In this paper, we address the virtual network embedding (VNE) problem for both the delay sensitive and tolerant services in SDN-enabled satellite-terrestrial networks to maximize the service acceptance rate and the substrate network resource utilization. Software-defined networks (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) as key technologies for next generation communication network, which have the potential to improve the resource flexibility and efficiency for the satellite-terrestrial networks. One of the key challenges in SDN/NFV is to efficiently map each virtual network(VN)’s request onto the specific nodes and links of substrate network(SN), which is known as the virtual network embedding. However, the existing VNE methods do not consider the diversity and the dynamic for both the VN requests (VNRs) and the substrate network resources. Therefore, in this work, we model the differentiated services as two types of time-related VNRs, and propose one temporal graph based online strategy to solve the VNE for both the delay sensitive and tolerant service. Finally, the efficacy of the strategy has also been demonstrated through the numerical simulations.

An effective System-on-Chip (SoC) for smart Quality-of-Service (QoS) management over a virtual local area network (LAN) is presented in this study. The SoC is implemented by field programmable gate array (FPGA) for accelerating the delivery quality prediction for a service. The quality prediction is carried out by the general regression neural network (GRNN) algorithm based on a time-varying profile consisting of the past delivery records of the service. A novel record replacement algorithm is presented to update the profile, so that the bandwidth usage of the service can be effectively tracked by GRNN. Experimental results show that the SoC provides self-aware QoS management with low computation costs for applications over virtual LAN.

By decoupling virtualized network functions from the dedicated network equipment on which they run, network function virtualization (NFV) has brought a flexible and economical way to support the complex communication demands of different applications. Virtualized network functions (VNFs) can be dispatched and deployed as instances of plain software on or near the communication paths of applications to establish Service function Chains (SFCs), so as to provide special packet processing operations beyond simple packet forwarding. However, it is still a great challenge to dynamically place appropriate network functions at suitable locations so as to improve the efficiency of establishing SFCs and optimize network resource utilization. In this paper, the mechanism of dynamically deploying customized network functions via NFV is proposed. By predicting the future popularities of applications to switches, it adaptively places most of the appropriate network functions in corresponding forwarding equipment before they are massively requested. The serious latency and extra resource consumption caused by real-timely dispatching and deploying most of the requested network functions will be avoided. Then, the approach of Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) inspired multi-switch cooperative network function providing is devised. By cooperating multiple forwarding equipment on the packet transmission path, it makes full use of the already placed network functions to support packet processing operations in time with the cost and delay factors jointly considered. Simulation results show that the proposed mechanism has significant improvements in time overhead and resource utilization compared with the current state of the art. Specifically, our mechanism is capable of improving the service delay, the function utilization ratio, and the SFC adjustment efficiency by about 14%, 10% and 12% respectively, compared with corresponding work. network function virtualization (NFV) represents a virtual network whose service is provided by virtual parts of virtual machines. This type of network is easy to implement and update. In addition, NFV leading to low cost due to sharing the same resources. As is the case with other networks, NFV is not safe from attacks. Since all parts of this NFV network share the same resources, misuse attack is regarded to be the most common attack in NFVs, particularly because the attack use one or more of the resources which affect all parts of the NFV. This paper is based on using machine learning to extract rules of misuse attack detections. The tree decision C4.5 algorithm has been used to extract these rules, with nine features of network data flow. When testing the propose work with a server traffic data having more than 5 million network connections, the results show that a comparatively higher performance of the algorithm C4.5 with an accuracy of about 96%. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

network function virtualization (NFV) enables telecommunication operators to place and allocate resources dynamically to address the needs of Internet of Things (IoT), Intelligent Edge Computing (IEC) and emerging 5G services in a highly efficient manner. The efficient Virtual network function (VNF) placement and deployment largely depend on optimizing Virtual Machines (VM) compute, storage, and network resource allocation in the cloud-based platforms and their physical hosts. This research further extends our previously defined Information Model of mapped NFV Infrastructure (NFVI) and Virtualized Infrastructure Management (VIM) resources to derive VNF’s placement and optimal resource allocation. Our optimization solution IllumiCore derives the VNF’s optimal placement and minimizes the communication latency among VMs that are part of the VNF and entire communication network. The results demonstrate optimal and improved VNF placement and resource management. © SoftCOM 2021. All rights reserved.

Recently, the open-source management and orchestration (OSM) platform has attracted significant interest from academia and industry, potentially providing network function virtualization (NFV) management and orchestration solutions for European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) compliant NFV implementations. OSM has a built-in monitoring module (MON), a policy-management module (POL), and a Prometheus time-series database for metrics collection, which are the main components of ensuring service assurance in OSM. In this work, auto-scaling testing is performed with OSM after instantiating network service using the OSM community-developed virtual network functions (VNFs) and the Grafana tool for data visualization. The Prometheus database collects the metrics from the MON exporter, and scaling actions are defined in POL. Finally, we performed auto-scaling testing and demonstrated the results using the Grafana dashboard. The results showed that the auto-scaling policy was automated successfully after the virtual infrastructure manager (VIM) and VNF metrics triggered threshold violation alarms (already defined) and scaling actions were performed successfully as defined in POL. © 2021 IEEE.

network slicing technology is one of the key technologies of 5G. It can enable users to access the most suitable network on demand through the end-to-end configuration of the network and increase the flexibility of network resources. Introduced the latest progress of network slicing, including slicing architecture, slicing identification, operation process, wireless network slicing, and other key standard technical solutions. Communication networks are undergoing a major transformation through softwarization, which is changing the way networks are designed, operated, and managed. network Softwarization is an emerging paradigm where software controls the treatment of network flows, adds value to these flows by software processing, and orchestrates the on-demand creation of customized networks to meet the needs of customer applications. Software-Defined networking (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV), and network virtualization are three cornerstones of the overall transformation trend toward network softwarization. Together, they are empowering network operators to accelerate time-to-market for new services, diversify the supply chain for networking hardware and software, bringing the benefits of agility, economies of scale, and flexibility of cloud computing to networks. The enhanced programmability enabled by softwarization creates unique opportunities for adapting network resources in support of applications and users with diverse requirements. To effectively leverage the flexibility provided by softwarization and realize its full potential, it is of paramount importance to devise proper mechanisms for allocating resources to different applications and users and for monitoring their usage over time. The overarching goal of this dissertation is to advance state-of-the-art in how resources are allocated and monitored and build the foundation for effective resource management in softwarized networks. Specifically, we address four resource management challenges in three key enablers of network softwarization, namely SDN, NFV, and network virtualization. First, we challenge the current practice of realizing network services with monolithic software network functions and propose a microservice-based disaggregated architecture enabling finer-grained resource allocation and scaling. 5G/6G network slicing is identified as key enabler technology for allowing a diversity of sustainable applications while satisfying user’s requirements. A major problem of the traditional networking technologies is the use of the"one size fits all" approach that handles all types of services. In this work, we focus on drawing a new architecture born of the need of a multi-level services’ orchestration for seeking flexible intelligent management of the new generation use-cases such as massively deployed cloud and edge-cloud based IoT applications for (i) environment monitoring, (ii) Agriculture development, (iii) and new generation Augmented Reality applications in medicine or e-learning. This paper proposes a novel multi-level Delegation Architecture for network Slicing Orchestration (DANSO). DANSO proposes a multi-level delegation for slices management and optimization framework for resources allocation. Our proposal is based on three pillars: (i) definition of levels to fulfill support of network slicing deployment and management via delegated decisions (ii) split of orchestrator, manager and control roles and (iii) placement-independence of entities in (ii). DANSO has the following advantages. First, it provides an optimization mechanism for the deployment of network slices. second, it takes into consideration a negotiation process for the requested slice. Third, it manages the life-cycle not only for the Virtual network function (VNF) level but also for the dynamic deployment and suppression of the whole slices. last, it considers network slicing over several administrative domains. © 2023, CC BY.

network slicing plays a crucial role in the progression of 5G and beyond, facilitating dedicated logical networks to meet diverse and specific service requirements. The principle of End-to-End (E2E) slice includes not only a service chain of physical or virtual functions for the radio and core of 5G/6G networks but also the full path to the application servers that might be running at some edge computing or at central cloud. Nonetheless, the development and optimization of E2E network slice management systems necessitate a reliable simulation tool for evaluating different aspects at large-scale network topologies such as resource allocation and function placement models. This paper introduces Slicenet, a mininet-like simulator crafted for E2E network slicing experimentation at the flow level. Slicenet aims at facilitating the investigation of a wide range of slice optimization techniques, delivering measurable, reproducible results without the need for physical resources or complex integration tools. It provides a well-defined process for conducting experiments, which includes the creation and implementation of policies for various components such as edge and central cloud resources, network functions of multiple slices of different characteristics. Furthermore, Slicenet effortlessly produces meaningful visualizations from simulation results, aiding in comprehensive understanding. Utilizing Slicenet, service providers can derive invaluable insights into resource optimization, capacity planning, Quality of Service (QoS) assessment, cost optimization, performance comparison, risk mitigation, and Service Level Agreement (SLA) compliance, thereby fortifying network resource management and slice orchestration. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.
