network function virtualization (NFV) enables flexible deployment of middleboxes as Virtual Machines (VMs) running on general hardware. Different types of middleboxes have the potential to either increase or decrease the volume of processed traffic. In this paper, we investigate the traffic changing effects of middleboxes, and study efficient deployment of NFV middleboxes in Software-Defined networks (SDNs). To begin with, we formulate the Traffic-Aware Middlebox Placement (TAMP) problem as a graph optimization problem, and show that it is NP-hard when there are multiple flows to consider. Next, by observing that in reality flows arrive one at a time, we leverage the SDN central control mechanism, and propose an optimal solution for the TAMP problem with a single flow. We develop the solution in two steps. First, when the flow path has been determined, we present the Least-First-Greatest-Last (LFGL) rule to place middleboxes. Second, we integrate the LFGL rule with widest-path routing to propose the LFGL based MinMax routing algorithm. Further, we have implemented the proposed algorithm as a module running on top of the Floodlight SDN controller, and conducted experiments in the Mininet emulation system. The experiment results fully demonstrate the superiority of our algorithm over other benchmark solutions.

Space-ground integrative information network is an effective method to realize the global coverage of information, and the efficient use of information and communication resources. In the face of the current situation of the space information network considered for specific and military purposes, as well as the characteristics of the closed and rigid, it becomes an urgent problem that how to realize the information service of space ground integrative and military-civilian integrative. This paper presents Open-Flow based spatial information network architecture. Firstly, the basic framework of Space-ground integrative network is introduced in detail. Secondly, the key technologies such as spatial physical resource management strategy, virtual spatial network management strategy and virtual spatial network slice management strategy, spatial application management strategy arc designed in detail. This structure can realize the flexible control of the space information network, the integration of the fusion, the open programmable and the flexibility of the space information network.

Virtual network functions (VNFs) promise great efficiencies in deploying and operating new services, in terms of performance, resiliency and cost. However, today most operational VNF clouds are still generally static after their initial instantiation, thus not realizing many of the potential benefits of virtualization and enhanced orchestration. In this paper, we explore a large-scale operational instantiation of a virtual Domain Name System (vDNS) and present an analytical framework and platform to improve its efficiency during normal and adverse network traffic conditions, such as those caused by Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks and site failures. Using dynamic virtual machine instantiation, we show that under normal daily cycles we can run vDNS resolvers at higher target load, increasing the transactional efficiency of the underlying hardware by more than 10%, and improving client latency due to lower recursion rates. We demonstrate a method of reducing reaction time and service impacts due to malicious network traffic, such as during a DDoS event, by automatically redeploying virtual resources at selected nodes in the network. We quantify the tradeoff between spare hardware costs and latency under site failures, taking advantage of SDN controller-based flow redirection. This work is part of AT&T's ongoing network transformation through network function virtualization (NFV), software-defined networking (SDN), and enhanced orchestration.

network function virtualization (NFV) enables to implement network functions in software, high-speed packet processing functions which traditionally are dominated by hardware implementations. Virtualized network functions (NFs) may be deployed on generic-purpose servers, e.g., in datacenters. The latter enables flexibility and scalability which previously were only possible for web services deployed on cloud platforms. The merit of NFV is challenged by control challenges related to the selection of NF implementations, discovery and reservation of sufficient network and server resources, and interconnecting both in a way which fulfills SLAs related to reliability and scalability. This paper details the role of a scalable orchestrator in charge of finding and reserving adequate resources. The latter will steer network and cloud control and management platforms to actually reserve and deploy requested services. We highlight the role of involved interfaces, propose elements of algorithmic components, and will identify major blocks in orchestration time in a proof of concept prototype which accounts for most functional parts in the considered architecture. Based on these evaluations, we propose several architectural enhancements in order to implement a highly scalable network orchestrator for carrier and cloud networks.

With the proliferation of mobility demands and network services, network operators in enterprise Wireless Local Area network (WLAN) must implement a flexible and centralized network management to keep pace with this trend. Unfortunately, due to the inflexible network architecture and closed network equipments, the traditional network faces a series of challenges, like network expansibility and mobility issues. In this paper, we propose a new architecture named Light-weighted Edge network virtualization (LENV), which achieves edge network functions virtualization by leveraging the Software Defined networking (SDN) approach in enterprise WLAN. LENV virtualizes edge network functions towards a centralized logical module which hosts in the wireless access point (AP) for each client under the controller's strategies. Therefore, network functions can be deployed more flexibly based on client's requirements and network status. In addition, combined management schemes consisting of association control, access control and mobility management have been considered and studied in LENV, which ensure enterprise WLAN extensible and stable. In the end, our further simulation shows that LENV can significantly benefit mobility and security in enterprise WLAN.

Load balancing is one of the most basic services needed by cloud applications. While today's clouds and load balancers provide highly customizable load distribution policies, they are forced out of necessity to ignore the impact of load balancing on the network. However, such network agnostic behavior can lead to inefficient utilization of cloud resources and poor performance, especially for upcoming network centric applications such as network function virtualization (NFV). But can network topology, a cloud property that is hidden from tenants, be made to effectively influence load balancing, a function that is intimately tied to per-tenant application structure that is largely invisible to the cloud? We answer that question in this paper by presenting Airfoil, a novel topology-aware distributed load balancer as a service (LBaaS) that takes network topology into consideration while providing cloud tenants with application-specific load balancing policies. By finding the best communication pattern with linear programming, the most efficient load balancing strategy is calculated without using any heuristics or approximations. We evaluate Airfoil over a range of scenarios from classical web applications to NFV pipelines, and show that it can decrease the network utilization of the most highly loaded network links by over 50%. For network constrained applications, such reductions imply a doubling of application capacity without any additional infrastructure.

network function virtualization has received attention from both academia and industry as an important shift in the deployment of telecommunication networks and services. It is being proposed as a path towards cost efficiency, reduced time-to-markets, and enhanced innovativeness in telecommunication service provisioning. However, efficiently running virtualized services is not trivial as, among other initialization steps, it requires first mapping virtual networks onto physical networks, and thereafter mapping and scheduling virtual functions onto the virtual networks. This paper formulates the online virtual function mapping and scheduling problem and proposes a set of algorithms for solving it. Our main objective is to propose simple algorithms that may be used as a basis for future work in this area. To this end, we propose three greedy algorithms and a tabu search-based heuristic. We carry out evaluations of these algorithms considering parameters such as successful service mappings, total service processing times, revenue, cost etc, under varying network conditions. Simulations show that the tabu search-based algorithm performs only slightly better than the best greedy algorithm.

network functions virtualization (NFV) is a recent industrial trend which gains a lot of attention from telecom operators and vendors. The NFV concept delivers network services using commercial off-the-shelf hardware and IT virtualization technologies, thus virtualizing entire classes of network node functions. Traditional and recent data-center architectures are mostly built and optimized for data storage or web based applications. However, NFV type applications have different characteristics with respect to network load and needed computing capacity, which may impact the data-center design. Therefore in this paper, we are motivated to model the characteristics of NFV type applications and investigate the suitability of current data-center architectures for such new applications.

The network functions virtualization (NFV) paradigm is the most promising technique to help network providers in the reduction of capital and energy costs. The deployment of virtual network functions (VNFs) running on generic x86 hardware allows higher flexibility than the classical middleboxes approach. NFV also reduces the complexity in the deployment of network services through the concept of service chaining, which defines how multiple VNFs can be chained together to provide a specific service. As a drawback, hosting multiple VNFs in the same hardware can lead to scalability issues, especially in the processing-resource sharing. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of two different types of costs that must be taken into account when multiple chained VNFs share the same processing resources: the upscaling costs and the context switching costs. Upscaling costs are incurred by VNFs multicore implementations, since they suffer a penalty due to the needs of load balancing among cores. Context switching costs arise when multiple VNFs share the same CPU and thus require the loading/saving of their context. We model through an ILP problem the evaluation of such costs and we show their impact in a VNFs consolidation scenario, when the x86 hardware deployed in the network is minimized.

network function virtualization (NFV) and Service Chaining (SC) are novel service deployment approaches in the contemporary cloud environments for increased flexibility and cost efficiency to the Application Service Providers and network Providers. However, NFV and SC are still new and evolving topics. Optimized placement of these virtual functions is necessary for acceptable latency to the end-users. In this work we consider the problem of optimal Virtual function (VF) placement in a multi-cloud environment to satisfy the client demands so that the total response time is minimized. In addition we consider the problem of dynamic service deployment for OpenADN, a novel multi-cloud application delivery platform.
