How to effectively distribute and share increasingly large volumes of data in large-scale network applications is a key challenge for Internet infrastructure. Although NDN, a promising new future internet architecture which takes data-oriented transfer approaches, aims to better solve such needs than IP, it still faces problems like data redundancy transmission and inefficient in-network cache utilization. This paper combines network coding techniques to NDN to improve network throughput and efficiency. The merit of our design is that it is able to avoid duplicate and unproductive data delivery while transferring disjoint data segments along multiple paths and with no excess modification to NDN fundamentals. To quantify performance benefits of applying network coding in NDN, we integrate network coding into an NDN streaming media system implemented in the ndnSIM simulator. Basing on BRITE generated network topologies in our simulation, the experimental results clearly and fairly demonstrate that considering network coding in NDN can significantly improve the performance, reliability and QoS. More importantly, our approach is capable of and well fit for delivering growing Big Data applications including high-performance and high-density video streaming services.

Cooperation among mobile devices and utilizing multiple interfaces such as cellular and local area links simultaneously are promising to meet the increasing throughput demand over cellular links. In particular, when mobile devices are in the close proximity of each other and are interested in the same content, device-to-device connections such as WiFi-Direct, in addition to cellular links, can be utilized to construct a cooperative system. However, it is crucial to understand the potential of network coding for cooperating mobile devices with multiple interfaces. In this paper, we consider this problem, and (i) develop network coding schemes for cooperative mobile devices with multiple interfaces, and (ii) characterize the performance of network coding by using the number of transmissions to recover all packets as a performance metric.

User-specific link adaptation scheme for device-to-device network coding multicast

User-specific network controlled device-to-device (D2D) communication is a promising method to improve the system performance of the future cellular networks. It is a challenging task to realise the optimal link adaptation for D2D reliable multicast because of the nature of wireless radio channels. In this study, network coding is employed to enhance D2D multicast by introducing the characteristic that different information network-coded into a single multicast packet is destined to different receivers. A user-specific bit mapping algorithm is then proposed to make different information having a different equivalent coding rate before network-coded. A corresponding user-specific link adaptation scheme is proposed to adaptively choose an optimal modulation and coding scheme (MCS) for D2D multicast. Furthermore, the receiver detection procedure is then derived to recover the expected information for different users. As a result, different users obtain their respective information from a single network-coded multicast packet with different equivalent MCS according to the respective channel quality from the transmitter to them. Numerical results show that the user-specific link adaptation scheme can improve the capacity performance of network controlled D2D multicast. The throughput gain varies from 13 to 45% in different channel quality scenarios.

The concept of network coding has greatly evolved since its inception. Theoretical and achievable performance have been obtained for a wide variety of networking assumptions and performance objectives. Even if powerful, such a broad applicability poses a challenge to a unified design approach over different communication networks and systems. In this work, we propose a (non-reductionist) unified network coding design architectural framework where an ontology of abstraction domains is introduced rather than layer/system/network-specific assumptions and designs. The framework brings together network and system design and seems compatible with upcoming (more general) design frameworks such as software-defined networking, cognitive networking or network virtualization. We illustrate its applicability showing the case of network coding design over DVB-S2X/RCS.

A network coding scheme employing nonbinary low density parity check (LDPC) product code with signal space diversity (SSD) is proposed in this paper. The scheme is based on a multiple access relay channel with two users, one relay and one base station. Rotated modulation and component interleaving are introduced in this scheme to realize SSD so that it can enhance the bit error rate (BER) performance for the scheme. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the conventional binary scheme by 1.9dB in Rayleigh fading channel. Moreover, it also proves that the rotated modulation and component interleaving play an important role in improving the BER performance of the nonbinary LDPC product code.

This paper proposes an underwater environment acoustic signal detection scheme employing dual-loop adaptive noise canceling (ANC) based on analog network coding. For example, the proposed scheme can detect underwater environment acoustic signals in the presence of underwater acoustic communications (UWAC), where the UWAC communicate their information at the same frequency band in order to save frequency resources. The first loop of the proposed scheme adaptively cancels the transmitted signals of the UWAC based on analog network coding. The second loop of the proposed scheme adaptively cancels the received signals of the UWAC by means of the inverse modulated signals of the decisions for the received signals. Finally, computer simulation results confirm that the proposed dual-loop scheme outputs the detected signals of the underwater environment acoustic signals at high signal to noise power ratio (SNR).

Wireless mesh networks are widely applied in many fields such as industrial controlling, environmental monitoring, and military operations. network coding is promising technology that can improve the performance of wireless mesh networks. In particular, network coding is suitable for wireless mesh networks as the fixed backbone of wireless mesh is usually unlimited energy. However, coding collision is a severe problem affecting network performance. To avoid this, routing should be effectively designed with an optimum combination of coding opportunity and coding validity. In this paper, we propose a Connected Dominating Set (CDS)-based and Flow-oriented coding-aware Routing (CFCR) mechanism to actively increase potential coding opportunities. Our work provides two major contributions. First, it effectively deals with the coding collision problem of flows by introducing the information conformation process, which effectively decreases the failure rate of decoding. Secondly, our routing process considers the benefit of CDS and flow coding simultaneously. Through formalized analysis of the routing parameters, CFCR can choose optimized routing with reliable transmission and small cost. Our evaluation shows CFCR has a lower packet loss ratio and higher throughput than existing methods, such as Adaptive Control of Packet Overhead in XOR network coding (ACPO), or Distributed coding-Aware Routing (DCAR).

Satellite networks are expected to support multimedia traffic flows, offering high capacity with QoS guarantees. However, system efficiency is often impaired by packet losses due to erasure channel effects. Reconfigurable and adaptive air interfaces are possible solutions to alleviate some of these issues. On the other hand, network coding is a promising technique to improve satellite network performance. This position paper reports on potential applications of network coding to satellite networks. Surveys and preliminary numerical results are provided on network coding applications to different exemplary satellite scenarios. Specifically, the adoption of Random Linear network coding (RLNC) is considered in three cases, namely, multicast transmissions, handover for multihomed aircraft mobile terminals, and multipath TCP-based applications. OSI layers on which the implementation of networking coding would potentially yield benefits are also recommended.

Energy and throughput optimization occupies an important place in the research area of Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs). These networks are a class of useful but challenging networks. Combining network coding (NC) and efficient scheduling in the MAC layer of such networks gives more efficiency and copes with the problem of energy waste and inefficiency management as well as transmission's lose and collision. Our work's concern is to assess the contribution of the network coding technique's introduction to improve the efficiency and optimize the energy consumption in the MAC layer of IR-UWB based WSNs. Therefore, we tested this new technique using WideMac Protocol;which is a relevant MAC protocols dedicated to WSNs based on IR-UWB. Furthermore, we used XOR coding to fit low computational capabilities requirement in such networks. The obtained results are very encouraging and the proposed MAC scheme's improvements have demonstrated the positive impact of using NC in terms of both used metrics.

In this paper we introduce a network coding aware Medium Access Control (necoMAC) scheme that incorporates many protocols such as NCA-2PSP, 2PSP and NCA-CSMA in order to provide data transmission in higher rates with fewer number of transmissions for multirate wireless networks. We create two golden topologies called golden chain and golden triangle, and calculate their energy consumption, overhead ratio, throughput and fairness for each protocol. We also set up a simulation to further analyze the performance of these protocols with the increasing number of nodes and flows. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides higher through-put and less energy consumption compared to the conventional CSMA/CA.
