Virtual environment Secure file system (VSFS) is a software architecture for secure file sharing among applications with different trust levels that consists of a set of interconnected virtual machines (VMs). Application VMs (APP-VMs) run the application processes that transparently access remote shared files hosted by file system VMs (FS-VMs). Each FS-VM implements a Mandatory Access Control (MAC) security policy to control file sharing. To define and enforce this policy, VSFS uses SELinux. Each APP-VM is labeled with a security context paired with the IP address of the VM. FS-VMs use this context to check access rights of the APP-VMs with respect to the requested files and operations. A third set of VMs, the administrative VMs (A-VMs), provides assurance about the integrity of the FS-VMs and implements anti-spoofing techniques to authenticate each file request sent by the APP-VMs. After describing the overall architecture, we discuss the security and performance results of a first prototype. These first results show that the overhead due to mandatory access control is fairly acceptable.

Continuous data protection, which logs every update to a file system, is an enabling technology to protect file systems against malicious attacks and/or user mistakes, because it allows each file update to be undoable. Existing implementations of continuous data protection work either at disk access interface or within the file system. Despite the implementation complexity, their performance overhead is significant when compared with file systems that do not support continuous data protection. Moreover, such kernel-level file update logging implementation is complex and cannot be easily ported to other operating systems. This paper describes the design and implementation of four user-level continuous data protection implementations for NFS servers, all of which work on top of the NFS protocol and thus can be easily ported to any operating systems that support NFS. Measurements obtained from running standard benchmarks and real-world NFS traces on these user-level continuous data protection systems demonstrate a surprising result: Performance of NFS servers protected by pure user-level continuous data protection schemes is comparable to that of unprotected vanilla NFS servers.

Content-aware cooperative caching for cluster-based web servers

Most traditional cooperative caching schemes were developed for network file systems but were not designed for cluster-based web servers with content-based request distribution. Hence, although the schemes are applied to the web servers, their performance is not good due to high disk accesses and large block access latency. This paper proposes and evaluates a new cooperative caching scheme suitable to file systems in web servers. It uses a cache replacement policy, called duplicate first copy replacement, to avoid caching unnecessary data produced during serving requests and to minimize disk accesses. In addition it reduces block access latency required to fetch a file-block in the cooperative cache. A simulation shows that our cooperating caching decreases the disk access ratio by 29%, and reduces block access latency by about 26% when compared to the existing cooperative algorithms. A scalable bandwidth guaranteed distributed continuous media file system using network attached autonomous disks

Repository for continous media data differs from that of the traditional text-based data both in storage space and streaming bandwidth requirements. The file systems used for continuous media streams need to support large volumes and high bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a novel scalable distributed continuous media file system built using autonomous disks. Autonomous disks are attached directly to the network and are able to perform lightweight processing. We discuss different ways to realize the autonomous disk, and describe a prototype implementation on Linux platform using PC-based hardware. We present the basic requirements of the continuous media file system and present the design methodology and a prototype Linux-based implementation of the distributed file system that supports the requirements. We present experimental results on the performance of the proposed file system prototyped using autonomous disks. We show that the performance of the file system scales linearly with the number of disks and the number of clients. The file system performs much superior to NFS running on the same hardware platform and can deliver higher raw disk bandwidth to the applications. We also present bandwidth and time sensitive read/write procedures for the file system and show that the file system can provide strict bandwidth guarantees for continuous media streams.

Interposed request routing for scalable network storage

This paper explores interposed request routing in Slice, a new storage system architecture for highspeed networks incorporating network-attached block storage. Slice interposes a request switching filter-called a muproxy-along each client's network path to the storage service (e. g., in a network adapter or switch). The muproxy intercepts request traffic and distributes it across a server ensemble. We propose request routing schemes for I/O and file service traffic, and explore their effect on service structure. The Slice prototype uses a packet filter muproxy to virtualize the standard network file system (NFS) protocol, presenting to NFS clients a unified shared file volume with scalable bandwidth and capacity. Experimental results from the industry-standard SPECsfs97 workload demonstrate that the architecture enables construction of powerful network-attached storage services by aggregating cost-effective components on a switched Gigabit Ethernet LAN.

A Nowcast/Forecast system for Coastal Ocean Circulation using simple nudging data assimilation

This study describes the establishment of a Nowcast/Forecast system for Coastal Ocean Circulation (NFS-COC), which was run operationally on a daily basis to provide users ocean surface currents and sea levels that vary with synoptic winds, and seasonal and mesoscale variability intrinsic to the Florida Current. Based on the requirements of users, information about possible oil spills, trajectories, etc., is also provided by NFS-COC. NFS-COC consists of two parts: a 3D ocean nowcast/forecast circulation model, Princeton Ocean Model (POM), and a 2D trajectory model. POM is automatically run to forecast ocean variables for up to 2 days under forcing of the Florida Current inflow/outflow and the predicted surface winds, which are automatically transferred (by ftp) from a file server at the National Meteorological Center (now known as the National Centers for Environmental Prediction). The winds from the mesoscale Eta Model are called Eta winds. Then the trajectory model is run to predict the path due to 1) the POM-predicted ocean surface currents, 2) wind drift due to the predicted Eta winds, and 3) turbulent dispersion based on a random flight (Markov process) model. The predicted surface trajectories can be used to estimate the physical transport of oil spills (and other drifting or floating objects) in the Straits of Florida and many other coastal seas. A simple data assimilation scheme (nudging to the volume transport) is designed into the NFS-COC, although some powerful data assimilation methods exist for assimilating other physical variables.

A program package BEAN (BENSC Analysis Program) has been developed to provide a standard for the analysis of one-dimensional neutron spectra gathered at the experiment facilities of BENSC [1]. The main purpose was to replace the large number of heterogeneous software packages which has been developed in the past for each neutron spectrometer separately. BEAN runs on a UNIX application server which is embedded in a client/server architecture with NFS filesystem. Data display is performed by means of the PV-WAVE software tools. For easy use the graphical user interface follows the common styling guidelines of Windows programs.

Properties of focons with a linear generatrix: I. The meridional-ray invariant and aperture angles

An invariant for meridional rays in straight, hollow, narrowing (NF) and widening (WF) focons with a linear generatrix is found by the methods of geometrical optics. The invariant allows one to solve various problems without using the approximation of the small conicity of the focon. New expressions for calculations of the aperture angles of NF and BF are obtained with the help of the invariant and its modifications. It,is shown that the maximum entrance aperture of the NF for axially symmetric beams is achieved when light is first focused inside the focon. The validity of Abbe's sine condition in focons under study is extended to the case of the large conicity.
