The Service function Chain (SFC) has become a popular paradigm to complete mobile services due to the advancements in Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and network function virtualization (NFV). This new computing and networking paradigm allows Virtual network functions (VNFs) to be placed in physical devices within MEC-NFV networks cost-effectively and flexibly. However, most existing VNF placement algorithms are complex, unscalable, and time-consuming. In this paper, we investigate the VNF placement problem in MEC-NFV networks and formulate an optimization model to optimize network resource utilization. We introduce a novel Deep Learning-based VNF Placement Approach (DLVPA) that intelligently selects nodes and places VNFs for SFC requests. Performance evaluations demonstrate that DLVPA can effectively improve network resource utilization. © 2023 ACM.

The increasing demand for scalable, flexible, and adaptable network infrastructures has led to the growing popularity of network function virtualization (NFV) in modern networks. Virtual network functions (VNFs) and Cloud-Native network functions (CNFs) are virtualized network services that can be arranged in a specific sequence called Service function Chaining (SFC). However, multiple path failures in the service function path pose a significant challenge for SFC. To address this issue, this research proposes an Improved Ant Colony Optimization (SFC-ACO) algorithm that integrates Mixed Integer Programming (MILP) constraints into the traditional Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm. The algorithm is implemented using Kubernetes Cluster with OpenStack Magnum. The proposed algorithm generates a path that meets CNF requirements while minimizing end-to-end delay and providing alternative paths in case of path failure. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in optimizing end-to-end delay compared to the generic ACO algorithm, highlighting its potential as a practical solution for network operators in 5G networks. © 2023 IEEE.

As a new paradigm, network function virtualization (NFV) enables flexible and customized service provisioning. NFV decouples network functions from dedicated hardware devices, and a set of Virtual network functions (VNFs) are chained in a predefined order as a Service function Chain (SFC) to build customized network services. Considering the increase in network scale and dependency relationship between different VNFs, how to efficiently place the SFCs in multi-domain networks to meet Quality of Service (QoS) requirements is a serious challenge for NFV. In this paper, we focus on the SFC placement optimization problem in multi-domain networks taking in account VNF dependency relationships and QoS requirements. First, the SFC placement optimization problem in multi-domain networks is formulated as a multi-objective optimization model with the aim to maximize service acceptance ratio and minimize operational cost while guaranteeing delay requirement of SFC requests. Then we propose a Dependency Aware and delay Guaranteed heuristic SFC Placement algorithm, called DAGP, to automatically place the VNFs in multi-domain networks in an adaptive and cost efficient manner. Finally, evaluation results demonstrate that compared with comparison mechanisms, our proposed SFC placement algorithm can obtain higher service acceptance ratio and smaller operational cost. © 2023 IEEE.

Recent advances in network management strategies, namely the possibility of network programmability through the use of Software-Defined networking (SDN) increase the velocity of network evolutions. SDN promises a software-based networking approach, where software modules are used to abstract network functionalities. To achieve this aim, the virtualization paradigm can be used in these modules within the context of network function Virtualisation (NFV). NFV plays the most important role in transition toward open software and network hardware. Given the promise of these technologies, micro-services can greatly benefit from the integration of SDN and NFV and execute in a suitable cloud platform. This paper describes a modular, and micro-service based SDN architecture that applies network programmability within the context of NFV and explores how it could benefit from the serverless computing paradigm. Serverless computing accompanies modular SDN in building cost-effective, energy-aware, and scalable networks, relieving the management burden of network maintenance. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The rising data volumes force significant bottlenecks on the 6G for IoT (6G-IoT) network management functions, which limits the control, flexibility, and interoperability among devices, protocols, and end applications. Solutions like software-defined networking (SDN), and network function virtualization (NFV) are proposed with 6G, but the core management operations are still manual. Thus, to automatically upscale these 6G-IoT networks at reduced cost orchestration complexity, zero-touch networks (ZTN) are proposed. ZTN in 6G-IoT allows a high degree of automation and seamless integration of services. The article proposes a scheme, Zero-Load, that integrates ZTN at the core routing functionality of the 6G-IoT applications. We present a load balancing and traffic classification scheme through the ZTN networking stack for core routers. The ZTN router configuration fabric connects applications with the core services. Further, we present a Gaussian kernel-based support vector machine (SVM) classifier at the ZTN automation layer, which classifies the normal traffic and attack traffic. The proposed work is compared for parameters like mean time to response (MTTR), and resolution latency against baseline SDN and NFV schemes. Using ZTN, an average improvement of 32.45% is obtained in MTTR, and 87.89% in resolution latency (against a query). Using the Gaussian RBF kernel, an accuracy of 0.9914 is reported. These results indicate that ZTN-based management paves the way toward a more dense and intelligent 6G-IoT network. © 2023 IEEE.

Current network function Virtualisation (NFV) orchestration frameworks lack intelligence and handle resources in a reactive manner while neglecting Virtualised network function (VNF)-level service performance. This article introduces a novel NFV analysis framework and methodology, which is able to operate in conjunction with already standardised or forthcoming, Artificial Intelligence based VNF management processes. This framework comprises a profile-based data-driven method for the analysis of VNF-level service performance. The novel potential of the proposed method lies in the fact that instead of providing and working with some volatile monitoring metrics for reactive service management, we analyse the impact of the underlying virtualised system's resource configurations and each VNF's input data rate, on the performance characteristics of that VNF and its resource utilisation. This will help network operators by providing insights on the resource utilisation and performance behaviour of a VNF to make proactive and efficient resource management plans to meet the targeted service performance. For the evaluation of our proposed approach, an autonomous profiling method is used to perform benchmarking and monitoring and generate real profile information of VNFs in a real deployment environment. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a novel Space-Air-Ground Integrated networks (SAGINs) architecture based on cloud-edge collaboration leveraging network function virtualization (NFV). The cloud-based services are provisioned by the selected ground datacenters (DCs) and the traffic is processed by the virtual network function (VNF) hosted in edge nodes and DCs. DCs provide various cloud-oriented network services, and edge nodes enable flexible solutions for SFC provisioning. We apply anycast to further improve the agility of SFC provisioning. From these perspectives, we investigate the cloud-serving and edge-processing SFC provisioning problem leveraging anycast, concerning DC assignment, edge and VNF placement, and SFC mapping simultaneously. A mixed integer linear program (MILP) model is formulated to jointly minimize the communication and computation cost subject to their trade-off. A decomposition approach is further developed for the sake of scalability. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme provides savings of up to 12.44% overall cost. © 2023 IEEE.

network functions virtualization (NFV) mainly meets the various performance requirements of network services and improves the performance/cost ratio through the decoupling of software and hardware. However, the limited resources and the dynamic nature of requests in NFV scenarios pose challenges to network operators in allocating resources and reducing operating expenses, thus the need for surplus resource prediction. Existing models only consider either spatial or temporal correlation of the residual resource data. Moreover, existing work often considers the change of the remaining resources of the node or link separately, ignoring the potential relationship between the two resources. This paper proposes a prediction model based on spatial-temporal correlation for predicting the remaining resources of each node and link in the network. By capturing the spatial and temporal correlation of the residual resource data at the same time, the model comprehensively considers the correlation between the remaining node and link resources and constructs an improved sequence-to-sequence model. Experiments show that the proposed model can significantly improve the prediction accuracy compared with the conventional models. © 2023 IEEE.

In network scenarios where 5G and cloud computing are deeply applied, reasonable deployment of VNFs, rational routing and spectrum allocation in elastic optical networks are all conducive to optimizing the resource allocation of the entire network. The multi-objective optimization model obtains a set of service function chain deployment and link mapping strategies by considering multiple factors to provide a comprehensive solution. In this paper, a five-objective optimization model is established to minimize node resource consumption, link maximum frequency slot number, node load difference, unreliability of deployed nodes and mapped links, and service source-to-destination propagation delay. On this basis, a hierarchical reservation adaptive evolutionary algorithm based on the NSGA-II is proposed to solve the proposed optimization model. The algorithm adopts a combined method to jointly code the node selection scheme and the link mapping scheme, and integrates a hybrid initialization method to generate an initial population that consider both diversity and convergence. To improve the global optimization ability of the algorithm, we add a two-stage crossover mechanism, a dominated solutions hierarchical retention mechanism, and a last-ranking elimination mechanism when the solutions are not dominated by each other, as well as a neighborhood correction mechanism for illegitimate solutions and a two-stage flip-flop strategy for jumping out of the local optimum. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. © 2023 IEEE.

With the development of digital transformation, the integration of 5G networks and vertical industry applications becomes the trendency.
