Software-defined networks are constantly evolving due to the updates such as network function (NF) state updates, VM migrations. network functions virtualization (NFV) with software-defined networking (SDN) has the capability of accurately monitoring and manipulating network traffic, and reducing operating cost. However, it cannot effectively handle the congestion and satisfy service level agreements (SLAs) on NF performance (e.g., throughput) while minimizing the operating cost in the scenarios of requirements for packet processing to be redistributed across a collection of NF instances simultaneously. Although OpenNF, a control plane architecture can allow quick, safe, and fine-grained reallocation of flows across NF instances, it neglects the congestion existing in practical scenarios for scheduling the updates, which can result in SLA violations. Also, it does not consider the load of links to schedule the updates for minimizing the operating cost. To address this problem, we adequately consider the congestion caused by the competition for limited resource (e.g., bandwidth) and utilize the load information to propose a load-aware and congestion-free state management (LCSM) strategy. LCSM can provide congestion-free scheduling of updates and minimize the operating cost. Extensive simulation results show the advantages of our proposed LCSM.

network function virtualization (NFV) is the paradigm of implementing network services as a network of functions on top of commodity off-the-shelf (COTS) servers. It is of profound interest to telecommunications network operators because of the promise of bringing the economics of data centers into the network. However, existing CPU, memory, and network interface architectures cause network service performance to be sensitive both to the implementation of individual network functions, but also to their placement within an NFV platform. For this reason, emerging NFV standards will confront the challenge of exposing certain platform architectural parameters to enable services to be orchestrated in an effective manner. The goal of the paper is to show that underlying technologies must be exposed to the Orchestrator during service deployment as incorrect placement can have a very significant impact on performance. We illustrate this by describing a "proof-of-concept" implementation of Quality of Service (QoS) for a Broadband Remote Access Service (BRAS)/Border network Gateway (BNG). Our work focuses on studying performance implications related to PCIe bandwidth constraints, Virtual network function (VNF) placement, message buffer (mbuf) size and memory channel utilization.

The combination of emerging concepts, such as Fog Computing, Software Defined networking and network function virtualization will contribute to transform the network into a flexible and dynamical continuum of resources, on which services can be easily deployed and managed (network programmability). In this scenario, a major topic is the use of ad hoc h/w accelerators, in particular to provide the network with general purpose High Performance Computing capabilities, whose application has been so far limited to few highly specialized contexts, such as graphics or scientific computing. However, the use of h/w acceleration is generally considered in contrast with the main NFV concepts, and a major obstacle towards network programmability. This paper argues that, on the contrary, h/w acceleration and virtualization technologies are fully compatible, and together can greatly enhance the network infrastructure. In particular, the use of Graphic Computing Units in Virtual network functions is analyzed, and their flexible management is considered, within the innovative NFV architecture designed by the EU FP7 T-Nova project.

network function virtualization (NFV) aims to decouple software network applications from their hardware in order to reduce development and deployment costs for new services. To enable the deployment of diverse network services, a reconfigurable and high performance hardware platform can bring considerable benefits to NFV. In this paper, an FPGA-based platform is proposed to perform as a protocol reconfigurable NFV switch. Logic circuit of virtual network functions can be reconfigured at run time on the proposed platform. A reconfiguration process is also proposed to enable packet loss free switch-over between virtual network functions that delivers undisrupted service. The platform can be reconfigured between Layer 1 circuit switch and Layer 2 Ethernet packet switch. Once running as a packet switch, the platform can switch over from Layer 2 Ethernet switch to Layer 3 IP parser and even Layer 4 UDP parser. Performance of the implemented 2x2 switch at 10Gbps per port delivers a minimum latency of 300 nanoseconds (circuit switch) and maximum latency of 1 microsecond. Reconfiguration between IP and UDP parser without loss of data is also demonstrated.

network function virtualization (NFV) aims to improve network agility and reduce deployment costs by using commercial off-the-shelf hardware, typically Intel x86-based servers. However, compared with ASIC or NP-based packet forwarding engines, general-purpose processors generally provide much lower performance per watt. In this work, to improve the energy efficiency of NFV, we propose VNFMotion, a power-aware CPU allocator, by exploiting the power proportionality of x86-based multi-core processors. Specifically, the allocator can aggregate the workloads onto fewer CPU cores and put the resulting idle CPU cores into sleep for power conservation. On receiving CPU overload notification, the allocator runs a VNF graph partitioning algorithm and migrates the workloads to the newly awakened CPU core. Preliminary evaluation using Linux powerstat shows that on a 40-core x86 server, VNFMotion can reduce the CPU power usage by 19.1% during light traffic.

network function virtualization (NFV) provides an efficient and flexible way to deploy network services in the form of service function chains (SFCs) by adopting generalized equipment. However, software-based virtualized network functions (VNFs) bring new challenge for network operators in providing service availability guarantees. Traditionally, network-level protection mechanisms are considered separately from function-level VNF backup mechanisms. However, a SFC's availability cannot be guaranteed if only network-level protection mechanisms or only function-level VNF backup mechanisms are considered. In this paper, we propose a coordinated protection mechanism that adopts both backup path protection in the network and VNF replicas at nodes to guarantee a SFC's availability. The proposed mechanism determines the number of replicas required for each VNF in the SFC, and allocates the replicas to physical nodes on the working and backup paths while maintaining ordered dependency among VNFs. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms contribute to reducing the SFC blocking and the cost of computing resources.

network orchestration is pivotal in automating device, equipment, and service management within the network system. Currently, network function virtualization (NFV) offers immense potential, but the challenge still lies in designing a capable orchestrator for dynamic networks. To address this challenge, we propose an AI-based NFV Orchestration Framework that leverages self-learning capabilities to detect dynamic network changes and make optimal decisions. This framework covers a range of essential functionalities, including NFV Orchestration, VNF Deployment, Service function Chaining (SFC), Auto-Scaling, Migration, Anomaly Detection, Power Management, and Attack & Intrusion Detection. These functions collectively form a comprehensive ML-driven orchestration framework that offers adaptability, intelligence, and efficiency across the entire NFV environment. Our proposed structure aims for zero-touch automation, contributing to the efficient management of dynamic NFV network environments, and making it a compelling solution for the future of networking.

Dynamic allocation of resources is a key feature in network function virtualization (NFV), enabling flexible adjustment of slices and contained network services to ever-changing service demands. Considering resource allocation across the entire network, many authors have proposed approaches to optimize the placement and chaining of virtual network function (VNF) instances and the allocation of resources to these VNF instances. In doing so, various optimization objectives are conceivable, e.g., minimizing certain required resources or the end-to-end delay of the placed services. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between four typical optimization objectives when coordinating the placement and resource allocation of chained VNF instances. We observe an interesting trade-off between minimizing the overhead of starting/stopping VNF instances and all other objectives when adapting to changed service demands.

network function virtualization provides a new network resource utilization approach which decouples network functions from proprietary hardware and enables adaptive services to end-user requests. In this paper, we present a joint design which optimally deploys network functions and allocates physical resources satisfying end-to-end requests with generated routes. We first discuss the problem behind such design and show its NP-completeness. We then propose a mixed-integer program which simultaneously identifies physical nodes to be deployed with network functions and generates routes sharing common physical resources realizing end-to-end requests. Computational results demonstrate the value of the integrated approach and its ability to allocate network functions supporting end-to-end requests with limited physical resources.

network function virtualization (NFV) is an emerging technology, which aims at replacing proprietary network function hardware devices with software-based network function (NF) applications. In NFV, it is critical to conduct dynamic and elastic resource allocation in accordance with varying workloads. State-of-the-art scaling detection algorithms are designed based on either traffic rate or runtime status. However, they cannot make precise and agile scaling decisions due to diversity of input traffic and noisy measurements. In this paper, we propose a novel graph-based scaling detection model (GSDM) using deep learning techniques. GSDM is a neural network model, which selects scaling action based on feature sequences of each NF and its adjacent NFs. Neural network provides a scalable way to incorporate both traffic rate and runtime status into control policy. Furthermore, adjacent NFs' feature information is also injected. As a result, GSDM empirically learns policies that achieves precise and agile scaling detections and improves system performance. Our implemented prototype demonstrates that GSDM achieves superior performance in precision and recall, and outperforms other schemes in a variety of network conditions.
