Short message noisy network coding (SNNC) differs from long message noisy network coding (LNNC) in that one transmits many short messages in blocks rather than using one long message with repetitive encoding. Two properties of SNNC are developed. First, SNNC with backward decoding achieves the same rates as SNNC with offset encoding and sliding window decoding for memoryless networks where each node transmits a multicast message. The rates are the same as LNNC with joint decoding. Second, SNNC enables early decoding if the channel quality happens to be good. This leads to mixed strategies that unify the advantages of decode-forward and noisy network coding.

Wireless multihop networks are increasingly used because of their low cost and easy deployment. However, there are still many restrictions that degrade performance. network coding has been proposed to improve the throughput of a wireless network through the characteristics of overhearing and broadcast. In this paper, we model the network utility maximization problem using a combined intrasession and intersession network coding method to improve the network utility in multiradio, multichannel, and multirate wireless network. And we propose a network throughput optimization scheme with a rate control, resource allocation and congestion control algorithm. We formulate an optimal framework reflecting wireless network environment. Also, we propose a rate selection scheme to choose the transmission rate on each node. We evaluate the proposed algorithms by simulation. The performance evaluation results show that the proposed scheme can improve throughput for network by utility optimization in a multiradio, multichannel, and multirate wireless network.

In this paper, the authors study a half-duplex two-way relay channel with correlated sources exchanging bidirectional information. In the case, when both sources have the knowledge of correlation statistics, a source compression with physical-layer network coding scheme is proposed to perform the distributed compression at each source node. When only the relay has the knowledge of correlation statistics, the authors propose a relay compression with physical-layer network coding scheme to compress the bidirectional messages at the relay. The closed-form block error rate expressions of both schemes are derived and verified through simulations. It is shown that the proposed schemes achieve considerable improvements in both error performance and throughput compared with the conventional non-compression scheme in correlated two-way relay networks.

The huge increase in broadband service requires much more bandwidth than ever before;however, due to the cost sensitivity, it is not possible to pursue high transmission rate blindly in the access network, which requires us to consider how to improve network efficiency. In this paper, a software-defined passive optical network architecture with network coding (NC) is proposed to reduce downstream bandwidth consumption and thus increases the throughput and network efficiency. To flexibly implement the coding operation on local peer traffic, the NC pair management scheme is provided and keeps the compatibility with the current multi-point control protocol (MPCP) in a single optical line terminal (OLT). Considering the trends in OLT pooling and the requirement of smooth network upgrade, software-defined networking (SDN) techniques are applied in the NC-based passive optical networks. Through re-arranging the affiliations between the OLTs and optical network units (ONUs), the local traffic between peer ONUs will be led from non-NC-supported OLTs to NC-supported OLTs, and then the downstream efficiency will be still quite high even in a hybrid OLT pool. The experiments and evaluation results show that, the software-defined passive optical networks with NC reduce nearly 50 % occupied downstream bandwidth, when there is local traffic between peer ONUs, even in a hybrid OLT pool.

Reliability and efficiency become more important in data transmission application in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Many studies have been proposed to improve the network reliability and energy efficiency, but most of them were complicated to implement in energy-limited WSNs. This paper is dedicated to research a high performance protocol named NCCM-DC, which is a network coding based Cluster-level Multipath protocol in Duty-Cycled WSNs. While meeting the transmission reliability, NCCM-DC can also balance the workload and make full use of energy. In NCCM-DC protocol, the nodes are organized into a cluster and the cluster is used as a basic unit to construct the multipath. Thus, the traffic load can be dispersed to more nodes evenly and a topological structure for cooperative transmission can be formed. Meanwhile, with the advantage of path redundancy and network coding, NCCM-DC improves the transmission reliability. In order to improve the energy efficiency, we focus on the dormancy mechanism and collaborative state transition algorithm. As the low cost in routing discovery phase and the random operations of coding coefficient in Galois Field, NCCM-DC is applicable to energy-limited WSNs. Theoretical analysis and experimental simulation confirms that NCCM-DC can meet the requirements of network reliability and energy efficiency. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Efficient heterogeneous communication technologies are critical components to provide flawless connectivity in smart cities. The proliferation of wireless technologies, services and communication devices has created the need for green and spectrally efficient communication technologies. Physical-layer network coding (PNC) is now well-known as a potential candidate for delay-sensitive and spectrally efficient communication applications, especially in bidirectional relaying, and is therefore well-suited for smart city applications. In this paper, we provide a brief introduction to PNC and the associated distance shortening phenomenon which occurs at the relay. We discuss the issues with existing schemes that mitigate the deleterious effect of distance shortening, and we propose simple and effective solutions based on the use of multiple antenna systems. Simulation results confirm that full diversity order can be achieved in a PNC system by using antenna selection schemes based on the Euclidean distance metric.

This paper reveals an intrinsic relationship between secure cloud storage and secure network coding for the first time. Secure cloud storage was proposed only recently while secure network coding has been studied for more than ten years. Although the two areas are quite different in their nature and are studied independently, we show how to construct a secure cloud storage protocol given any secure network coding protocol. This gives rise to a systematic way to construct secure cloud storage protocols. Our construction is secure under a definition which captures the real world usage of the cloud storage. Furthermore, we propose two specific secure cloud storage protocols based on two recent secure network coding protocols. In particular, we obtain the first publicly verifiable secure cloud storage protocol in the standard model. We also enhance the proposed generic construction to support user anonymity and third-party public auditing, which both have received considerable attention recently. Finally, we prototype the newly proposed protocol and evaluate its performance. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the protocol.
