Efficient Orchestration Mechanisms for Congestion Mitigation in NFV: Models and Algorithms

network functions virtualization (NFV) has recently gained momentum among network operators as a means to share their physical infrastructure among virtual operators, which can independently compose and configure their communication services. However, the spatio-temporal correlation of traffic demands and computational loads can result in high congestion and low network performance for virtual operators, thus leading to service level agreement breaches. In this paper, we analyze the congestion resulting from the sharing of the physical infrastructure and propose innovative orchestration mechanisms based on both centralized and distributed approaches, aimed at unleashing the potential of the NFV technology. In particular, we first formulate the network functions composition problem as a non-linear optimization model to accurately capture the congestion of physical resources. To further simplify the network management, we also propose a dynamic pricing strategy of network resources, proving that the resulting system achieves a stable equilibrium in a completely distributed fashion, even when all virtual operators independently select their best network configuration. Numerical results show that the proposed approaches consistently reduce resource congestion. Furthermore, the distributed solution well approaches the performance that can be achieved using a centralized network orchestration system.

network slicing for 5G provides a network as a service (NaaS) for different use cases, allowing network operators to build multiple virtual networks on a shared infrastructure. With network slicing, service providers can deploy their applications and services flexibly and quickly to accommodate diverse services' specific requirements. As an emerging technology with a number of advantages, network slicing has raised many issues for the industry and academia alike. Here, the authors discuss this technology's background and propose a framework. They also discuss remaining challenges and future research directions.

This paper introduces the innovative Mobile Mist Computing ((MC)-C-2) concept by addressing a reference architectural model for vehicular networks capable of supporting complex mobile services with stringent time-space constraints. Cellular technology, thank to its coverage, data rates and latencies, is generally considered the key enabler to support real-time vehicular applications. Moreover, their integration with the emerging Fog Computing (FC) paradigm can reduce the of the core network, thus minimising the overall service delay. In this scenario, vehicular mobility represents the most relevant challenge to guarantee service continuity, while providing Quality of Service (QoS), especially when Fog Servers (FSs) have limited resources. To this purpose, FC has been firstly integrated with the Software Defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) concepts and, subsequently the dynamic replacement of vehicular services (ie, VNF migration) among FSs has been investigated to properly accommodate users mobility. Finally, an optimised strategy, called swapping migration, that can optimise both resources utilisation and outage rate, has been introduced. The proposed scheme has been validated by means of numerical simulations and compared with several benchmarks over realistic scenarios by pointing out latency and reliability as a function of the services request rate and the transmission capacity.

The 5G infrastructure initiative in Europe(1) has agreed a number of challenging key performance indicators (KPIs) to significantly enhance the user experience and support a number of use cases with very demanding requirements on the network infrastructure. At the same time there is high pressure on the reduction of the operational expenditure (OPEX). A contribution to meeting the KPIs and to reduce OPEX is to evolve the management of the network into a fully autonomic and intelligent framework. Based on advanced technologies, such as Software-Defined networking (SDN) and network Function virtualization (NFV), the EU H2020 project SELFNET (https://***/) is proposing an advanced network management framework to achieve these objectives.

Emerging Internet of Things (IoT) applications share the same characteristics of involving multiple processing components (i.e., function modules) and requiring a massive amount of data to be processed with low latency. To meet these needs, edge/fog computing has been proposed for next-generation mobile networks to migrate the computing from the cloud to the edge of the network. Thanks to the development of network functions virtualization (NFV), with which edge computing platform can virtualize function modules and deploy them on any edge devices to provide flexible services on the edge networks. However, such platform would need to deal with complicated function module calling relationship (i.e., call graph) of applications and user mobility, and both are not thoroughly considered by existing works of NFV and edge computing. In this paper, based on our previous idea of virtual local-hub (VLH), we propose a complete design of edge computing framework, which applies NFV technology on edge computing environment for IoT applications. To handle the complicated call graphs of IoT applications with better resource utilization, the VLH framework adapts the technologies of container-based virtualization and microservice architecture, which enables remote function module sharing on the edge computing environment. The framework includes the heuristic algorithm for function module allocation with the objective of minimizing total bandwidth consumption. We also present a design of protocols for system operations and mobility handling in the framework. Then we implement the framework on commodity hardware as a testbed. Via simulations under a large-scale environment with practical settings and experiments on the testbed under real-world scenarios, we demonstrate and verify the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed VLH framework for IoT application service provision.

Software defined networking and network functions virtualization enable network services to be provided more quickly and flexibly, and some network services are beginning to use these technologies. To create a new service with such technologies, this study treat virtual customer premises equipment (vCPE) that provides CPE functions as software on general-purpose servers. In this paper, a vCPE system is developed by using open source software (OSS) to reduce costs and provide flexibility for system deployment. Through this development, the issues with OSS-based systems are clarified and are considered how to cope with them. This paper also evaluated the practicality of OSS and performance of our OSS-based vCPE prototype system.

The promise of low costs, adaptation to customer load, and fast service roll-out has made cloud infrastructures a primary choice for many service providers. So far, this has been largely for end-user and enterprise services. Recently, the cloud paradigm is being considered by service providers of critical infrastructures. A prominent example of this is ETSI's Industry Specification Group (ISG) on network Function virtualization, which provides guidelines on how to move telecommunications services to the cloud. But other critical infrastructure providers are following closely. Common characteristics of critical infrastructure services, such as network functions, are their high requirements for service dependability and security. In this paper, we present a risk assessment method for assessing the risks of moving critical infrastructure services to the cloud. To achieve this, we have extended a well-established information security risk assessment process and developed an extensive cloud-specific fault and challenge catalogue.

network functions virtualization (NFVs) and Information-Centric networking (ICN) are promising networking paradigms for the future of the Internet. In addition, microservice architecture offers an attractive alternative to monolithic architecture for developing applications. Employing ICN NFVs implemented as microservices enables the use of ICN in generic devices with the ability to scale on demand to address specific application requirements. However, working in this context is challenging due to the complexity of managing and coordinating microservices at runtime, especially for a cluster of nodes. This paper proposes Micro-Chain, an architecture for deploying, scaling, and chaining ICN microservices. The architecture consists of five modules and their interrelationships. The basic operations of the proposed architecture were validated in a scalability scenario within a node cluster, where CPU and memory thresholds were utilized as parameters for scaling decisions. The performed experiment revealed a microservices placement issue that resulted in lower throughput.

The paper discusses how Software Defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) techniques can support survivability of military networks, both on the strategic / operational and tactical levels. In the introduction the term survivability has been described. Then the attention is paid to the possibilities of supporting the following situations: mobility of users (individual soldiers), network segments (entire military units at low levels of command), service mobility and recovery from the destruction of key network components. These article describes both the possibilities associated with the use of technologies widely adapted in the civil market and the challenges of using the technology in specific military applications.

This work presents algorithms to extend tenant Virtualized network functions Forwarding Graphs (VNF-FG) to embed new networking functions and introduce gradually additional services into the already deployed tenant dedicated slices. The related service graph extension problem is addressed through an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) algorithm that serves as a reference for performance comparisons with a proposed heuristic algorithm. An eigendecomposition approach is proposed, evaluated and compared.
