network function virtualization (NFV) explores the virtualization technologies to offer network-as-a-Service (NaaS) through connected virtual networkfunctions. The network operations that were previously performed by specialized hardware are consolidated as software-based virtual networkfunctions (VNFs). These VNFs can be implemented in the telecom clouds with high volume servers, switches and storage. With the NFV orchestration, a service function graph (SFG) can be built to provide network services. In this paper, we study how to efficiently construct the SFG from a set of VNF requests and map the SFG onto the substrate network while considering the priority dependence between the VNFs. We define the problem of service function graph design and mapping (SFG_PD) and propose an SFG_PD mapping with dependent directional acyclic graph (SFG_DAG) algorithm. The proposed SFG_DAG algorithm can jointly construct the VNFs graph and map VNFs onto the substrate network while minimizing the bandwidth consumption in the substrate network. Our simulation and analysis show that accommodating the VNFs based on the requested bandwidth yields the best performance in terms of the total bandwidth consumption.

Isolated networkfunctions (also known as middleboxes) are difficult and costly to manage in a cooperative fashion due to their hardware-based implementation and proprietary interfaces. The integration of software-defined networking (SDN) and networkfunctions virtualization (NFV) is promising to address this challenging issue. However, an efficient framework is needed to provide cooperative control of networkfunction instances. To this end, a service chain instantiation framework based on NFV and SDN is proposed in this paper. There are three unique contributions in this work. First, the networkfunctions are featured with a new abstraction, called atomic function, which defines the public features of networkfunctions while the core details are hidden. A description-language is utilized to help service providers to develop various instances of an atomic function. Second, we propose an implementation of service chain consisting of a sequence of atomic functions with order constraints. It is instantiated by optimally selecting different function instances over the network. We formulate this service chain instantiation as an integer linear programing problem, with a simulated annealing solver to approach the optimal solution. Third, we implement a proof-of-concept for service chain, Matchmaker, atop the SDN controller. The experimental results demonstrate that Matchmaker can manage networkfunctions in an efficient and scalable way. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

networkfunctions virtualization (NFV) has recently emerged as one of the major technological driving forces that significantly accelerate the evolution of today's computer and communication networks. Despite the advantages of NFV, e.g., saving investment cost, optimizing resource consumption, improving operational efficiency, simplifying network service lifecycle management, lots of novel security threats and vulnerabilities will be introduced, thereby impeding its further development and deployment in practice. In this paper, we briefly report our threat analysis in the context of NFV, and identify the corresponding security requirements. The purpose is to establish a comprehensive threat taxonomy and provide a guideline to develop effective security countermeasures. Furthermore, a conceptual design framework for NFV based security management and service orchestration is presented, with an objective to dynamically and adaptively deploy and manage security functions on the demands of users and customers. A use case about NFV based access control is also developed, illustrating the feasibility and advantages of implementing NFV based security management and orchestration.

The ETSI model defines a generic architecture to deploy and configure virtual networkfunctions. While many efforts from both academia and industry focus on the problem of deploying those virtual networkfunctions, little attention has been given to the interface needed to configure such applications. This paper explores the problem of dynamically configuring virtual networkfunctions and proposes an implementation for the ETSI MANO OR-VNFM interface that supports generic networkfunctions by exploiting a message bus and YANG models.

The switch in video delivery from traditional medium to Over-The-Top (OTT) based services has been a game changer for stakeholders of the media delivery ecosystem. It has changed the value chain enabling Content Delivery networks and Content Providers to take the lion's share at the expense of Internet/network Service Providers. Even if establishing collaboration between them naturally appears as the key to provide good Quality of Service to the end-users, they struggle in finding efficient and fair ways to do so. This paper directly tackles this problem and proposes a new model for content delivery actors to collaborate over a Virtualized Infrastructure, fairly balancing the revenue stream created. We list the main challenges and the new technical opportunities to solve them, among which the deployment of a distributed network function virtualization (NFV) platform at the edge of the Internet Service Provider's network where a virtual Content Delivery network (vCDN) is proposed to be deployed. Furthermore, we apply a game-theoretic analysis to study different ISP-CDN collaboration models and identify optimality conditions for our proposed CDN-as-a-Virtual-network-function approach.

The virtualization technology provides many advantages to datacenters such as: reduction of power, cooling, and hardware costs. Moreover, virtualization simplifies administration and maintenance. On the other hand, for assuring security policies, a virtualized datacenter may require a large Access Control List (ACL) that can overload current commercial Top of Rack (ToR) equipment. This paper proposes and evaluates the performance of a firewall implemented as a virtualized networkfunction in the Open source Platform for networkfunctions virtualization (OPNFV) using commercial off-the-shelf servers. Results show that the function provides elastic capacity that can scale up, meeting the current ingress traffic demands.

Reducing the CAPEX and OPEX is a major concern for Telecom Operators (TOs): to this extent, network function virtualization (NFV) has been considered a key aspect to virtualize networkfunctions and push them to the NFV Infrastructure. Virtual networkfunctions (VNFs) can be deployed as a set of components running on several cooperating Virtual Machines (VMs) inside modern data centers. As a consequence, it becomes crucial for network operators to minimize the power consumption of their NFV infrastructure, by using the minimum set of physical servers and networking equipment subject to the constraints that VNFs impose on the infrastructure in terms of compute, memory, disk and network resources requirements. In this work, we present a joint resources and flow routing assignment problem for VNFs placement, with the objective of minimizing both the power consumption of the servers and switches needed to deploy the overall virtualized infrastructure and the routing graph. In contrast to many existing works assuming perfect knowledge on input parameters, such as VNFs CPU demands, which is difficult to predict, we propose a novel mathematical model based on the Robust Optimization (RO) theory to deal with data uncertainty. Our numerical evaluation focuses on a specific use-case, that is the deployment of a virtualized Evolved Packet Core (vEPC), namely the core for next generation mobile networks. We demonstrate that with our model, a vEPC operator can trade-off between two important aspects: the power consumption minimization on one side, and the protection from severe deviations of the input parameters on the other (e.g. the resources requirements).

PCI Express based innovative architectures designed for datacentre connections are proposed exploiting fiber communications for remote very high-speed connectivity. According with the ADVENT project approach a disruptive scenario based on an unique PCIe fabric is described, assuring convergent, storage/analytics functionalities mapped to a global shared memory. In particular, the hardware configuration of this kind of the proposed architecture is presented for inter-host remote communications, showing the intrinsic advantages in terms of connectivity and applications. Moreover, experimentation of PCIe Gen3 interconnections over up to 2-km standard fiber is demonstrated strictly compliant with the standard.

networkfunctions virtualization is a new technology for the future internet that eliminates the dependency of the networkfunction and the hardware requirement. The networkfunctions virtualization provides a successful approach for meeting the increase in demand of the end-to-end (E2E) services with low operational and capital costs. Replacing the network specific purpose hardware (e.g. firewall) with a software implementation of the networkfunctions in which a chain of Virtualized networkfunctions (VNFs) can logically connect the end points and provide the desired network services. However, this approach is associated with the challenge of dynamically mapping the predefined VNFs onto the existing substrate network in an optimal way. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective approach for mapping the VNFs with the physical resources in a dynamic service request environment. The algorithm considers the priority dependency between the VNFs as a case of study, with the objective of minimizing the mapping blocking rate.

Aim of this work is to create architecture by using a novel architecture composed from two logical domains - Core Management Domain and SDN/NFV domain. Core Management Domain (CMD) can be used as the means for interconnecting domains implemented and deployed by various network providers, public or private clouds or just by simple devices acting as NFV enabled devices that can create and chain virtualized networkfunctions.
