Tor is a powerful and important tool for providing anonymity and censorship resistance to users around the world. Yet it is surprisingly difficult to deploy new services in Tor - -it is largely relegated to proxies and hidden services - -or to nimbly react to new forms of attack. Conversely, "non-anonymous"Internet services are thriving like never before because of recent advances in programmable networks, such as network function virtualization (NFV) which provides programmable in-network middleboxes. This work seeks to close this gap by introducing programmable middleboxes into the Tor network. In this architecture, users can install and run sophisticated "functions"on willing Tor routers,further improving anonymity, resilience to attack, performance of hidden services, and more. We present the design of an architecture, Bento, that protects middlebox nodes from the functions they run and protects the functions from the middleboxes they run on. Bento does not require modifications to Tor, and can run on the live Tor network. Additionally, we give an overview of how we can significantly extend the capabilities of Tor to meet users' anonymity needs and nimbly react to new threats. © 2020 Owner/Author.

network function virtualization (NFV) enables operators to flexibly deploy network services on commodity servers in an on-demand and agile manner. This has recently attracted significant attention from industry and academia. However, there are important challenges for NFV deployment, including performance bottlenecks, degraded fault tolerance, upgrading complexities, and security threats. To overcome these challenges, the microservice approach, which has been applied successfully in cloud computing, has motivated the research communities to apply its principles in NFV domains. In this paper, we first compare the challenges of employing the microservices approach in both the cloud computing and the NFV domains, and then discuss the need for AI-enabled microservices architecture for NFV. Performance evaluation of the microservices approach in NFV is performed on bare-metal machine setups. The results compare the pros and cons of the microservice approach and show the need for AI to handle the complex decisions associated with decomposing network functions into microservices or vice versa. We also propose an AI-enabled microservice architecture and present its potential use cases for personalized live streaming, smart public safety, and enterprise VPN (Virtual Private network). Open questions and future work are also presented. © 2020 IEEE.

network function virtualization (NFV) is a new networking paradigm, enabling network innovation through virtualization of traditional hardware-based network functions in the form of virtual network functions. NFV is used to virtualize the network functions by decoupling the software implementation from the dedicated hardware. Moreover, NFV is gaining a lot of momentum from network operators by implementing the software version of a hardware appliance called Virtual network function (VNF) on commodity and general-purpose servers. Additionally, it helps to reduce both capital cost (CAPEX) and operating costs (OPEX) with the help of virtualization. But, NFV is still in a nascent stage with issues that need to be addressed for the development of an efficient network. The motivation behind this work is that for the development of an efficient, agile, and flexible network system, NFV technology may prove to be a key enabler. In this paper, we discuss the different stages for the development of NFV and NFV architecture along with sequence flow diagram among various components. The research challenges in adoption of this technology are also presented. This will help researchers to conduct useful research in this promising area. © 2020 IEEE.

network function virtualization (NFV) refers to the process of running network functions in virtualized IT infrastructures as soft-warized Virtual network functions (VNFs). Several telecom service providers are currently benefiting from this concept, as it enables a faster introduction of new network services, thereby meeting changing requirements. Following a trend initially adopted by cloud service providers, telecom service providers are also adopting deaggregation of the VNFs into microservices (mu services). However, a mu service-based architecture that can manage a large set of diverse and sensitive network functions requires new Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based methodologies to cope with the complexity of the mu service-based NFV paradigm. This paper focuses on the use of explainable AI (XAI) for gradually migrating towards a mu services-based architecture in NFV. The paper first establishes the need for XAI to transform the NFV architecture to a mu service-based architecture and then describes some of our research objectives. Afterwards, our preliminary approach and long-term visions are provided.

In order to improve the output stability of communication network nodes, a fault recovery strategy of communication network nodes based on channel equalization scheduling under the virtualization of network functions is proposed. The channel model of wireless communication network under the condition of virtual network function is established, and the communication channel equalization is designed by Porter interval equalization scheduling method, function virtualization, the phase shift of output channel of each node is obtained, and the impulse response of analog channel under the condition of network function virtualization is obtained. The simulation results show that this method has good adaptability to the fault recovery of communication network nodes, reduces the output error rate of communication network, and improves the transmission fidelity of communication network nodes. © 2020 IEEE.

network function virtualization (NFV), as a promising paradigm, speeds up the service deployment by separating network functions from proprietary devices and deploying them on common servers in the form of software. Any service in NFV-enabled networks is achieved as a Service function Chain (SFC) which consists of a series of ordered Virtual network functions (VNFs). However, migration of VNFs for more flexible services within a dynamic NFV-enabled network is a key challenge to be addressed. Current VNF migration studies mainly focus on single VNF migration decisions without considering the sharing and concurrent migration of VNF instances. In this paper, we assume that each deployed VNF is used by multiple SFCs and deal with the optimal placement for the contemporaneous migration of VNFs based on the actual network situation. We formalize the VNF migration and SFC reconfiguration problem as a mathematical model, which aims to minimize the VNF migration between nodes or the total number of core changes per node. The approach is a two-stage MILP based on optimal order to solve the reconfiguration. Extensive evaluation shows that the proposed approach can reduce the change in terms of location or number of cores per node in a 6-node and 14-node networks while ensuring network latency compared with the model without reconfiguration. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

The design, management, and operation of network infrastructure have evolved during the last few years, leveraging on innovative technologies and architectures. With such a huge trend, due to the flexibility and significant economic potential of these technologies, software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) are emerging as the most indispensable key catalysers. SDN/NFV enhancing the infrastructure agility, thus network operators and service providers are able to program their own network functions (e.g., gateways, routers, load balancers) on vendor-independent hardware substrate. One of the most important considerations in NFV deployment is how to allocate the virtual resources that are needed to provide flexible virtual network services in an NFV-based network infrastructure. Thus, the most important prerequisite for NFV deployment is achieved fast, scalable and dynamic composition and allocation of networks functions (NFs) to implement network services (NSs). We have proposed a revised RA algorithm that integrates embedding and scheduling of virtual network functions (VNFs) simultaneously. In this paper, performance evaluation of the revised RA algorithm is performed and the proposed algorithm is applied more effectively in NFV environment where the demand for resources is flexible and concentrated.

network function virtualization (NFV / VNF) and information-centric networking (ICN) are two trending technologies that have attracted expert's attention. NFV is a technique in which network functions (NF) are decoupling from commodity hardware to run on to create virtual communication services. The virtualized class nodes can bring several advantages such as reduce Operating Expenses (OPEX) and Capital Expenses (CAPEX). On the other hand, ICN is a technique that breaks the host-centric paradigm and shifts the focus to “named information” or content-centric. ICN provides highly efficient content retrieval network architecture where popular contents are cached to minimize duplicate transmissions and allow mobile users to access popular contents from caches of network gateways. This paper investigates the implementation of NFV in ICN. Besides, reviewing and discussing the weaknesses and strengths of each architecture in a critical analysis manner of both network architectures. Eventually, highlighted the current issues and future challenges of both architectures.

NFV is an emerging key technology that over-comes many challenges facing network service providers, such as reducing the capital and the operating expenses and satisfying the growing demand for mobile services. Integrating NFV with MEC and cloud environments requires an architecture that enables efficient implementations and deployments of NFV entities. Microservices architecture is a promising implementation of service-oriented architecture with recognized advantages in terms of modularity and continuous delivery. This article envisions microservices architecture as the solution of choice for building NFV platforms that are hosted in a dynamic environment ranging from MEC to cloud environments. This article addresses the major challenges and requirements of the microservices architecture to fully-exploit the potential of its adoption in NFV. It also proposes potential solutions that alleviate these issues. The article also discusses the need for agile and modular NFV entities along with MEC to realize various applications. To this end, the article discusses explicitly a novel NFV rnicroservices entities scheduler optimization model. The proposed scheduler aims at minimizing network delays while taking into consideration various functional and non-functional constraints. The evaluation of the simulation results demonstrates that the proposed model minimizes the computational paths' latencies and improves the performance and availability of the NFV service chains.

Space-air-ground integrated network is the promising solution for the data communication of the emerging energy internet. By decoupling network functions from the underlying dedicated hardware and realizing those in the form of software, network functions virtualization, provide benefits of reduction of Capital Expenditure and Operation Expense, improved flexibility of service provision, is the enabling technology to meet the diver’s services requirement of Space-air-ground integrated energy internet. In this paper, resource allocation for network functions virtualization of Space-air-ground integrated energy internet is considered. A queuing based model is employed to match the service function chain to the available system resources. A Genetic based VNF deployment algorithm is proposed and numerical results validate it superior’s performance.
