Software-defined networking (SDN) and Programming Protocol-Independent Packet Processors (P4) introduced data processing within the network data plane. To offer multiple tenants to deploy individual code in programmable switches and network devices, code updates must ensure proper tenant isolation and minimal negative cross-tenant impact during code updates. Thus, this paper presents a code deployment pipeline, primarily implements an orchestrator allowing network device discovery, code verification, compilation and low impact deployment on multi-tenant programmable switches. Critical time windows and their durations for the code update are evaluated using hardware switches (Intel Tofino). Performance impacts of code updates on tenants using these switches are evaluated and discussed based on bandwidth tests considering different code deployment options. The architecture proposes a framework to enable seamless updates with minimal to no service interruptions, e.g., using gradual code updates of redundant links between programmable switches in data centers, internet service providers, and mobile networks used by various customers as tenants. Besides P4, common Kubernetes and continuous delivery solutions were used for the presented implementation that is offered as Open Source for further adaption and development.

Upcoming AI-based and SG applications are demanding new network management approaches that are capable to cope with unprecedented levels of flexibility, scalability and energy efficiency. In order to make these use cases tangible and feasible, network management solutions aim to rely on multi-domain, multi-tier architectures that permit complex end-to-end orchestration of network resources. However, current research on scheduling functions and task-offloading algorithms often focus on one single-domain, and the exploration of large-scale inter-operable solutions becomes a challenge. Fortunately for the networking research community, a number of available testing facilities deployed at different geographical location along the world can be integrated to be used as a single joint multi-domain infrastructure. In this demo paper, we present a hands-off experience of how to integrate different high-performance testbeds, located in USA, Belgium and The Netherlands, in order to enable multi-domain large-scale experimentation. We demonstrate end-to-end performance characteristics of the testbed integration and we describe the main takeaways and lessons learned to drive researchers towards successful deployments in such end-to-end global infrastructure.

network Function Virtualization (NFV) has raised tremendous attention in the academic and industrial communities alike. The former have been attracted by the service centric orchestration challenges. The latter have found that, by decoupling network functions from the underling hardware, significant savings can be obtained by means of infrastructure homogenization and service automation. As opposed to the initial NFV solutions, which heavily relied on a centralized cloud model, the emerging Multi-access Edge Computing trend is calling for a distribution of computational capacity at the customers' sites. This change of paradigm could result in the deployment of tens of thousands or even millions of Points-of-Presence. In this article we discuss the fundamental challenges of deploying NFV in scattered environments, then we introduce the Light-MANO framework, a Multi-access network Operating System converging SDN and NFV into a single lightweight platform for management and orchestration of network services over distributed NFV infrastructure. Finally, we report on a proof-of-concept implementation of LightMANO and on its evaluation.

This paper introduces the MIBlet concept as a means for effectively designing and managing Virtual networks (VNs). MIBlets are logical structures providing abstract and selective views of the physical network resources allocated to VN customers. They result from the partitioning of the network resources (their MIB representations) and restrict customers' access only to those resources allocated to them. Different partitioning schemes are supported to provide virtual network services with different quality of service requirements. Customer control/management functions are implemented through MIBlet controllers located at every network node involved in the customer network. MIBlet controllers enforce customers' access control and resource usage policing strategies and are invoked to set up, monitor and control the customer connections. Ln this paper the partitioning of network resources into MIBlets is mainly addressed in the scope of the ATM testbed as a part of the network Resources Management (NRM) Project of the network Architecture Laboratory at University of Toronto.

Current trends on 5G network programmability evidence the need for end-to-end flexibility from the node and edge all the way to the cloud. Such multi-domain scenarios require realistic testbeds where different task-offloading algorithms, scheduling functions, and service orchestration techniques can be deployed and tested. While many of these research components can be often explored locally in small and isolated testbeds, new 5G demands are requesting for inter-operable platforms with a wider and a more global scope. The goal for these global platforms is that they can cope with multi-tier hierarchical architectures that are capable to face intense computational processes and heavy network traffic loads, while preserving dependability and keeping a low latency on the task executions and data transmission. In this paper we demonstrate a world-wide attempt to integrate different high-performance testing facilities, located in USA, Belgium, and The Netherlands, to enable experimentation on top of such large and complex architectures. In order to do this, we describe and deploy a multi-domain use case that can benefit from a global hierarchical infrastructure. Finally, we detail the performance characteristics of the deployment, discussing the experiences and technical challenges, and presenting the lessons learned we obtained when building and testing such experimental use case.

network-based malware has posed serious threats to the security of host machines. When malware adopts a private TCP/1P stack for communications, personal and network firewalls may fail to identify the malicious traffic. Current firewall policies do not have a convenient update mechanism, which makes the malicious traffic detection difficult. In this paper, we propose Software-Defined Firewall (SDF), a new security design to protect host machines and enable programmable security policy control by abstracting the firewall architecture into control and data planes. The control plane strengthens the easy security control policy update, as in the SDN (Software Definednetworking) architecture. The difference is that it further collects host information to provide application-level traffic control and improve the malicious traffic detection accuracy. The data plane accommodates all incoming/outgoing network traffic in a network hardware to avoid malware bypassing it. The design of SDF is easy to be implemented and deployed in today's network. We implerrrent a prototype of SDF and evaluate its performance in real-world experiments. Experimental results show that SDF can successfully monitor all network traffic (i.e., no traffic bypassing) and improves the accuracy of malicious traffic identification. Two examples of use cases indicate that SDF provides easier and more flexible solutions to today's host security problems than current firewalls.

In order to support heterogeneous services, using the information generated by a huge number of communicating devices, the Future Internet should be more energy-efficient, scalable and flexible than today's networking platforms, and it should allow a tighter integration among heterogeneous network segments (fixed, cellular wireless, and satellite). Flexibility and in-network programmability brought forth by Software Defined networking (SDN) and network Functions Virtualization (NFV) appear to be promising tools for this evolution, together with architectural choices and techniques aimed at improving the network energy efficiency (Green networking). As a result, optimal dynamic resource allocation strategies should be readily available to support the current workload generated by applications at the required Quality of Service/Quality of Experience (QoS/QoE) levels, with minimum energy expenditure. In this framework, we briefly explore the above-mentioned paradigms, and describe their potential application in a couple of satellite networking related use cases, regarding traffic routing and gateway selection, and satellite swarms, respectively.

The concept of SDN (Software-Defined networking) originally came with the purpose of disaggregating control plane and data plane. However, current scope of SDN has surpassed the original goal. It sets out to introduce programmability in the control plane for better visibility and manageability of networking devices. The idea has been recently extended to program the data plane. In the present scenario P4 (Programming Protocol-Independent Packet Processors) stands as the de-facto language to program the data plane. In this study, we implemented an L2 (Layer 2) switch and evaluated it performance using P4 programming language. The performance of the switch was evaluated in terms of throughput (Mbps) and latency (ms). The throughput was found to be nominal as the switch was implemented in software and the latency for first packet was also high since the switch's table was empty. However, once the table was filled, subsequent packets suffered very low latency.

In recent years, programmable devices delivering accelerated hardware-assisted network functions became more prevalent, esp. in data center and service provider networks. While these devices allow for greater flexibility, they are also more expensive and therefore pay off for providers when used by several tenants. However, code updates rolled out by a tenant negatively affect other customers' on the same hardware due to short interruptions during the update. To overcome these deficiencies, we extended our previously published orchestrator for multi-tenant code updates to be aware of multiple devices and surrounding network context. The new implementation allows seamless and gradual multi-tenant code updates, e.g., in service provider or data center networks including tests to minimize negative cross-tenant interference caused by the code updates.

The network programming model of the Segment Routing (SRv6) architecture offers the possibility to define new functions aiming at improving the network performance. In this paper we introduce SRV6 LIVE-LIVE, a new behavior for the SRv6 data plane. SRV6 LIVE-LIVE is based on two primitives: i) traffic duplication, performed at the ingress node, and ii) the traffic de-duplication, executed at the egress node. The proposed behavior is suitable for the service provisioning of traffic flows having stringent requirements in terms of reliability, low delay and high throughput. Our preliminary performance evaluation, conducted in an emulated environment and realized by using a prototype implementation based on P4, shows that SRV6 LIVE-LIVE enhances the performance of the selected traffic flows in challenging network scenarios, characterized by high level of packet corruption/loss and large values of bandwidth-delay products.
