Since Software-Defined networking (SDN) emerged, the research community and industry have developed numerous projects and fostered novel use cases. However, engineers now need to learn how to program the control and data planes, which might slow down technology acceptance. To accelerate it, visual programming abstractions facilitate the incorporation of SDN technologies and assist in creating new applications. So far, very little effort has been made in this field. This letter presents an early-stage SDN visual abstraction initiative based on the Scratch/Blockly programming framework, initially aimed at kids. The objective is to illustrate how this work could be extended to provide value-added resources for network programming.

Software-defined networking (SDN) is receiving considerable attention in the Broadcast and Media industry due to its potential to bring innovation to Internet Protocol (IP) and networking approaches. This is especially relevant and timely due to the pervasiveness of IP and Ethernet as the converged medium for carrying multiple services (video, audio, data, etc.) — This paper will outline the SDN concept as it relates to Media IP workflows and broadband delivery of content. The paper will define network programmability and network application programming interfaces (APIs) and their role in achieving more granular control of network services, network analytics, and security. Finally, SDN use cases for Media IP workflows and the business benefits will be highlighted.

IRATI is a open source implementation of RINA for OS/Linux systems that allows researchers and innovators to experiment with RINA networks. RINA is a new Internetwork architecture that supports without the need of extra mechanisms mobility, mull-homing and Quality of Service, provides a secure and configurable environment and allows for a seamless adoption. IRATI implements the core RINA protocols and multiple policies to customize such protocols to different environments. Policies can be developed via a Software Development Kit (SDK). IRATI provides an API for applications to natively use RINA IPC services, as well as multiple monitoring utilities and example applications.
