This research investigates the combination of natural language visualization and Conversational Technology to support children enhancing linguistic and communication abilities. In particular, I refer to those skills related to self-description that are fundamental in the process of self-knowledge, self-awareness, and self-acceptance. The challenge of this project is to design, develop, and evaluate a dialogue system able to stimulate children to describe themselves with questions and hints;besides, it must be capable of drawing their avatar consistently with what they say and with how they look like.

The main objective of this research is to give a cognitive support to a person for understanding Hindi language text using automatic text visualization (ATV). ATV is especially useful for the persons with learning disabilities (LD). This paper focuses on the background and complexity of the problem. The impact on comprehension through visualized text over reading the text is discussed. The architecture of Preksha - a Hindi text visulizer - is given and several illustrative examples of scenes generated using it are given.

Recent improvements in natural language processing pushed the development of a wide range of products and applications that allow natural spoken interaction for children. Previous studies explored conversational agents for children and found out that they are valuable both for playing and learning. In addition, recent researches highlighted that, when we want to develop a conversational tool for children, we must consider that they have different modes from adults and they approach conversational technologies in a different way because of their linguistic skills, their way of conducting dialogues and, more generally, their interaction attitude. In this paper, we describe Smemo, a multi-modal interface for children aged 6 to 9 years old. This tool permits to approach conversational technologies in an original and multi-modal way giving the user the possibility to customize and personalize the agent. The main goal of Smemo is to promote an innovative learning method by putting children at the center of the process.

We outline the design of a visualizer, named Vishit, for texts in the Hindi language. The Hindi language is lingua franca in many states of India where people speak different languages. The visualized text serves as a universal language where seamless communication is needed by many people who speak different languages and have different cultures. Vishit consists of the following three major processing steps: language processing, knowledge base creation and scene generation. Initial results from the Vishit prototype are encouraging.

Earlier we have presented an outline of the architecture of Preksha - a Hindi text visualizer - system for visualizing Hindi text. Preksha is an automatic text visulizer (ATV) for free-word order Hindi language. It consists of a computational process of understanding natural language, and scene generation by appropriate placement of objects in visual output using spatial relations. This paper discusses the importance and complexity of spatial relations as well as prepositions in the automatic scene generation. We discuss on semantic and syntactic relations of prepositions with the support of Karaka theory. Hindi postpositions are explored with illustrative examples. The natural language processing (NLP) engine of Preksha is structured with a syntactic notation to support in ATV. Knowledge representation (KR) uses Object Attribute Relation (OAR) Model.

The fundamentals of verbal communication skills are developed during childhood, and existing studies pinpoint the benefits of stimulating language and expression skills from an early age. Our research is a preliminary evaluation of conversational technology to support this process. In this paper, we describe the design process of a speech-based conversational agent for children, which involved a Wizard-of-Oz empirical study with 20 primary school children aged 9–10 y.o. in order to identify the design guidelines for the automated version of the system. Our agent is called ISI, is integrated into a web application and exploits oral and visual interaction modes. ISI enables children to practice verbal skills related to the description of a person’s physical characteristics. It provides opportunities for them to learn and use words and linguistic constructs. Also, ISI permits to develop their body awareness and self-expression (when describing their self) or the attention to "the other" (when describing someone else). ISI engages users in a speech-based conversational flow composed of two main repeated steps. It talks to the children and stimulates them with questions about a specific part of their body (e.g., "What color is your hair?"). When the users describe the required feature adequately, ISI provides a cheerful real-time visual representation of the answer;otherwise, it provides hints. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
