Base platforms for many data-intensive applications start to move onto cloud computing services. These applications inherently requires very large storage space, and append-only distributed file systems have been developed for this purpose. These distributed file systems are capable of running on commodity hardware and highly scalable. Cloud computing service providers only try to reduce management costs, but not concerning about significant up-front investment costs. Additionally, virtual machine technologies, especially Xen that most of cloud computing services use, have low I/O performance. In this paper, we present a cost-effective cloud storage service model, which are built with old PCs but shows good performance. Our experimental evaluation shows 46% better performance in Postmark benchmark.

Virtually all published models of NF utilize today fairly complex relations for calculating ion partitioning, which usually assume three ion exclusion mechanisms, steric, dielectric and Donnan (electric) (SDE). These models require a large number of parameters and often show large discrepancies when fitted to experiments with different salts. It is even harder to verify whether it is the whole assumed mechanism or just certain parameters that leads to failure. The problem is exacerbated by the formidable difficulties to independently determine and verify physical characteristics of thin top layer that is often irregular and non-uniform.

We developed the distributed system called "Distributer" in order to make use of millions of unused CPU cycles inside the LAN. The system is based on server-client architecture and the interaction with the system is implemented via web interface on the server side. Clients connect to server and periodically update their status based on which server distributes and sends jobs and at the end collects results. Our system is easy-to-use and easy-to-install and has the simple centralized management of applications needed on client side for jobs execution. We keep all applications on one central repository that is shared to all clients inside LAN with the help of network file system protocol (NFS).

Securing access to files is an important and growing concern in corporate environments. Employees are increasingly accessing files from untrusted devices, including personal home computers and mobile devices, such as smart phones, which are not under the control of the corporation, and may be infected with viruses, worms, and other malware. In such cases, it is crucial to protect the confidentiality and integrity of corporate data from malicious accesses. This paper proposes a novel scheme called Working Set-Based Access Control (WSBAC) to restrict network file system accesses from untrusted devices. The key idea is to continuously observe and extract working sets for users when they access files from trusted devices and use the working sets to restrict user file accesses from untrusted devices. This paper reports on the design and implementation of tools to automatically extract working sets, and transparently enforce WSBAC without requiring changes to the file system. Our experiments with realistic network file system traces lead us to conclude that WSBAC offers a flexible yet secure way to restrict access from untrusted devices, and that the runtime overheads of WSBAC enforcement are negligible.

Due to the rapid growth of World Wide Web and the popularization of personal computer, the number of World Wide Web users is increasing in an incredible speed. It makes the need of disk space for a large web service also increases in the same rate. Therefore, it becomes to an important technique to design and implement a powerful network file system for the large web service providers. In this paper we proposed three design issues for the scalable network file system. We use the variable number of objects within a bucket to decrease the internal fragmentation in small files. We also proposed the free space and access load-balancing mechanism to balance the overall loading within the bucket servers. And last we proposed a mechanism for caching data which is frequently accessed to lower the total number of disk I/O. These proposed mechanisms will effectively improve the performance of the scalable network file system for the large web services.

An on-demand file staging system, Catwalk, is proposed. Catwalk is designed so that it can run on any Linux clusters without any special or additional hardware. By having hook functions on the system calls of file operations, a file staging system can be transparent from the view of users, and users can be free from having wrong file staging scripts. In Catwalk, the file copying is done via normal TCP protocol so that Catwalk can run over ordinary, widely-used Ethernet. The stage-in file copy is pipelined to maximize the bandwidth from single file server. The performance of Catwalk is evaluated and compared with NFS using synthetic but realistic workloads. The evaluations show the stage-in performance with the pipeline technique is much better than the performance of NFS. The stage-out performance is comparable with the NFS performance despite the extra copying of files, and the file server is lightly loaded with the Catwalk stageout while NFS entails much heavier server loads. The biggest problems of NFS are its centralized design and lack of scheduling for the parallel workloads. The performance of Catwalk shows that remote file access performance can be improved much better if file accesses are scheduled in a proper way. Thus the proposed file staging system can be a strong complement to NFS, especially for small clusters often having no dedicated parallel file system.

A lot of computer usage involves dealing with files like videos, documents, photos. Unfortunately, for most users sharing (large) files, finding files, synchronizing files between devices and backing up files is far from trivial. To address these issues, we present an alternative for traditional filesystems: CIMPLE. CIMPLE provides a content-centric storage interface with integrated search and sharing capabilities. It also relieves the user of backup and synchronization problems. CIMPLE gives each content item a secure ID and understands content metadata.

Mental images of number lines, Galton's "number forms'' (NF), are a useful way of investigating the relation between number and space. Here we report the first neuroimaging study of number-form synesthesia, investigating 10 synesthetes with NFs going from left to right compared with matched controls. Neuroimaging with functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed no difference in brain activation during a task focused on number magnitude but, in a comparable task on number order, synesthetes showed additional activations in the left and right posterior intraparietal sulci, suggesting that NFs are essentially ordinal in nature. Our results suggest that there are separate but partially overlapping neural circuits for the processing of ordinal and cardinal numbers, irrespective of the presence of an NF, but a core region in the anterior intraparietal sulcus representing (cardinal) number meaning appears to be activated autonomously, irrespective of task. This article provides an important extension beyond previous studies that have focused on word-color or grapheme-color synesthesia.

Notopterygium forbesii Boiss (NF) has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of common cold and rheumatism. However, there has been limited research on the biological properties of NF, and the mechanisms of action remain unknown. Here, we aimed to study the mechanism of NTF-induced heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in human fetal hepatocytes (HFHs) and to identify the constituents responsible. Exposure of HFHs to NF causes oxidative stress with the accumulation of reactive species, which in turn leads to the phosphorylation of p38 MAPK and nuclear accumulation of Nrf2 transcription factor, and eventually increased levels of HO-1 mRNA and protein. The increases in reactive species and HO-1 protein are inhibited by agonists of glucocorticoid receptors (GR), such as RU28362, prednisolone, and dexamethasone, as well as by N-acetyl-L-cysteine and SB203580 (a p38 inhibitor), suggesting a role of GR in NF-induced increases in reactive species and HO-1. Assay-guided fractionation of NF led to three active compounds, phenethyl ferulate, bergaptol, and isoimperatorin, that were found to increase oxidative stress and HO-1 protein levels in HFHs. The induction of HO-1 protein in response to moderate oxidative stress may explain some of the beneficial pharmacological effects of NF.

Grid-Oriented Storage: A single-image, cross-domain, high-bandwidth architecture

This paper describes the Grid-Oriented Storage (GOS) architecture and its implementations. A GOS-specific file system (GOS-FS), the single- purpose intent of a GOS OS, and secure interfaces via Grid Security Infrastructure (GSI) motivate and enable this new architecture. As an FTP server, GOS with a slimmed OS, with a total volume of around 150 MB, outperforms the standard GridFTP by 20-40 percent. As a file server, GOS-FS acts as a network/ grid interface, enabling a user to perform searches and access resources without downloading them locally. In the real-world tests between Cambridge and Beijing, where the transfer distance is 10,000 km, the multistreamed GOS-FS file opening/saving resulted in a remarkable performance increase of about 2-25 times, compared to the single-streamed network file system (NFSv4). GOS is expected to be a variant of or successor to the well-used network-attached storage (NAS) and/or storage area network (SAN) products in the Grid era.
