network Function virtualization (NFV) brings a new set of challenges when deploying virtualized services on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware. network functions can be dynamically managed to provide the necessary services on-demand and further, services can be chained together to form a larger composite. In this paper, we address an important technical problem of mapping service function chains (SFCs) across different data centers with the objective of reducing the flow processing costs. We develop an integer linear programming (ILP) formulation to optimally map service function chains to multiple data centers while adhering to the data center's capacity constraints. We propose a novel application-aware flow reduction (AAFR) algorithm to simplify the SFC-ILP to significantly reduce the number of flows processed by the SFCs. We perform a thorough study of the SFC mapping problem for multiple data centers and evaluate the performance of our proposed approach with respect to three parameters: i) impact of number of SFCs and SFC length on flow processing cost, ii) capacitated/uncapacitated flow processing cost gains, and iii) balancing flow-to-SFC mappings across data centers. Our evaluations show that our proposed AAFR algorithm reduces flow-processing costs by 70% for the capacitated-SFC mapping case over the SFC-ILP. In addition, our 'incapacitated AAFR (AAFR-U) algorithm provides a further 4.1% cost-gain over its capacitated counterpart (AAFR-C).

VNF placement and traffic steering have received considerable attention in the literature, ever since business pressures started driving telecom operators to embrace virtualization technologies instead of continuing with the expensive "dedicated hardware and appliance" approach. However, most proposed solutions are not exact. When the formulated problem results in an Integer Linear Program (ILP) or a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP), the focus shifts to searching for heuristics. We show that using the Column Generation (CG) technique, exact solutions can be obtained quickly. The CG approach can be used to solve problems in both offline and online scenarios. For the aggregate bandwidth minimization problem, the exact solution provided by CG improves significantly upon "DP-COA", a recently proposed heuristic. However, aggregate bandwidth minimization can lead to highly uneven link loading. Motivated by this, we formulate another problem in which the objective is to minimize the maximum link bandwidth consumed over all links in the network. This problem is also solved exactly using CG. Results indicate that this approach can help achieve balanced traffic demand placement.

The principle of network functions virtualization (NFV) aims to transform network architectures by implementing network functions (NFs) in software that can run on commodity hardware. There are several challenges inherent to NFV, among which is the need for an orchestration and management framework. This paper presents the Cloud4NFV platform, which follows the major NFV standard guidelines. The platform is presented in detail and special attention is given to data modelling aspects. Further, insights on the current implementation of the platform are given, showing that part of its foundations lay on cloud infrastructure management and Software Defined networking (SDN) platforms. Finally, it is presented a proof-of-concept (PoC) that illustrates how the platform can be used to deliver a novel service to end customers, focusing on Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) related functions.

Software-Defined networking (SDN) relies on open programmability of network devices, which is achieved by defining new communication interfaces, network operating systems, and changing the traditional decision-making logic of regular TCP/IP networks. network functions virtualization (NFV), in turn, permits virtualizing network functions that are traditionally performed by physical middleboxes (e.g., firewalling and intrusion detection/prevention). Although SDN and NFV improve the flexibility of the management of computer networks, SDN remains vulnerable to major network security problems, such as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. These attacks typically result in the disruption of network services and resources. In this paper, we introduce ANSwer, an architecture that combines NFV and SDN features to create sophisticated network resilience strategies. ANSwer relies on a feedback control-loop which explores SDN features to monitor and analyze the behavior of the network infrastructure, indicating whether parts of an existing resilience strategy can be reconfigured to achieve more satisfactory results, or if an entire resilience strategy needs to be added or replaced. Our experiments demonstrate that ANSwer can rapidly identify and handle distinct anomalies in different scenarios, indicating that the reconfiguration and deployment of resilience strategies can be performed in real-time.

network functions virtualization (NFV) has been revolutionizing and improving the way networking services are deployed but also requires the dynamic scaling of resources during the lifecycle management of Virtual network functions (VNFs) with increasing service demand. We propose an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) approach and a Greedy heuristic to address this NP-Hard scaling problem. Both horizontal (scale out/in) and vertical (scale up/down) scaling are considered and the scalability of the ILP is addressed by reducing the number of candidate hosts in the search space. Extensive simulations evaluate the performance of the algorithms in successful scalings and VNF migrations and highlight the importance of using the algorithms to tidy up the infrastructure to accept more users. The results show that the ILP can outperform the Greedy heuristic if appropriate actions are selected.

network Function virtualization seeks to run high performance middleboxes in a flexible, more configurable software environment. Even with advances such as kernel bypass and zero-copy IO, middlebox platforms still struggle to meet stringent throughput and latency requirements. To achieve line rates as network bandwidths rise, these platforms often must make tradeoffs such as inefficiently dedicating more CPU cores or weakening security and isolation properties. In this paper we explore how advances in programmable "smart NICs" can be leveraged by software middlebox platforms to improve performance, resource efficiency, and security. Our evaluation shows several use cases for smart NICs, which improve performance significantly while reducing resource consumption and providing strong isolation.

virtualization of various network equipment has been already seen in modern telco and cloud networks. Their mission-critical virtualized devices commonly run on ASIC-powered white-box switches instead of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) x86 servers for performance reasons. In fact, many studies have revealed insufficient throughput/latency of virtual machine/container-based virtual network functions (VNFs) on x86 servers, and virtual network I/O implementations have been thought to be major performance bottlenecks. Zero-copy and pass-through are well-known techniques to reduce the I/O overhead between a host and a guest;however, existing implementations incur pragmatic issues including security, compatibility, management, and inexplicable performance characteristics. In this paper, we propose a fully software-based SR-IOV-like zero-copy/pass-through technique, Tee-type I/O virtualization (IOVTee), to resolve the problems. IOVTee takes advantage of SR-IOV and NetVM under the framework of de-facto standard DPDK/vhost-user. Inbound packet "data" are directly stored into VM's memory space like SR-IOV, but the hypervisor's virtual switch can handle the packets before the VNF's processing like NetVM. We evaluated the performance of IOVTee in 100 GbE environment, and the results showed that an IOVTee-accelerated single core VNF achieved about 19 Mpps (64 bytes) and 90 Gbps (1518 bytes) throughputs.

virtualization enables the sharing of a same wireless sensor network (WSN) by multiple applications. However, in heterogeneous environments, virtualized wireless sensor networks (VWSN) raise new challenges such as the need for on-the-fly, dynamic, elastic, and scalable provisioning of gateways. network functions virtualization (NFV) is an emerging paradigm that can certainly aid in tackling these new challenges. It leverages standard virtualization technology to consolidate special-purpose network elements on top of commodity hardware. This article presents a case study on NFV based gateways for VWSNs. In the study, a VWSN gateway provider operates and manages an NFV based infrastructure. We use two different brands of wireless sensors. The NFV infrastructure makes possible the dynamic, elastic, and scalable deployment of gateway modules in this heterogeneous VWSN environment. The prototype built with Openstack as platform is described.

The Fifth-Generation mobile networks (5G) and Beyond 5G (B5G) have been proposed to support a variety of application scenarios, such as enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications (uRLLC), and massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC). On the other hand, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and network functions virtualization (NFV) technologies have been widely advocated by service providers to meet diverse service demands and reduce operational costs. To alleviate the pressure on the edge network, resource consumption can be minimized by considering the reuse of Virtual network Function (VNF) instances. However, implementing VNF chain deployment with latency guarantees and resource efficiency in a distributed network architecture remains an urgent issue to be addressed. In this paper, we explore the Service Function Chains (SFCs) orchestration problem with distributed edge network resources, aiming to design efficient service flow routing and resource allocation schemes to significantly respond to local user requests. We propose a low-complexity Distributed SFCs Orchestration algorithm with VNF Reuse (DSOR), which initially uses local information at the edge to explore the VNFs orchestration scheme and executes the distributed service orchestration. Subsequently, service chains are deployed based on asynchronous consensus to enhance network utility and reduce resource costs. Finally, the performance of DSOR is evaluated through extensive simulation experiments. The experimental results indicate that DSOR can improve the utilization of network resources, as well as the response rate to edge service requests.

JnanaEdge provides a fundamentally different approach to bringing a knowledge experience, in a qualitatively rich, focused way to specific demographics. This is done through an interdisciplinary convergence of key technological advancements from scalable hierarchical system architectures, cloud computing, dynamic cache hierarchies, and distributed virtualization. Architecture and implementation considerations are presented, particularly for BuddhiEdge which instantiates the JnanaEdge framework in the educational scope. Future directions are also suggested.
