Considering standardized testing methodologies and related tool infrastructures as key elements of software quality assessment frameworks, for Clouds controlled by the Open Cloud Computing Interface OCCI this paper is going to present related first work based on the ETSI standardized test specification language TTCN-3. Initially motivated by studying the NIST Cloud Computing Program and the ETSI Cloud Standards Coordination (CSC) effort this approach is further stimulated by the recent evolution of the Cloud-oriented ETSI network functions virtualization (NFV) and related projects such as the German Industrie 4.0.

Software Defined networks (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) have been introduced in the telecommunications engineering as a new way to design, deploy and manage networking services. Working together, they are able to consolidate and deliver the networking components using standard IT virtualization technologies making, in such a way, carriers infrastructures more flexible and adaptive in respect to the needs of both end-users and service providers. In this context, this paper presents the architecture and the related prototype of a video broadcasting service tailored for SDNNVF enabled networks, allowing network and application functions deployment simplification and management cost reduction. In such a way, the proposed solution enables small/medium and unusual content providers to share events with a restricted number of interested users without the need of adopting a dedicated and expensive data delivery infrastructure. network functions virtualization (NFV) enhances the flexibility of network service provisioning and reduces the time to services deployment. NFV and SDN promises transform the carrier networks, introducing innovation in the network core. NFV moves packet processing from dedicated hardware middleboxes to Virtualized network functions (VNFs), which run on virtual machines hosted on commercial off-the-shelf servers. However, in NFV-enabled networks, the amount of data managed grows in a fast way. Based on this, the network operator must understand and manipulate a lot of information to effectively manage the network. In this paper, we introduce the VISION, a platform to help the network operator to determine the cause of problems based on visualizations techniques. Our platform implements a set of interactive and selective visualizations to assist in the NFV management. Finally, we conducted three cases studies to provide evidences of the feasibility of our platform.

Research on next-generation 5G wireless networks is currently attracting a lot of attention in both academia and industry. While 5G development and standardization activities are still at their early stage, it is widely acknowledged that 5G systems are going to extensively rely on dense small cell deployments, which would exploit infrastructure and network functions virtualization (NFV), and push the network intelligence towards network edges by embracing the concept of mobile edge computing (MEC). As security will be a fundamental enabling factor of small cell as a service (SCaaS) in 5G networks, we present the most prominent threats and vulnerabilities against a broad range of targets. As far as the related work is concerned, to the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to investigate security challenges at the intersection of SCaaS, NFV, and MEC. It is also the first paper that proposes a set of criteria to facilitate a clear and effective taxonomy of security challenges of main elements of 5G networks. Our analysis can serve as a staring point towards the development of appropriate 5G security solutions. These will have crucial effect on legal and regulatory frameworks as well as on decisions of businesses, governments, and end-users.

Virtual network functions (VNFs) are often realized using virtual machines (VMs) because they provide an isolated environment compatible with classical cloud computing technologies. However, VMs are demanding in terms of required resources (CPU and memory) and therefore not suitable for low-cost devices like residential gateways. Such equipment often runs a Linux-based operating system that includes by default a (large) number of common network functions, which can provide some of the services otherwise offered by simple VNFs, but with reduced overhead. In this paper those native software components are made available through a network Function virtualization (NFV) platform, thus making their use transparent from the VNF developer point of view.

network functions virtualization is a new technology for the future internet that eliminates the dependency of the network function and the hardware requirement. The network functions virtualization provides a successful approach for meeting the increase in demand of the end-to-end (E2E) services with low operational and capital costs. Replacing the network specific purpose hardware (e.g. firewall) with a software implementation of the network functions in which a chain of Virtualized network functions (VNFs) can logically connect the end points and provide the desired network services. However, this approach is associated with the challenge of dynamically mapping the predefined VNFs onto the existing substrate network in an optimal way. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective approach for mapping the VNFs with the physical resources in a dynamic service request environment. The algorithm considers the priority dependency between the VNFs as a case of study, with the objective of minimizing the mapping blocking rate.

As Cloud technologies mature increasingly, more businesses tend to migrate their services towards Infrastructure-as-a-Service platforms instead of dedicated data centers. Recently, even telecommunication providers consider moving their services to the Cloud despite the high demands regarding service quality. In order to deploy such critical services using mainstream Cloud management software, it must be hardened to deliver the required degree of availability and performance. In this paper we present a reliable deployment scheme for the Cloud software OpenStack with an IP Multimedia Subsystem on top simulating telecommunication services. We derived a top-down analysis approach to evaluate the deployed scheme in the context of typical carrier-grade service scenarios. Furthermore we identified the shortcomings of the system to fulfill the requirements of Virtualized network functions in terms of failure tolerance and recovery cost.

Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are mobile operators without their own infrastructure or government issued spectrum licenses. They purchase spectrum resources from primary mobile network operators (MNOs) to provide communication services under their own brands. MVNOs are expected to play an important role in mobile network markets, as this will increase the competition in retail markets and help to meet the demand of niche markets. However, with the rapidly increasing demand of mobile data traffic, efficient utilization of the limited spectrum resources owned by MVNOs has become an important issue. We propose here a resource sharing mechanism between MVNOs against the background of network functions virtualization (NFV). The proposed mechanism enables MVNOs to improve their quality of service (QoS) by sharing spectrum resources with each other. A nash bargaining solution based decision strategy is also devised to ensure the fairness of resource sharing. Extensive numerical evaluation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed models and mechanisms.

Relying too much on dedicated hardware equipment, resulting in poor flexibility and extensibility of existing communications network, while the new technology application cycle is long, seriously affect the communication operators' interest in deploying. In order to solve these problems, the new network architecturenetwork Function virtualization(NFV), was proposed. This paper introduces the basic principle and design framework of NFV, proposes a method of constructing virtual network based on NFV, namely achieving routing function in the form of software, deploying it to a virtual operating system, and running in the universal server virtualization software in the form of virtual machine, multiple virtual routers and virtual terminal system interconnection constitutes a virtual network, testing and analyzing the transmission performance of the virtual network, realizing to control the transmission performance of the virtual network, create a virtual network that have the transmission characteristics of real network environment to test new technologies.
