network function virtualization (NFV) is an emerging technology that uses software virtualization techniques to implement network functions that are usually deployed on specific hardware and software devices. With NFV it is possible to design, deploy, and manage network functions in a fraction of the time it often takes to do the same in non-virtualized settings. NFV improves the flexibility and reduces the time for the development, deployment and management of new functions. In this paper, we propose NFV-FD: a NFV to detect process and link failures. NFV-FD relies on an OpenFlow controller from which information about the network is obtained. With this information NFV-FD keeps track of the state of both processes and links. NFV-FD was implemented and experimental results are reported for the amount of resources required by the virtual function, as well as the quality of the failure detection and notification service. © 2015 IEEE.

network anti-virus (AV) solutions are the first line of defense against malicious software. Traditional proxy-based network anti-virus solutions with store-scan-forward techniques decrease network performance and consume massive amounts of memory. Therefore, traditional solutions are not easily adaptable for network function virtualization (NFV). This paper details the work on a novel virus scanning solution for NFV, called StreamAV. It does not require a proxy and maintains high network performance with less memory usage. StreamAV conducts policy matching on streams, rather than on complete files. This eliminates buffering, thereby accelerating traffic and requiring far less memory than solutions that scan complete files. The prototype was 40 times faster than its closest open source competitor, while its memory consumption was only a fraction of that of this competitor. Coverage was 100% with random test samples. © 2015 IEEE.

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has published a Group Specification document outlining network function virtualization Management and Orchestration (NFV-MANO) systems, advocating an open environment for the purpose of integrating multiple vendor solutions into one NFV ecosystem. To align with this initiative, there is a need to transform the specification into real products with the necessary components and interfaces following the ETSI reference architecture. To support this effort, in this article we share our experience in the exploration of further refining and developing internal components of the ETSI NFV-MANO functional blocks with identified open integration interfaces. We focus on the detailed analysis of the life cycle management of the Virtual network functions (VNFs), which is the most fundamental and important functionality of NFV-MANO. Based on our analysis, we propose an abstract VNF Manager Integration Interface (VNFM Integration Interface) at the southbound of VNFM, to integrate with various clouds and systems to complete the life cycle management of the VNFs. In order to achieve advanced VNF life cycle management such as auto-scaling, a model-based monitoring solution is adopted for monitoring the VNFs across multiple layers of NFV architecture. To serve as a proof of concept, we automatically deploy and scale a sample VNF using the proposed software architecture and interfaces. With the prototyping experience using the VNF model as a plugin, to integrate with traditional virtualization and physical infrastructure hierarchy as a full topology model, we evaluate using a model-based monitoring system Dell Foglight™ for realizing NFV monitoring functionalities as part of NFV-MANO architecture framework. © 2015 IFIP.

Software Defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) provide an alluring vision of how to transform broadcast, contribution and content distribution networks. In our laboratory we assembled a multi-vendor, multi-layer media network environment that used SDN controllers and NFV-based applications to schedule, coordinate, and control media flows across broadcast and contribution network infrastructure. — This paper will share our experiences of investigating, designing and experimenting in order to build the next generation broadcast and contribution network. We will describe our experience of dynamic workflow automation of high-bandwidth broadcast and media services across multi-layered optical network environment using SDN-based technologies for programmatic forwarding plane control and orchestration of key network functions hosted on virtual machines. Finally, we will outline the prospects for the future of how packet and optical technologies might continue to scale to support the transport of increasingly growing broadcast media.

Emerging information-centric networking architectures drives a wider focus of content caching mechanisms. Most recent efforts have been attempting for server and user friendliness, i.e., reduction in content-server load and content-delivery time. Those solutions require the prior knowledge of cache state and content popularity exchanged among routers. Challenging tasks are pushed to routers since their explicit coordination is required. Instead of burdening routers, but still keeping the effectiveness of in-network caching, we move the explicit coordination task from routers to a cache orchestrator where the offline optimal caching policy is computed while leaving the simplest cache decision to the routers. By means of the network function virtualization, this paper proposes a cache orchestration lifecycle including three parts, i.e., name hit caching (NHC) policy, pending time history and network cache orchestration. By exploiting NHC policy, a router simply caches the content whose name matches its assigned content name set. Evaluation through simulations demonstrates that NHC policy achieves the lowest content-server load and content downloading time and the highest cache hit ratios in all routers comparing with leaving copy everywhere, probability caching and content-popularity-based cache orchestration policies.

The resources of dedicated accelerators (e.g. FPGA) are still required to bridge the gap between software-based Middleboxs(MBs) and the commodity hardware. To consolidate various hardware resources in an elastic, programmable and reconfigurable manner, we design and build a flexible and consolidated framework, OpenANFV, to support virtualized accelerators for MBs in the cloud environment. OpenANFV is seamlessly and efficiently put into Openstack to provide high performance on top of commodity hardware to cope with various virtual function requirements. OpenANFV works as an independent component to manage and virtualize the acceleration resources (e.g. cinder manages block storage resources and nova manages computing resources). Specially, OpenANFV mainly has the following three features. (1)Automated Management. Provisioning for multiple Virtualized network functions (VNFs) is automated to meet the dynamic requirements of NFV environment. Such automation alleviates the time pressure of the complicated provisioning and configuration as well as reduces the probability of manually induced configuration errors. (2) Elasticity. VNFs are created, migrated, and destroyed on demand in real time. The reconfigurable hardware resources in pool can rapidly and flexibly offload the corresponding services to the accelerator platform in the dynamic NFV environment. (3) Coordinating with Openstack. The design and implementation of the OpenANFV APIs coordinate with the mechanisms in Openstack to support required virtualized MBs for multiple tenants.

The maturity reached by virtualisation technology enabled great innovation for efficient applications and services development and delivery, independent of the underlying hardware equipment, especially with the large deployment of off-the-shelf hardware based cloud infrastructures. In order to take advantage of this technology, the existing network functions have to be developed and adapted to the new paradigm. However, traditional telecom services are still implemented on dedicated hardware resulting in high deployment and maintenance costs compared to the other already cloudified services. ETSI network functions Virtualisation (NFV) aims to fill this gap by applying to telecom the virtualisation technologies. This paper introduces a set of three software architectures for efficient virtualisation of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) in different operator environments responding to the high level requirements of the ETSI NFV use case for virtualizing operator core network functions. Additionally, a management architecture for simplifying the deployment and runtime orchestration of such a virtual service on top of a cloud infrastructure is presented. Furthermore, one of the IMS software architectures was implemented based on the Fraunhofer FOKUS Open IMS Core, measured and evaluated on top of an OpenStack cloud. © 2014 IEEE.

Over the years middleboxes have become a fundamental part of today’s networks. Despite their usefulness, they come with a number of problems, many of which arise from the fact that they are hardware-based: they are costly, difficult to manage, and their functionality is hard or impossible to change, to name a few. To address these issues, there is a recent trend towards network function virtualization (NFV), in essence proposing to turn these middleboxes into software-based, virtualized entities. Towards this goal we introduce ClickOS, a high-performance, virtualized software middlebox platform. ClickOS virtual machines are small (5MB), boot quickly (about 30 milliseconds), add little delay (45 microseconds) and over one hundred of them can be concurrently run while saturating a 10Gb pipe on a commodity server. We further implement a wide range of middleboxes including a firewall, a carrier-grade NAT and a load balancer and show that ClickOS can handle packets in the millions per second.
