The Quantum Internet architecture and its associated functionality are far from being standardized. Furthermore, the protocol stack that implements the abovementioned functionality is still under development. In this work, we present a framework to DEsign and Synthesize Quantum network InteroperaBle protocols for Entanglement distribution (DeSQribe), a novel iteration of the Software-Defined networking (SDN) paradigm. DeSQribe introduces a methodology to define and implement arbitrary entanglement distribution and distillation protocols. Distinct from adaptations of existing SDN solutions to quantum networks, DeSQribe tackles quantum-specific challenges, such as the dual nature of a data plane that accommodates classical messages and quantum states. DeSQribe defines a protocol as an ordered sequence of processing units that manipulate quantum states and exchange classical messages. This high modularity encourages software reusability. A centralized controller leverages DeSQribe and dynamically orchestrates protocols on network devices. Finally, DeSQribe's technology-agnostic nature assures seamless integration across diverse quantum technologies. We showcase how to implement and combine entanglement distribution protocols of very different natures (e.g., connectionless, connection-oriented) with DeSQribe, proving its flexibility and timeliness.

Faced to the diversity of the public in using clouds, computer scientists should take care to usages and facilitate access to non-experts i.e. to hiding internal artifacts and complexity of such distributed systems. At the opposite, the cloud provider wants to optimize resource usage, for instance for billing or to keep the cloud as green as possible. These two conflicting objectives are addressed in this paper. We combine a smart view for specifying the Service Level Agreements (SLA) of a user with a strategy of placing the user's jobs, which represents the cloud provider's point of view. We put in place a multi-criteria approach and the experimental results demonstrate the potential of our approach under a different scenario.

Existing SDN controllers commonly adopt an event-driven model that minimizes southbound communication and control-plane overhead. This model satisfies most existing SDN applications' goals to maximize data plane performance while still being able to programmatically control with a decent level of visibility. However, as network composition becomes more heterogeneous with NFV and IoT, such model can be insufficient for future applications that rely more on data analysis and intelligent decision making. In this paper, we present our findings in a case study on smart manufacturing systems, which have highly heterogeneous device compositions, and applications that are much less "throughput" hungry or "latency" sensitive than network applications but require a lot more data for (real-time) decision making. We share the insights we gain that help us design a new Application and Data-Driven (ADD) model for SDN controllers. We build a proof-of-concept ADD controller based on this model and develop two applications to showcase its new capabilities. Evaluation results show that ADD delivers satisfying scalability and performance. More importantly, applications enabled by ADD gain more insights of the data plane and can make better decisions faster.
