Context-Based network Estimation for Energy-Efficient Ubiquitous Wireless Connectivity

Context information brings new opportunities for efficient and effective system resource management of mobile devices. In this work, we focus on the use of context information to achieve energy-efficient, ubiquitous wireless connectivity. Our field-collected data show that the energy cost of network interfaces poses a great challenge to ubiquitous connectivity, despite decent availability of cellular networks. We propose to leverage the complementary strengths of Wi-Fi and cellular interfaces by automatically selecting the most efficient one based on context information. We formulate the selection of wireless interfaces as a statistical decision problem. The challenge is to accurately estimate Wi-Fi network conditions without powering up the network interface. We explore the use of different context information, including time, history, cellular network conditions, and device motion, to statistically estimate Wi-Fi network conditions with negligible overhead. We evaluate several context-based algorithms for the estimation and prediction of current and future network conditions. Simulations using field-collected traces show that our network estimation algorithms can improve the average battery lifetime of a commercial mobile phone for an ECG reporting application by 40 percent, very close to the estimated theoretical upper bound of 42 percent. Furthermore, our most effective algorithm can predict Wi-Fi availability for one and ten hours into the future with 95 and 90 percent accuracy, respectively.

Buffer Management Strategies to Reduce HoL Blocking

Congestion management is likely to become a critical issue in interconnection networks, as increasing power consumption and cost concerns lead to improvements in the efficiency of network resources. In previous configurations, networks were usually oversized and underutilized. In a smaller network, however, contention is more likely to occur and blocked packets cause head-of-line (HoL) blocking among the rest of the packets, spreading congestion quickly. The best-known solution to HoL blocking is Virtual Output Queues (VOQs). However, the cost of implementing VOQs increases quadratically with the number of output ports in the network, making it unpractical. The situation is aggravated when several priorities and/or Quality of Service (QoS) levels must be supported. Therefore, a more scalable and cost-effective solution is required to reduce or eliminate HoL blocking. In this paper, we present a family of methodologies, referred to as Destination-Based Buffer Management (DBBM), to reduce/eliminate the HoL blocking effect on interconnection networks. DBBM efficiently uses the resources (mainly memory queues) of the network. These methodologies are comprehensively evaluated in terms of throughput, scalability, and fairness. Results show that using the DBBM strategy, with a reduced number of queues at each switch, it is possible to achieve roughly the same throughput as the VOQ mechanism. Moreover, all of the proposed strategies are designed in such a way that they can be used in any switch architecture. We compare DBBM with RECN, a sophisticated mechanism that eliminates HoL blocking in congestion situations. Our mechanism is able to achieve almost the same performance with very low logic requirements (in contrast with RECN).

PReSENt: A Collaboration Framework for Resource Sharing in Wireless Mesh networks

Many protocol particulars developed for the wireless mesh networks such as multipath routing, channel assignment, topology control, assume that a network-wide collaboration is available to establish connections to the network outside. However, the collaboration can be easily discouraged in the presence of selfish behaviors, referred to as free riding. In this paper, we propose a framework, PReSENt, to promote and make more secure the practices of collaboration among nodes by securing a compensation to the collaboration. When the PReSENt is enabled in wireless mesh networks, a node accumulates credits, an amount quantifying its resource provision when it provides its resource for other nodes. The nodes consuming the resource publish rewards, an amount quantifying their resource usage. The credits are used to guarantee the resource sharing for the provider from the customers in the future, whose amount is proportional to its relative contribution to the network-wide collaboration. The rewards are used to validate their corresponding credits in order to prevent false accumulations of the credits in selfish nodes. We formally define the underlying security model of the PReSENt and prove that the PReSENt is secure in the random oracle model. We then implement the PReSENt in J-Sim to illustrate its operational behaviors with respect to correct and secure resource sharing. The simulation results indicate that the PReSENt correctly encourages and controls the collaboration on resource sharing in wireless mesh networks.

A joint-ONU interval-based dynamic scheduling algorithm for ethernet passive optical networks

This paper proposes a new dynamic bandwidth allocation system for Ethernet Passive Optical networks (EPONs), subject to requirements of fairness, efficiency, and cost. An Optical Line Terminal (OLT)-centric bandwidth allocation model is proposed which employs a credit pooling,technique combined with a weighted-share policy to partition the upstream bandwidth among different classes of service, and to prevent Optical network Units (ONUs) from monopolizing the bandwidth. The OLT-centric model allows global optimization of network resources, a characteristic which is not found in many earlier proposals. Supported by the new bandwidth allocation, the paper proposes a joint-ONU interval-based packet scheduling algorithm, referred to herein as COPS (Class -of-service Oriented Packet Scheduling), that meets the requirements set out above. We compare COPS with another well-known scheduling algorithm which employed a standard priority-based bandwidth sharing. We show that COPS is superior in terms of network utilization and maximum packet delay, with the consequence of an increase in average packet delay for the premium traffic. This drawback is overcome by combining COPS with a rate-based optimization scheme.

Seamless TCP Migration on Smartphones without network Support

Is it possible to migrate TCP/IP flows between different networks on modern mobile devices without infrastructure support or protocol changes? To answer this question, we make three research contributions: 1) We report a comprehensive characterization of IP traffic on 27 iPhone 3GS users for three months. 2) Driven by these findings, we devise two simple, effective, and easily deployable system mechanisms to support seamless flow migration without network support, and extensively evaluate their effectiveness using our field collected traces of real-life usage. Wait-n-Migrate leverages the fact that most flows are short lived. It establishes new flows on newly available networks but allows preexisting flows on the old network to terminate naturally. Resumption Agent takes advantage of the resumption functionality of modern protocols to securely resume flows without application intervention. Combined, they provide an unprecedented opportunity to immediately deploy policies that leverage multiple networks to improve the performance, efficiency, and connectivity of mobile devices. 3) We report an iPhone-based implementation of these system mechanisms and demonstrate their overhead to be negligible. Furthermore, we employ a sample switching policy, AutoSwitch, to demonstrate their performance. Through traces and field measurements, we show that AutoSwitch reduces user disruptions by an order of magnitude.

Towards an FPGA-Accelerated programmable data path for edge-to-core communications in 5G networks

The Fifth-Generation (5G) networks, as the emerging next generation mobile networks, are adopting softwarization and virtualization technologies as the cornerstones for the network operators to gain significant competitive advantages by reducing both capital and operational expenditure, enabling agile and flexible service creation and deployment, among others. Meanwhile, a virtualized and softwarized 5G network would suffer from downgraded system performance due to this unprecedented paradigm shift towards software-based networking. Addressing one of the top challenges in this context, this paper focuses on improving the performance of the data plane from the edge to the core network segment (backhaul) in a 5G multi-tenant network by leveraging and exploring the programmability introduced by software-based networking. A fully functional prototype has been designed and implemented utilizing a Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA5) acceleration-based platform, and the proto-typed system has been empirically tested and evaluated to demonstrate the superior performance enhancements. The proposed solution can effectively support 5G networks in delivering mission-critical or time-sensitive applications such as ultra-high definition video use cases as experimentally validated and shown in this paper, by fulfilling the strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirements imposed to the data plane.

Providing Guaranteed Protection in Multi-Hop Wireless networks with Interference Constraints

We consider the problem of providing protection against failures in wireless networks subject to interference constraints. Typically, protection in wired networks is provided through the provisioning of dedicated backup paths. This approach has not been previously considered in the wireless setting due to the prohibitive cost of backup capacity. Assigning capacity for dedicated backup paths in a wireless setting can more than double the total resources required from what was needed without protection, which can make protection infeasible. However, we show that in the presence of interference, guaranteed protection can be provided for all demands with little, and oftentimes no, additional resources beyond what was required without any protection. This is due to the fact that after a failure, links that previously interfered with the failed link can be activated, thus leading to a "recapturing" of lost capacity. We provide an ILP formulation to find an optimal solution for both binary and SINR interference constraints, and develop corresponding time-efficient algorithms. Our approach utilizes up to 87 percent less protection resources than traditional disjoint path routing to provide guaranteed protection. For the case of 2-hop interference, our protection scheme requires only 8 percent more resources on average than providing no protection whatsoever.

Implementation and Integration of Regional Health Care Data networks in the Hellenic National Health Service

Background: Modern health care is provided with close cooperation among many different institutions and professionals, using their specialized expertise in a common effort to deliver best-quality and, at the same time, cost-effective services. Within this context of the growing need for information exchange, the demand for realization of data networks interconnecting various health care institutions at a regional level, as well as a national level, has become a practical necessity. Objectives: To present the technical solution that is under consideration for implementing and interconnecting regional health care data networks in the Hellenic National Health System. Methods: The most critical requirements for deploying such a regional health care data network were identified as: fast implementation, security, quality of service, availability, performance, and technical support. Results: The solution proposed is the use of proper virtual private network technologies for implementing functionally-interconnected regional health care data networks. Conclusions: The regional health care data network is considered to be a critical infrastructure for further development and penetration of information and communication technologies in the Hellenic National Health System. Therefore, a technical approach was planned, in order to have a fast cost-effective implementation, conforming to certain specifications.

Traffic-Aware Resource Allocation for Multi-User Beamforming

5G New Radio (NR), a new radio access technology, has been proposed to enhance the flexibility, scalability, and efficiency of 5G networks. By leveraging phased-array antennas, a base station (BS) can adaptively form multiple directional beams to serve geo-distributed user equipments (UEs) concurrently. However, the imperfect beam pattern of a phased-array antenna may create side lobes, leading to inter-beam interference. While recent efforts have focused on beam selection that mitigates inter-beam interference and maximizes the sum-rate, we notice that the selected beams may not be fully utilized in an OFDMA-based system. The root cause is that only a fixed set of beams can be configured at a time to serve a wide frequency band but some resource blocks (i.e., subcarriers) may not be able to be allocated to any UEs due to limited traffic demands. To address the above resource underutilization problem, this paper presents traffic-aware joint beam configuration and resource allocation, which explicitly considers user traffic demands and configures beams that can optimally utilize the spectrum resources. We derive an approximation model that produces a suboptimal solution solvable by open-source solvers and further develop a low-complexity greedy algorithm for large-scale networks. Our simulation results show that the proposed traffic-aware allocation and beam configuration scheme achieves better utilization, especially when users have heterogeneous traffic demands. The overall effective throughput can be significantly enhanced as compared to conventional sum-rate maximization allocation.
