network function virtualization promises better utilization of computational resources by dynamically scaling resources on demand. However, most network functions (NFs) are stateful and require state updates on a per-packet basis. During a scaling operation, cores need to synchronize access to a shared state to avoid race conditions and to guarantee that NFs process packets in arrival order. Unfortunately, the classic approach to control concurrent access to a shared state with locks does not scale to today's throughput and latency requirements. Moreover, network traffic is highly skewed, leading to load imbalances in systems that use only sharding to partition the NF states. To address these challenges, we present Dyssect, a system that enables dynamic scaling of stateful NFs by disaggregating the states of network functions. By carefully coordinating actions between cores and a central controller, Dyssect migrates shards and flows between cores for load balancing or traffic prioritization without resorting to locks or reordering packets. Our experimental evaluation shows that Dyssect reduces tail latency up to 32% and increases throughput up to 19:36% when compared to state-of-the-art competing solutions.

network function virtualization has established itself as one of the most important paradigms towards software-based networking. While today Virtual network functions (VNFs) are typically deployed in the form of serverful virtual-machine or container-based applications, the emergence of serverless computing opens the door to the possibility of implementing them as serverless functions, with benefits in terms of scalability and resource efficiency. This paper aims to assess whether this really makes sense or not, given the system-level overheads that a serverless computing platform naturally brings. We propose an open source platform designed to optimize the execution of network-intensive VNFs and we implement a data-plane and a control-plane function (i.e., NAT and DHCP responder, respectively) as serverless functions. We carry out extensive benchmarking of performance with their serverful counterparts, implemented as stand-alone containerized applications. Our experience makes it possible to conclude that serverless computing is beneficial for the execution of short-lived and request-based control-plane VNFs, while it should be avoided for the execution of data-plane traffic-intensive VNFs.

network function Visualization (NFV) is a technology that promises to provide greater flexibility and dynamism than the traditional, conventional networks with middlebox hardware. These benefits bring with them the challenge of calculating routes and locating multiple virtual network functions (VNF) in the network nodes to respond to complex traffic requirements. This problem is called virtual network function chaining placement (VNF Chaining Placement, VNF-CP) which has been discussed in the context of static optimization for both static and dynamic traffic. Given the dynamics and complexity of the VNF-CP problem, this paper proposes a framework that combines dynamic multi-objective optimization (DMO) and multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) in the process of solution deployment. The framework makes five actions in each operational cycle: it receives and analyses network traffic, determines the most relevant objective functions based on the traffic state, recomputes the non-dominated solutions set using a DMO algorithm, and finally selects a solution to deploy using an MCDM algorithm. In order to determine the effectiveness of the framework, the performance of dynamic multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (DMOEA) has been studied, state-of-the-art competitive (DNSGAII-A and DNSGAII-B) compared to traditional MOEAs, non-dynamic (NSGAIII, MOEAD, and REVEA) considering TOPSIS as MCDM scheme. The results of numeric simulations in the test instances show that the dynamic DMOEAs resolve the VNF-CP problem competitively and with promising results compared to traditional MOEAs.

network slicing has been at the forefront of 5G network research, with various slicing orchestration architectures seeking to reap the benefits of slicing for the enhanced performance and reliability of 5G (and beyond) network services. In this context, cross-slice communication (CSC) has drawn significant attention, since CSC can foster interactions among services deployed in co-located slices, lowering the barrier for the consumption of services. To capitalize the benefits of CSC (e.g., reduced latency and cost), CSC should be established with the highest degree of co-location and also in a secure and policy-compliant manner. To this end, we present an orchestration framework that fulfills all main technical requirements for CSC instantiation. In this respect, we elaborate on the CSC instantiation workflows and shed light into the cross-layer interactions that span our proposed CSC orchestrator, the network function virtualization Orchestrator (NFVO) and the Virtualized Infrastructure Manager (VIM). Our experimental results indicate that our proposed CSC orchestration framework introduces a negligible performance overhead and also incurs a minimal latency inflation compared to a direct form of inter-slice communication without any provision for security and resource isolation.

This paper proposes an availability-aware service provisioning model with backup sub-chain-enabled sharing in network function virtualization to minimize the deployment cost. A sub-chain consists of a set of ordered VNFs that corresponds to a part of or the whole function chain of a service. Different from a conventional model in which a backup sub-chain is dedicated to protecting a primary sub-chain of one service, the proposed model allows the backup sub-chain sharing among services to reduce the deployment cost. Due to the complexity of the investigated problem, a heuristic is designed to tackle it. The numerical results show that the proposed model achieves lower deployment cost with satisfying the availability requirement than the conventional one.

The generation of synthetic network traffic is necessary to several fundamental networking activities, ranging from device testing to path monitoring, with implications on security and management. While literature focused on high-rate traffic generation, for many use cases accurate traffic generation is of importance instead. These scenarios have expanded with network function virtualization, Software Defined networking, and Cloud applications, which introduce further causes for alterations of generated traffic. Such causes are described and experimentally evaluated in this work, where the generation accuracy of D-ITG, an open-source software generator, is investigated in a virtualized environment. A definition of accuracy in terms of Mean Absolute Percentage Error of the sequences of Payload Lengths (PLs) and Inter-Departure Times (IDTs) is exploited to this end. The tool is found accurate for all PLs and for IDTs greater than one millisecond, and after the correction of a systematic error, also from 100 mu s.

network function virtualization (NFV) has becoming an emerging technology for ensuring the reliability and security of data flows. The virtual network function (VNF) embedding problem, which tries to minimize the embedding cost has attracted extensive interests recently. However, the existing works always assume the fixed execution order of VNFs, which limits their application. Thus, we investigate the VNF embedding problem without such limitations in this paper. Firstly, a general transformation framework is proposed for the NFV-enabled unicast routing with adjustable order. Then, an optimal algorithm is proposed for the unicast VNF embedding without delay constraints. Additionally, an efficient algorithm is also proposed for such problem with delay constraints. Finally, we evaluate the proposed algorithms via numerical results, which show that our algorithms significantly outperform the existing benchmarks.

HELICON is a novel hierarchical Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach for orchestrating the dynamic placement of Virtual network functions (VNFs) in Cloud and Edge 5G environments. It proves capable of addressing an NP-Hard decision-making problem with adopted RL while augmenting the current state of the art in orchestrators with a previously unexplored lightweight distributed and hierarchical RL approach. HELICON can run as a fully autonomous solution or complement orchestrators, thus bridging a significant gap in existing orchestrators, which generally lack intelligent and dynamic adaptation capabilities. Finally, our performance evaluation results over an actual 5G city testbed and use case validate that HELICON outperforms traditional policy-based Open Source MANO and other heuristic policies concerning single or multi-objective optimisation goals. What is more, HELICON's performance meets with that of node-specific custom supervised learning models, whereas it clearly outperforms supervised learning under dynamic conditions.

Satellite networks can help extend wider communication coverage and provide more types of services;and introducing service function chain (SFC) to satellite networks can enhance their flexibility and scalability. However, this highly challenges the complexity and efficiency of network service management. In this work, we first present an intent-driven satellite network service management architecture. It provides a user-oriented programmable and customizable service provisioning mechanism, which can improve the flexibility and efficiency in service delivery and provisioning. Furthermore, we elaborate an intent-driven SFC deployment scheme, which is termed as ISFC. The presented ISFC is with the intent parsing, network function virtualization infrastructure point of presence selecting, and the optimal service function path generation. Finally, we provide the ISFC deployment algorithm. And the simulation results show that the presented ISFC scheme can well satisfy user's requirements with much lower delay.

The fifth-generation network (5G) can support diverse service requirements via network Slicing (NS). NS decouples the physical network infrastructure into multiple logically isolated networks enabled via Software Defined networks (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV). Firstly, this paper proposes a blockchain-enabled network slice (BcNS) to bridge the gap between slice isolation and resource sharing. Secondly, with the aim of minimizing the deployment cost, we formulate a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to minimize the cost of network slice deployment as the optimization goal. Experimental platform is established to verify the feasibility of the designed implementation. The results show that the architecture achieves performance isolation, security isolation, and reliability isolation between different network slices.
