and provide high-safety with high-reliability. In order to improve reliability and safety of such systems to the required level by decreasing common-cause failures at the same time, diverse programming (or n-version programming) technique where n-different independently designed modules run in parallel on the same input output specifications can be used. In this study, a new bitwise voting strategy based on safe-states of variables is proposed and possible critical races between modules those run in a parallel manner are determined. Solutions for critical races are also explained.
