This paper presents NANCY, a system that generates adaptive bit rates (ABR) for video and adaptive network coding rates (ANCR) using reinforcement learning (RL) for video distribution over wireless networks. NANCY trains a neural network model with rewards formulated as quality of experience (QoE) metrics. It performs joint optimization in order to select: (i) adaptive bit rates for future video chunks to counter variations in available bandwidth and (ii) adaptive network coding rates to encode the video chunk slices to counter packet losses in wireless networks. We present the design and implementation of NANCY, and evaluate its performance compared to state-of-the-art video rate adaptation algorithms including Pensieve and robustMPC. Our results show that NANCY provides 29.91% and 60.34% higher average QoE than Pensieve and robustMPC, respectively.

Reliable communication over the wireless network with high throughput is a major target for the next generation communication technologies. network coding can significantly improve the throughput efficiency of the network in a cooperative environment. The small cell technology and device to device communication make network coding an ideal candidate for improved performance in the fifth generation of communication networks. However, the security concerns associated with network coding needs to be addressed before any practical implementations. Pollution attacks are considered one of the most threatening attacks in the network coding environment. Although there are different integrity schemes to detect polluted packets, identifying the exact adversary in a network coding environment is a less addressed challenge. This paper proposes a scheme for identifying and locating adversaries in a dense, network coding enabled environment of mobile nodes. It also discusses a non-repudiation protocol that will prevent adversaries from deceiving the network.

In this work, novel metaheuristic algorithms are proposed to address the network coding (NC)-based routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) problem in elastic optical networks, aiming to increase the level of security against eavesdropping attacks for the network's confidential connections. A modified simulated annealing, a genetic algorithm, as well as a combination of the two techniques are examined in terms of confidentiality and spectrum utilization Performance results demonstrate that using metaheuristic techniques can improve the performance of NC-based RSA algorithms and thus can be utilized in real-world network scenarios.

Compressed sensing and network coding techniques have seen a widespread interest in many disciplines during the last decade. Recently, a novel idea emerged for the combination of these areas in wireless communications to leverage the benefits from network coding while taking advantage of the correlations in the (sensory) data. The potential gains, such as lower latency for large-scale sensing scenarios, reduced energy consumption, and a decrease in the amount of data during transmissions, are alluring to many use-cases. However, a common issue one faces when joining both techniques is encountered in the fact that network coding is designed to operate over finite fields, whereas compressed sensing is mainly concerned with real numbers. This paper studies the impact of compressed sensing on network coding to enable one step decoding for the reconstruction of compressed data. We emphasize and discuss the design of the sensing and coding matrices, as well as the algorithms that enable accurate reconstructions. We employ the KL1p compressed sensing library and the NS3 simulator to evaluate this joint design. Our simulations show that using normalized coefficient matrices drawn from Gaussian distributions has higher efficiency and scalability including, but not limited to, multi-hop networks, where the recoding feature of network coding can be exploited. Furthermore, the Subspace Pursuit algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art reconstruction algorithms, with respect to the reconstruction signal-to-noise ratio, by more than two folds compared to the other benchmark algorithms in cluster-based Wireless Sensor networks, where recoding using real network codes are involved.

Sharing content, such as video, with others via personal mobile devices has become more and more popular. However, it tends to incur extremely high traffic fee to share large files in commercial networks. In this paper, we propose an efficient network-coding-based content sharing scheme (NCCSS) for mobile devices via WiFi Direct. When the file owner wants to share a file to others, it equally splits the file into multiple pieces, and then linearly encodes the pieces into segments with random linear network coding (RLNC). After that, it switches itself to an access point (AP), and waits to accept request from other devices. For each device in the network, it connects to the AP, and requests linearly independent segments. After it has received a fixed number of encoded segments, it switches itself to a new AP to enlarge the coverage of sharing. By strategically switching devices between the AP mode and ordinary mode, all devices could receive sufficient segments and recover the original file. NCCSS was evaluated in a real-world testbed consisting of 20 mobile devices. The experimental results show that compared to the traditional replication-based transmission scheme and erasure-coding-based transmission scheme, NCCSS could provide higher sharing rate. © 2023 IEEE.

An HMAC-based authentication scheme for network coding with support for error correction and rogue node identification

Authentication schemes based on homomorphic message authentication codes (HMACs) with or without a homomorphic cryptographic signature (HCS) have always played a vital role in network coding (NC). A newly developing trend with respect to research in this area takes authentication in NC-compatible networks beyond error detection. Current HMAC-based authentication schemes for networks that support NC not only detect and drop corrupted packets but also identify the rogue nodes that begun the attack. However, in order to completely optimize the performance of an NC-enabled network, nodes that identify corrupted packets should also be able to correct the errors. Doing this eliminates the communication cost associated with the need for re-transmission and improves throughput. In this paper we propose what to the best of our knowledge is the first of such HMAC-based authentication schemes. Like all current state of the art HMAC-based authentication schemes, the proposed scheme is able to identify pollution attacks and the nodes that launched them. Furthermore, the proposed scheme is also able to correct the corruption. This according to our evaluation improves the throughput of the network when compared to other similar state of the art schemes that do not possess this feature.

Advances in micro-electro mechanical systems technology have enabled sensors to face new challenges. The goal of wireless sensor networks (WSN) is to collect data that can be transmitted to a remote base station to serve several applications. For every type of Data is a different type of Protocol. This approach can transport non sensitive Data, sensitive data in case of privacy and highly priotized Messages in case of emergency. Our contributions concern both the Set-up phase and the steady phase of the transmission process. Thus, a clustering method is proposed to create the right network topology to exploit the full potential of network coding in WSN.

In-network caching and multipath forwarding are prominent features of Named Data networking (NDN). network coding enabled NDN (NC-NDN) coordinates the in-network caching and multipath forwarding to improve content delivery performance. However, the existing NC-NDN lacks the considerations on the incorporation with caching schemes. It basically adopts the caching scheme of Caching Everything Everywhere (CEE) leading to cache redundancy and unnecessary and frequent cache replacement. On the other hand, the existing caching schemes for native NDN do not make use of the characteristic of network coded Data packets. To address these problems, this paper proposes a demand and responsiveness-based caching strategy specific to NC-NDN to enable cost-effective caching for network coded Data packets. In our proposed caching strategy, the caching decision at a caching node takes into account three factors, its present demand on the network coded Data packets of the requested generation of content, its distance to the original content provider, and its potential responsiveness to the future requests for the same generation based on the number of network coded Data packets locally cached and that would return for the requested generation. It commits to cache network coded Data packets of a generation of content at more valuable nodes along the transmission path. Our experimental studies show that the proposed caching strategy offers high-perlia-mance content delivery and reduces the caching overhead as compared to the existing strategies.

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology has been proposed as a leading step toward road safety improvement and intelligent transportation systems, and these vehicular-related applications rely on reliable ways of communication. For the regions which are not covered by communication infrastructure or deployment of centralized controllers are not straightforward, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication is a potential solution. Reliability is crucial in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) from beacon broadcasting and security aspects. Group-casting and applying multi-hop communication can ensure reliability in V2X systems. In this paper, a distributed grouping and network coding-assisted medium access control protocol (GNC-MAC) is proposed to support reliable group-casting. We propose a new grouping protocol by combining preamble-based feedback mechanism, multi-hop communication, and network coding to improve group-casting reliability. Extensive simulations have been conducted to show the performance gain of the GNC-MAC protocol compared to the existing 5G cellular vehicle-to everything (C-V2X) MAC protocol in a wide range of scenarios.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) face some security issues when transmitting data to the base station as these networks involve resources scarcity that needs to be tackled in the routing protocols. More specifically, collected and distributed data are only profitable if their confidentiality is guaranteed. Lately, some approaches have used network coding properties to comply with confidentiality issues. This paper proposes a Secure network coding-enabled approach for a confidential cluster-based Routing (SNCR) protocol in wireless sensor networks. It aims to thwart eavesdropping attacks and minimize energy dissipation within a clustered network. Our scheme uses the transmission of a single digit instead of all encoding coefficients, which reduces the communication overheads in the network. Confidentiality investigations and protocol discussions show that SNCR provides a countermeasure to eavesdropping attacks and ensures a compromise between security and the energy efficiency of data transmission in a multi-hop routing scheme.
