network function virtualization (NFV) technology facilitates flexible and fast service provisioning by deploying network functions in wished positions and chaining order as Service function Chain (SFC). Empirically, if the processing inside some Virtual network functions (VNFs) does not relate to each other, parallel chaining them can further improve the performance, such as reducing the end-to-end hops of SFCs. However, it is often ignored that parallel deploy VNFs will also introduce additional VNFs to replicate, distribute, and merge data. This will add hops and increase resource consumption. Will parallel deployment of VNFs in SFCs necessarily bring benefits? Regarding multiple parallel forms of an SFC, which one is the best? Further, how does the service process of the NFV network affect the parallel decisions of VNFs? In this paper, we design an NFV orchestrator, DP-NFVO, to maximize the revenue of NFV Service Providers and provide quantitative insights into the impact of parallel VNFs deployment. Precisely, we first refine existing VNF parallelism rules and discuss the impact of VNF parallelism on latency and resource consumption, and analyze the optimal form of parallelism for SFCs. Second, we decompose the service request process in NFV networks into multiple stages and provide a joint model of VNF parallelism and deployment. Further, we design a VNF online deployment and parallelism decision policy for DP-NFVO based on Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) to maximize revenue. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness and adaptability of DP-NFVO on parallel processing and the requests service process with extensive experiments.

network function virtualization (NFV) is an emerging technology that extracts network functions from dedicated devices and instantiates them in the form of Virtual network functions (VNFs). In this paper, we focus on the multi-traffic scheduling in VNF-based service orchestration. We propose a dynamic multi-service Quality of Service (QoS) Guarantee approach, which aims to reduce data coupling between multiple services and bandwidth pre-emption. Then we devise a service scheduling algorithm to allocate link resources for network services. The simulation results demonstrate that our method efficiently reduces network congestion and ensures high-priority services' trouble-free running.

Despite the many advantages of network function virtualization (NFV) technology, the dependability of virtual services must be carefully addressed so that NFV can meet the requirements of commercial carriers. In particular, it is essential to provide mechanisms to ensure their correct and continuous operation. In this work we propose NHAM: an NFV High Availability Module designed within the NFV-MANO (NFV Management and Orchestration) reference model. NHAM allows the creation and management of fault-tolerant virtual network services consisting of stateful VNFs (Virtualized network functions) and SFCs (Service function Chains). The proposed architecture provides fault management, including a choice of recovery mechanisms that can be applied depending on the specific needs of each service. The solution is holistic in the sense that it does not require any modifications of the source code of VNFs/SFCs to make them fault-tolerant. The strategy is based on SFC buffer management coupled with VNF checkpoint/restore, providing high availability in a transparent way. A prototype was implemented and experimental results are presented.

network function virtualization technology provides the advantages of resource integration and flexible deployment for communication system, which has been widely used in ground equipment. With the demand of high reliability, intelligence and low cost for onboard integrated equipment becoming more and more urgent, onboard equipment puts forward new requirement for network function virtualization technology. The existing customized onboard equipment has a series of problems, such as poor universality, resource redundancy and high cost. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes a resource pooling architecture based on high integration. This architecture can effectively improve the universality of onboard equipment. Through intelligent load management, this architecture can achieve flexible allocated, improve resource utilization rate and the reliability of system can be improved. The architecture has great practical value and theoretical significance for the future planning and development of onboard equipment.

The ability to dynamically scale in/out network functions (NFs) on multiple cores/servers to meet traffic demands is a key benefit of network function virtualization (NFV). The stateful NF operations make NFV scaling a challenging task: if care is not taken, NFV scaling can lead to incorrect operations and poor performance. We advocate two general abstractions, NFLOW and Match-Value Table (MVT), for NFV packet processing pipelines. We present formal definitions of the abstractions and discuss how they can facilitate NFV scaling by minimizing or eliminating shared states. Using NFs implemented with the proposed abstractions, we conduct extensive experiments and demonstrate their efficacy in terms of correctness and performance of NFV scaling.

End-to-End (E2E) network slicing enables wireless networks to provide diverse services on a common infrastructure. Each E2E slice, including resources of radio access network (RAN) and core network, is rented to mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) to provide a specific service to end-users. RAN slicing, which is realized through wireless network virtualization, involves sharing the frequency spectrum and base station antennas in RAN. Similarly, in core slicing, which is achieved by network function virtualization, data center resources such as commodity servers and physical links are shared between users of different MVNOs. In this paper, we study E2E slicing with the aim of minimizing the total energy consumption. The stated optimization problem is non-convex that is solved by a suboptimal algorithm proposed here. The simulation results show that our proposed joint power control, server and link allocation (JPSLA) algorithm achieves 30% improvement compared to the disjoint scheme, where RAN and core are sliced separately.

Communication networks and the systems they interconnect are going through a phase of tremendous change. The former agnostic delivery of content between endpoints has given way to networks increasingly adding functionality beyond moving data. Softwarization technologies including network function virtualization (NFV) and soft-ware-defined networking (SDN) are key enablers that introduce computing into the network. This revolution, especially for mobile communication networks, represents a major paradigm shift away from agnostic data delivery. Subsequently, there is a significant need to provide well-defined environments offering replicability to effectively test and evaluate protocols and mechanisms that integrate computing into networks. This article presents the Communication networks Emulator (ComNetsEmu), which provides an SDN and NFV network emulation environment based on community-embraced open source packages and enables replicable research and development on limited resource commodity hardware. In this article, we describe the underlying ComNetsEmu architecture and provide a hands-on description of its use for researchers, practitioners, and educators alike.

Service function Chaining (SFC) is an enabling technology to provide end-to-end service differentiation according to specific user requirements. Although emerging technologies such as Software-Defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) are perfect enablers for SFC, hardware limitation of Ternary-Content Addressable Memories (TCAMs) can be an obstacle when handling a large variability of SFC requests, derived from the increasing number of users, and the heterogeneity of applications and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. This article introduces and investigates the problem of TCAM size limitation on the classification procedure of SFC requests in SDN-based SFC environments. To overcome this limitation, the classification of incoming SFC requests is proposed to be offloaded to transient nodes when the occupation of the ingress node flow table is close to its maximum. An Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulation is provided to formalize the Chain Request Classification Offloading (CRCO) problem, that consists in maximizing the number of SFC requests that can be served. Furthermore, a heuristic algorithm is presented to solve the CRCO problem in feasible time. The performance evaluation carried out over two real topologies, shows that the proposed offloading strategy can greatly increase the number of accepted requests without significantly affecting the network QoS.

Software Defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) are complementary and core components of modernized networks. In this paper, we consider the problem of reconfiguring Service function Chains (SFC) with the goal of bringing the network from a sub-optimal to an optimal operational state. We propose optimization models based on the make-before-break mechanism, in which a new path is set up before the old one is torn down. Our method takes into consideration the chaining requirements of the flows and scales well with the number of nodes in the network. We show that, with our approach, the network operational cost defined in terms of both bandwidth and installed network function costs can be reduced and a higher acceptance rate can be achieved, while not interrupting the flows.

The Softwarization of networks is enabled by the SDN (Software-Defined networking), NV (network virtualization), and NFV (network function virtualization) paradigms, and offers many advantages for network operators, service providers and data-center providers. Given the strong interest in both industry and academia in the softwarization of telecommunication networks and cloud computing infrastructures, a series of special issues was established in IEEE Transactions on network and Service Management, which aims at the timely publication of recent innovative research results on the management of softwarized networks.
