Industry 4.0 requires efficient, automated, and interconnected production environments supported by robust industrial networks for real-time communication and control. Integrating XG-PON with IEEE TSN poses significant challenges due to standard gaps. This paper introduces a novel virtualized SDN layer enabling XG-PON systems to function as IEEE TSN bridges. The SDN layer manages synchronization (IEEE 1588), traffic (IEEE 802.1Qbv/bu), and network orchestration through virtualized controllers. By extending existing standards (ETSI F5G, ITU-T ***) and addressing interoperability issues, we ensure seamless XG-PON integration within IEEE TSN networks, fostering innovation and efficiency in Industry 4.0 applications through dynamic configuration, improved performance, reduced vendor lock-in, and faster feature adoption.

MTDNS: Moving Target Defense for Resilient DNS Infrastructure

One of the most critical components of the Internet that an attacker could exploit is the DNS (Domain Name System) protocol and infrastructure. Researchers have been constantly developing methods to detect and defend against the attacks against DNS, specifically DNS flooding attacks. However, most solutions discard packets for defensive approaches, which can cause legitimate packets to be dropped, making them highly dependable on detection strategies. In this paper, we propose MTDNS, a resilient MTD-based approach that employs Moving Target Defense techniques through Software Defined networking (SDN) switches to redirect traffic to alternate DNS servers that are dynamically created and run under the network function virtualization (NFV) framework. The proposed approach is implemented in a testbed environment by running our DNS servers as separate Virtual network functions, NFV Manager, SDN switches, and an SDN Controller. The experimental result shows that the MTDNS approach achieves a much higher success rate in resolving DNS queries and significantly reduces average latency even if there is a DNS flooding attack. © 2024, CC BY.

5G introduces various innovations and opportunities across network infrastructures, with network slicing and network function virtualization (NFV) being significant contributions. These technologies support diverse applications, infrastructure, and connectivity. NFV, in particular, enables different network functions to serve various user requests via the control plane and handle traffic via the data plane. However, network functions involved in handling control plane requests, such as the Access and Mobility Management function (AMF), are targeted by attackers, particularly through Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. This work addresses DoS attacks during the slice synchronization process. To assess the impact of these attacks, we analyzed their effects and conducted a vulnerability assessment using attack graphs, demonstrating the impact on various network functions of 5G Core (5GC) networks. Our approach leverages dynamic thresholding and ensemble learning techniques for effective mitigation. Initially, we compute the Power Spectral Density (PSD)-based entropy and compare it against dynamic threshold values. To enhance detection accuracy and address instances not covered by the PSD-entropy method, we employ an ensemble learning-based classification algorithm. Our proposed method achieves better accuracy across various types of traffic and differing numbers of attackers.

The mobile networks are rapidly evolving, transitioning from specialized hardware to fully virtualized platforms that run on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware powered by general-purpose processors. Mobile operators are increasingly adopting network functions virtualization (NFV) to take advantage of virtualization benefits, such as ease of deployment, flexibility, and cost savings. A crucial component of this transformation is the implementation of virtualized Radio Access network (vRAN) solutions, which provide a cost-effective way to deploy the 5G and beyond RAN as a containerized network function (CNF) on COTS hardware. vRAN is more efficient than traditional RAN, as it allows multiple base station workloads to be multiplexed on the same hardware, potentially co-located with other workloads. However, ensuring consistent performance of vRAN workloads in this consolidated environment is challenging due to the high variability and unpredictability arising from contentions for shared system resources such as CPU cores, Last Level Cache (LLC), and Memory Bandwidth. Thus, there is a strong need to understand the vRAN components if they are affected by any system resource. This paper presents an understanding of how the next-generation scalable processors can be used to run the vRAN components and presents a detailed analysis of the controllable knobs such as CPU, LLC, Memory Bandwidth, and energy consumption. The proposed vRAN profiling shows that the observed throughput varies significantly based on the number of pinned CPU cores (e.g., up to $250 \text{Mbits} / \text{sec}$), and also similar performance observed with other system resources - LLC allocation and Memory Bandwidth.

This paper presents a preliminary architecture for the integration of Time-Sensitive networking (TSN) communications into the network functions virtualization (NFV) architectural framework. Synergies between functional blocks and constructs of NFV, and components of TSN networks, are investigated in order to arrive at an integrated architecture. As we embrace the dawn of the 5G era, the fusion of Software Defined network (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) technologies has heralded a new epoch in network architecture. This provides indispensable capabilities and virtualized infrastructure to meet the burgeoning demands of modern networks. Yet, with each stride forward in mobile communication technology, security threats loom larger, casting a shadow over the very fabric of our networks. In this context, identifying and addressing these threats is crucial as it plays a key role in enhancing the security of a 5G-Advanced and a next 6G mobile communication technologies. Therefore, this paper undertakes an investigative journey to explore security threats introduced by SDN/NFV technologies in the 5G-Advanced core networks. Through our simulations, we unveil a need for fortified security technologies within the 5G-Advanced core networks, illuminating a path towards the creation of bespoke datasets tailored for the trends of 5G-Advanced security research.

network slicing (NS) is one of the major capabilities of the 5G network architecture. It is a key feature that leverages network function virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined networking (SDN) to create isolated and flexible logical networks on top of physical infrastructure. It enables operators to automatically manage and optimize physical resources to meet heterogeneous service requirements. Various approaches have been employed to address the security challenges in the NS environment, especially the utilization of Machine Learning (ML) that benefits from vast amounts of data. However, traditional ML models fail to adequately ensure the confidentiality and privacy of sensitive training data. In addition, training ML models can face performance issues since all data is trained in a single model. Furthermore, coordinating defensive capabilities across different slices can be highly challenging. To address these concerns, this paper proposes Intra-Slice Aggregated Defender (ISAD), a security approach based on Federated Learning (FL) within the intra-slice ecosystem. The purpose of the proposed model (ISAD) is to preserve data privacy during training, detect anomalies within intra-slice ecosystem, prevent attacks based on model certainty, and improve the performance of model training while evaluating the security risks associated with each threat.

network function virtualization (NFV) has gained significant attention as an important paradigm in the network service provisioning. In the NFV environment, network services are provided flexibly by deploying service function chains (SFCs) dynamically, which consist of multiple virtual network functions (VNFs) arranged in predefined order. In this paper, we formulate the dynamic SFC deployment optimization (DSDO) problem in the NFV-enabled offshore edge computing network, by jointly optimizing VNF deployment and routing to maximize the service acceptance rate. An SFC deployment scheme, named betweenness centrality and resource availability based dynamic SFC deployment (BR-DSD) scheme, is proposed to solve the optimization problem. The proposed BR-DSD scheme aims to allocate resources for SFCs by considering both network resources availability and network betweenness centrality. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed BR-DSD scheme outperforms baseline schemes in terms of service acceptance rate.

Software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) are promising technologies for demand services that require building flexible multicast transmission mechanisms with requirements for data processing functions at the network nodes. The multicast routing problem in NFVSDN networks seeks to compute multicast-routing trees and place virtual network functions (VNFs), satisfying the traffic demand with optimal resource use and fair data transmission. Since the problem is computationally complex with conflicting objective functions, this paper approaches multicast routing and VNF placement as a multiobjective optimization problem (MOP), minimizing the total resource cost and the maximum transmission delay variance. In this context, this study develops solutions based on Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs). Simulations performed on test instances show that the proposals are promissory by computing efficient and non-dominated solutions when compared to a state-of-the-art mono-objective approach.

Mission Critical Services (MCS) such as disaster management systems undisputably probe to top-level diverge capabilities, including the Indonesia Cable-Based Tsunameter System (INA-CBT). Conventionally, these types of groups of services demand dedicated architecture, resulting in high capital and operational expenses. However, balancing the costs while sustaining data performance is crucial, so it can be effective and efficient at the same time to accelerate alert notifications that save the lives of many. Responding to that, through this research, we demonstrate an infrastructure isolation strategy within the open-source Vector Packet Processing (VPP)-based softwarized 5G MCS architecture to slice Message Queueing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) prioritized sensor traffic. Our contribution is we exhibit our isolation effectively increases the performance of MQTT total data volume for more than 1000 messages inside an open-source virtualized User Plane *** the results, our isolation method successfully expands the data volume by an average of 1187.33 messages to the non-isolation one. The findings also suggest that our strategy is more effective for high-density data traffic compared to sparse traffic. In conclusion, our software-based 5G isolation strategy appears suitable promising solution for future advancements of the INA-CBT system, potentially reducing operational costs while answering the ultimate objective of increasing data availability.
