Nowadays, significant deficiencies exist in the information flow and access along the nc (Numerical Control) process chain. These deficiencies are solved insufficiently by introducing CAD/CAM systems and feature-oriented specification languages. In contrast the application of new production and new machining systems requires an intensive information exchange. The introduced approach enables the preparation for feature-based work plans with methods known from the graph theory as a knowledge-based ncprogramming system. Therefore the work plan will be mapped into a directed graph in a mathematically defined way. Based on that, it is possible to use algorithms to find the shortest path and a Hamiltonian path inside this directed graph under given requirements. Thus, the work plan will be structured and re-ordered. Finally the corresponding nc paths will be generated and distributed to the machinery. Thence in this in-process paper the requirements, the investigation and the selection of suitable knowledge structuring concepts, mathematically basics and the work flow in such a system will be pointed out. Finally a preliminary prototype will be introduced.

We introduce three algorithms for optimization of a tool path of a numerically controlled five-axis milling machine. The unifying idea is a flexible geometric structure which adapts itself to a certain cost function defined on the required part surface. Algorithm I is based on the variational grid generation, Algorithm 2 is based on a new modification of the space filling curves techniques. Algorithm 3 is based on construction of vector fields composed of optimal cutting directions. The algorithms verified by numerical experiments as well as by practical machining display a priority with the reference to the standard methods. (c) 2006 IMACS. Published by Elsevier B.V. Knowledge bases for real-world domains such as mechanical engineering require expressive and efficient representation and processing tools. We pursue a declarative-compilative approach to knowledge engineering. While Horn logic (as implemented in PROLOG) is well-suited for representing relational clauses, other kinds of declarative knowledge call for hybrid extensions: functional dependencies and higher-order knowledge should be modeled directly. Forward (bottom-up) reasoning should be integrated with backward (top-down) reasoning. Constraint propagation should be used wherever possible instead of search-intensive resolution. Taxonomic knowledge should be classified into an intuitive subsumption hierarchy. Our LISP-based tools provide direct translators of these declarative representations into abstract machines such as an extended Warren Abstract Machine (WAM) and specialized inference engines that are interfaced to each other. More importantly, we provide source-to-source transformers between various knowledge types, both for user convenience and machine efficiency. These formalisms with their translators and transformers have been developed as part of COLAB, a compilation laboratory for studying what we call, respectively, 'vertical' and 'horizontal' compilation of knowledge, as well as for exploring the synergetic collaboration of the knowledge representation formalisms. A case study in the realm of mechanical engineering has been an important driving force behind the development of COLAB. It Will be used as the source of examples throughout the paper when discussing the enhanced formalisms, the hybrid representation architecture, and the compilers.
