Programmable data plane technologies enable the systematic reconfiguration of the low-level processing steps applied to network packets and are key drivers toward realizing the next generation of network services and applications. This survey presents recent trends and issues in the design and implementation of programmable network devices, focusing on prominent abstractions, architectures, algorithms, and applications proposed, debated, and realized over the past years. We elaborate on the trends that led to the emergence of this technology and highlight the most important pointers fromthe literature, casting different taxonomies for the field, and identifying avenues for future research.

Future networks (5G and beyond) will demand provisioning of novel services with a varied range of service requirements, and an order of magnitude increase of wireless data traffic, while at the same time decreasing the network operation cost. To address these issues, wireless network virtualization is seen as a key enabling technology for future networks. Virtualization offers cost-effective and efficient resource utilization by sharing the resources among multiple operators. Also, in contrast to traditional service specific inflexible network implementations, adoption of innovative network technologies demand certain level of flexibility and control over the networking fabric. In this respect, we argue that, for realizing a programmable and flexible heterogeneous virtual network infrastructure, software defined networking (SDN) & cloud computing technologies are the key tools to leverage on. This will ensure efficient resource utilization through sharing, enable programming of the underlying heterogeneous network infrastructure as a system and provide on-demand, elastic resource provisioning. In this paper, we lay out the key requirements and architectural components of end-to-end programmable heterogeneous virtual wireless networks (HVWNs). To report on the advances made in the pertinent technologies in realizing a HVWN architecture, we also present a brief survey of research on wireless network that leverage SDN, programmable radio plane and cloud computing technologies. We also investigate various actors and their roles in such HVWN environment and address various research issues and challenges in realizing such an architecture. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. network slicing enables multiple virtual networks to share physical resources, allowing network operators to deliver highly customizable and efficient networking solutions that meet the diverse requirements of modern applications. The automated management of network slices has been studied in the last years to make such solutions more flexible, ready to support new applications, and capable of optimizing network resource utilization. Many works in the literature give a topdown approach, focusing on the high-level decision processes, and relying on abstracted infrastructure managers and simulation tools to apply/execute such decisions. In this work, we leverage components that we previously developed for network monitoring, flexible traffic shaping, and Software-Defined TimeSensitive networking control, to create a bottom-up approach toward automated slice management. We describe the intricate coordination of elements required for an automated control loop and present the results achieved with a proof-of-concept executed in a real testbed of wired and Wi-Fi nodes. The results show the capability of the system to correctly identify the bottleneck of a flow and apply corrective actions to reestablish its intended performance level.

Today's network architectures are not able to cope with the Future Internet requirements, as they are too inefficient, power hungry, and ossified on the TCP/IP paradigm. In order to promote a viable evolution towards new protocols and paradigms, modern network routers should become programmable to allow a flexible management of both traffic flows and power states. In this respect, Software Defined networking (SDN) can represent the perfect support for the allocation of traffic flows and, at the same time, the management of the power states of the single nodes. To this purpose, this paper proposes to use the Green Abstraction Layer (GAL) to integrate the exchange of power management data among network elements and the application of control strategies inside the SDN paradigm. Moreover, in order to clarify how our study would help overcoming scalability issues and promote energy efficiency at the same time, this paper defines and solves a consolidation problem where the network is described in terms of allocation of packet handling resources and power states.

network Exposure Function (NEF) enables third-party application providers utilize the network capabilities and services that the 5G System offers. The 3(rd) Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) provides open standardized Application programming Interfaces (API) through NEF;however, a big gap appears in the market between mobile operators and service providers since no commercial solutions are available. In this context, the NEF's standardized APIs offered by 3GPP are examined. As a result of this analysis an open-source simulator "NEFSim" is presented. NEFSim realizes the aspects of the NEF and enables application developers to experiment with the northbound APIs under a simulated, configurable environment.

Virtualization and softwarization are key concepts in fifth generation (5G) system design. 5G core network adopts service-oriented architecture which provides agile and flexible platform for diverse use cases. The paper presents an approach to design Radio Access network (RAN) control plane functions as micro services. The approach improves the interoperability as core network service can interact with RAN services in uniform way The focus is on User Equipment Context Management procedures which are defined as a RESTful service.

The notion of programming the forwarding device using an open protocol is a key feature of Software-defined networks (SDN). This improves network visibility and control thereby reducing vendor dependency. OpenFlow protocol provides a standardized approach to realize these goals of SDN. In this paper, we illustrate our progress with a Software-defined Cloud-Gateway automation system using OpenFlow. In addition, based on our deployment experience, we highlight two technical challenges when using OpenFlow. First, with the standardization being an evolving effort, we highlight some of the programming challenges and missing features within the OpenFlow protocol. Secondly, existing Open Flow-based network stack lacks some architectural components that reduces the level of flexibility we achieve when programming the network. Most SDN controllers expose limited abstractions to build network applications thereby primarily functioning as an OpenFlow driver. This imposes an application programmer to work with several OpenFlow primitives. To address this problem, we elaborate our current work in extending the SDN stack to improve our overall network programmability experience.

In-band network Telemetry (INT) is a novel network monitoring mechanism that improves fine-grained network visibility. Despite the increasing research efforts towards the orchestration of INT data acquisition, little has yet been done to efficiently collect telemetry data from the network considering monitoring applications requirements. In this paper, we introduce DyPro - a dynamic probing planning for INT. In particular, DyPro ensures that telemetry dependencies are always satisfied by monitoring application requirements. We theoretically formalize it as a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) optimization model and propose a heuristic procedure to efficiently solve it. Results show that DyPro can outperform state-of-the-art solutions by up to 5x regarding the percentage of monitoring applications satisfied.

network resource virtualization and dynamic service configuration are key functionalities in future Internet scenarios and can take advantage of the network programmability paradigm. As a key system thought for next -generation networks, a programmable router is a modular node to support this context. It relies on high-performance optical switching fabric and modular software organization, to seamlessly meet the dynamic requirements of emerging and future applications. In this chapter, the security aspects arising when customers and service providers access node and service programmability are discussed. Secure service support based on control and forwarding element separation is proposed and tested in a software router context to show the feasibility and the effectiveness of the approach.
