It has been previously proven that optimal solutions to mulitcast routing and scheduling can be achieved using back-pressure together with network coding. However, this optimality comes at the cost of increased latency and complexity, which cannot be afforded in tactical military operations. In this work, we present the Greatest Group Gradient for Multicast over back-pressure (G3M), a heuristic that greatly reduces complexity, state and latency when compared to solutions that use network coding, while approaching the same optimal solutions. Unlike most prior approaches, G3M does not rely on the construction of explicit multicast trees. Instead, it uses only queue information from the 1-hop neighborhood to make distributed forwarding decisions, that are globally optimal. Additionally, we present updates to the admission control algorithm that promotes fairness between multicast flows with different characteristics. With this in place G3M can use the same forwarding algorithm can be used with both unicast and multicast traffic. We also introduce an algorithmic enhancement to back-pressure forwarding, which we call opportunistic forwarding, to reduce the replication of multicast packets, allowing the heuristic to operate closer to the optimal solution during transient network conditions. Our results show that the G3M heuristic converges to the provable optimal solution.

In this paper we look after the secure delivery of multimedia content across an innovative Content Delivery network comprising both satellite and terrestrial trunks. The CDN in question leverages state-of-the-art technologies both at the edges and in the core of the integrated distribution architecture and highly relies upon in-network caching strategies in order to improve its performance. We propose an architecture envisaging a combination of multicast, simulcast and unicast communication scenarios where satellite links are exploited to support local in-network caching. We analyse integrated network deployment scenarios where the satellite acts as the interconnection link between distributed in-network caches and a terrestrial CDN and/or feeds edge-network caches at micro-centre locations.

With more and more success of Software Defined networking (SDN) in academia and industry, people have started to explore how to integrate SDN into military coalitions, to realize a software-defined coalition (SDC) infrastructure. However, the integration of SDN into SDC is non-trivial due to the insufficiencies of the SDN datapath for expressing the data plane behavior in SDC systems. In particular, SDC systems operate in highly dynamic tactical networks (e.g., wireless networks) and requires the data plane to support a wider range of events other than the traditional incoming packet event in wired SDN. In addition, SDC systems widely adopt in-network processing (INP) such as network coding, and supporting these functionalities in the data plane requires flexible storage for packets and complex operations on both packet headers and payload, which are not supported in the existing SDN datapath. In this paper, we tackle these issues by designing OpenSDC, a novel, generic SDC datapath which extends the current match-action primitive, with three new primitives: event, packet buffer, and packet INP block. The implementation of the proposed primitives can be optimized using a range of techniques to accelerate the event processing efficiency of OpenSDC. We implement a prototype of the proposed datapath, and demonstrate its ability to support network-coding-based 1+1 data delivery protection in dynamic tactical networks. Evaluation results show that compared with a state-of-the-art proactive protection system implemented using only match-action tables, our prototype significantly improves the efficiency and resiliency of tactical networks.
