Hierarchical Optical Path network design algorithm Considering Waveband Add/Drop Ratio Constraint

A new hierarchical optical path network design algorithm that incorporates restrictions on waveband add/drop ratios at nodes is proposed. We evaluate its effectiveness by conducting extensive numerical experiments. The effects of the network parameters, which include network size, link distance, and network topology, on total network cost are elucidated. The results show that the proposed algorithm, which considers restrictions on the waveband add/drop ratio, yields almost the same cost as an algorithm that does not consider the add/drop ratio when the ratio is not so stringent, say, greater than 0.3. It is also demonstrated that choosing the waveband capacity properly is critical in minimizing total network cost.

We propose a hierarchical optical path network design algorithm. In order to efficiently accommodate wavelength paths in each waveband path, we define a source-destination Cartesian product space that allows the 'closeness' among wavelength paths to be assessed. By grouping 'close’ wavelength paths, found by searching for clusters in the space, we iteratively create waveband paths that efficiently accommodate the wavelength paths. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm offers lower total network cost than the conventional algorithms. The results also show that the hierarchical optical path network is effective even when traffic demand is relatively small. © 2008, IEEE. All rights reserved.

We propose a novel scalable large-scale OXC architecture with a two-stage hetero-granular optical path switching mechanism based on a combination of different granular optical selective switches and an appropriate network design algorithm that can make the best use of the proposed OXC architecture for building cost-effective large capacity optical networks. Simulation results verify that our proposed solution can offer a significant overall network cost reduction. The cost efficiency of networks based on the architecture is also investigated in relation to switching component cost and different network parameters. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We analyze cost reductions possible with the introduction of a waveband converter or both wavelength and waveband converters to hierarchical optical path networks. We propose network design algorithms that are based on multistage integer linear programming (ILP) or heuristics. Numerical experiments prove that by employing waveband converters or both waveband and wavelength converters, hierarchical optical path networks can be cost effective over wide traffic demand ranges and a broad converter cost range.

In this paper, we present a hybrid-hierarchical optical cross-connect (hybrid-HOXC) architecture that employs a waveband cross-connect for adding/dropping or routing waveband paths and an electrical cross-connect to grooming wavelength paths. Then, we have proposed a heuristic design algorithm for the hybrid-HOXCs based optical path networks. MENTOR (Mesh network Topological Optimization and Routing) is an efficient heuristic design algorithm network that assigns traffic flow while selecting links to be installed. MENTOR is suitable to design networks categorized as virtual circuit packet switching such as Frame Relay, ATM and MPLS networks. However, MENTOR cannot be directly applied to datagram packet switching networks such as purely IP router network. This is because the traffic flows determined by original MENTOR are not always the shortest path routing based on IP link weight assignment. To solve this problem, Cahn proposed a modified version of MENTOR called MENTOR-II in which appropriate link weights are assigned to the installed links such that the traffic always route on the path with minimum distance. However, it should be noted that the traffic flows assigned by MENTOR-II are limited to a single path routing. This study proposed a new modified version of MENTOR called Enhance-MENTOR, or E-MENTOR, which is able to assign traffic with the Equal Cost Multi-Path (ECMP) routing. Three options of E-MENTOR are considered, i.e. E-MENTOR with single path routing only, E-MENTOR with ECMP routing only and E-MENTOR that consider ECMP routing if benefit. The three options of E-MENTOR are evaluated in term of installation cost, routing cost and reliability for 729 network design conditions. The design results are compared with those of original MENTOR and MENTOR-II.
