This paper proposes the use of voice commands expressed in natural language for part program generation for pulsed fiber laser micromachining. Traditionally, according to ISO G-code, a part program is an ordered list of program blocks in an ASCII formatted computer file. Each block identifies a machine operation and defines its parameters, following a predefined syntax. Under the proposed approach, such a file is replaced by natural language voice commands without any particular syntax constraints. Such an approach has the potential to facilitate the generation of part programs in domains (laser micromanufacturing, rapid prototyping, desktop computer numerical control) where traditional ISO G-code programming seems inappropriate, and the adoption and implementation of complex solutions such as STEP-NC or CAD/CAM systems could be unjustified. The input system is responsible for the recognition and interpretation of voice commands according to a statistical knowledge base learnt from examples. The proposed approach has been implemented in a prototype computer system, named smart programming system that has been validated by an application to the programming of pulsed fiber laser micromachining.

The complexity and importance of learning programming fundamentals (i.e., sequences of sentences that express actions, conditions, and repetitions in computing) for undergraduate students has motivated the development of an intense educational research area. One frequently studied problem is the difficulty in the learning of traditional context-free grammars which are present, for example, in programming languages such as Pascal and C. This study experimentally investigates the use of natural language in the learning of programming fundamentals by two groups of undergraduate students without prior knowledge of programming and compares its use with that of a traditional grammar language. Results suggest that the use of natural language is a good alternative, despite the small differences, to the use of traditional programming languages defined by context-free grammars. This alternative is attractive and promising because the student does not need to learn a formal grammar to learn the fundamentals of programming.

The ability to automatically interpret natural language commands and actions has the potential of freeing up end-users to interact with software artefacts without the syntactic, vocabulary and formal constraints of a programming language. As most semantic parsers for end-user programming have been operating under a restricted vocabulary setting, it is unclear how these approaches perform over conditions of high semantic heterogeneity (e.g. in an open vocabulary). As the generation of annotated data is costly and time-consuming, models that effectively address complex learning problems constrained under the assumption of small annotated data sets are highly relevant. In this paper, we propose a semantic parsing approach to map natural language commands to actions from a large and heterogeneous frame set trained under a small set of annotated data. The semantic parsing approach uses the combination of semantic role labelling, distributional semantics geometric features and semantic pivoting in order to address the semantic matching problem in an open vocabulary setting.

A key challenge for generalizing programming-by-demonstration (PBD) scripts is the data description problem - when a user demonstrates performing an action, the system needs to determine features for describing this action and the target object in a way that can reflect the user's intention for the action. However, prior approaches for creating data descriptions in PBD systems have problems with usability, applicability, feasibility, transparency and/or user control. Our APPINITE system introduces a multi-modal interface with which users can specify data descriptions verbally using natural language instructions. APPINITE guides users to describe their intentions for the demonstrated actions through mixed-initiative conversations. APPINITE constructs data descriptions for these actions from the natural language instructions. Our evaluation showed that APPINITE is easy-to-use and effective in creating scripts for tasks that would otherwise be difficult to create with prior PBD systems, due to ambiguous data descriptions in demonstrations on GUIs.

The proliferation of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) devices and services and their integration in smart environments creates the need for a simple yet effective way of controlling and communicating with them. Towards that direction, the application of the Trigger - Action model has attracted a lot of research with many systems and applications having been developed following that approach. This work introduces ParlAmI, a multimodal conversational interface aiming to give its users the ability to determine the behavior of AmI environments, by creating rules using natural language as well as a GUI. The paper describes ParlAmI, its requirements and functionality, and presents the findings of a user-based evaluation which was conducted.

Exploring Diverse Conventional and Deep Linguistic Features for Sentiment Analysis of Online Content

Social media has changed the world by providing the facility to common person to share their views and generate their own content, known as Users Generated Content (UGC). Due to huge volume of UGC data being created at great velocity, so to analysis this big data, latest AI (Artificial Intelligence) and its sub-domain NLP (natural language Processing) are being used. Sentiment analysis of online content is an active research area due to its vast applications in business for review analysis, social and political issues. In this research study, we aim to carry out sentiment analysis of online content by exploring conventional features like Term Frequency - Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), Count-Vectorization, and state of the art word embeddings based word2vec. Extensive exploratory data analysis has been carried out using the latest data visualization approaches. The main novelty lies in the application of unique and diverse machine learning algorithms on social media datasets and the results evaluation using standard performance evaluation measures reveal that the word2vec using Quadratic Discriminant analysis-based classifier show optimal results.

From programming to Prompting: Developing Computational Thinking through Large language Model-Based Generative Artificial Intelligence

The advancement of large language model-based generative artificial intelligence (LLM-based GenAI) has sparked significant interest in its potential to address challenges in computational thinking (CT) education. CT, a critical problem-solving approach in the digital age, encompasses elements such as abstraction, iteration, and generalisation. However, its abstract nature often poses barriers to meaningful teaching and learning. This paper proposes a constructionist prompting framework that leverages LLM-based GenAI to foster CT development through natural language programming and prompt engineering. By engaging learners in crafting and refining prompts, the framework aligns CT elements with five prompting principles, enabling learners to apply and develop CT in contextual and organic ways. A three-phase workshop is proposed to integrate the framework into teacher education, equipping future teachers to support learners in developing CT through interactions with LLM-based GenAI. The paper concludes by exploring the framework's theoretical, practical, and social implications, advocating for its implementation and validation.

The Design, Education and Evolution of a Robotic Baby

Inspired by Alan Turing's idea of a child machine, in this article, we introduce the formal definition of a robotic baby, an integrated system with minimal world knowledge at birth, capable of learning incrementally and interactively, and adapting to the world. Within the definition, fundamental capabilities and system characteristics of the robotic baby are identified and presented as the system-level requirements. As a minimal viable prototype, the Baby architecture is proposed with a systems engineering design approach to satisfy the system-level requirements, which has been verified and validated with simulations and experiments on a robotic system. We demonstrate the capabilities of the robotic baby in natural language acquisition and semantic parsing in English and Chinese, as well as in natural language grounding, natural language reinforcement learning, natural language programming, and system introspection for explainability. The education and evolution of the robotic baby are illustrated with real-world robotic demonstrations. Inspired by the genetic inheritance in human beings, knowledge inheritance in robotic babies and its benefits regarding evolution are discussed.

End-User Development of Mashups with naturalMash

Context: The emergence of the long-tail in the market of software applications is shifting the role of end-users from mere consumers to becoming developers of applications addressing their unique, personal, and transient needs. On the Web, a popular form of such applications is called mashup, built out of the lightweight composition of Web APIs (reusable software components delivered as a service through the Web). To enable end-users to build mashups, there is a key problem that must be overcome: End-users lack programming knowledge as well as the interest to learn how to master the complex set of Web technologies required to develop mashups. End-User Development (EUD) is an emerging research field dealing with this type of problems. Its main goal is to design tools and techniques facilitating the development of software applications by non-programmers. Objective: The paper describes the design and evaluation of naturalMash, an innovative EUD tool for mashups (a mashup tool). naturalMash aims at enabling non-professional users without any knowledge of programming languages and skills to create feature-rich, interactive, and useful mashups. Methods: The design of naturalMash adopts a formative evaluation approach, and has completed three design and evaluation iterations. The formative evaluations utilize usability testing, think aloud protocol, questionnaires, observation, and unstructured interviews. Additionally, we compare the expressive power of naturalmash with the state-of-the-art mashup tools. Results: The results from the formative evaluations helped us identify important usability problems. From an assessment point of view, the results were promising and sggested that the proposed tool has a short and gentle learning curve in a way that even non-programmers are able to rapidly build useful mashups. Also, the comparative evaluation results showed that naturalMash offers a competitive level of expressive power compared with existing mashup tools targeting non-
