NFV (network functions virtualization) is one of the latest promising technologies making networks more flexible, controllable, cost-efficient and innovative. NFV is being utilized extensively for providing cutting edge networking solutions, including virtual cyber security functions. functions virtualized with NFV such as firewall, deep packet inspection, intrusion detection systems etc. can reside as applications in the network architecture. Determining the deployment locations of these functions in the network is an important research challenge due to the necessity of achieving different operational objectives such as minimizing latency, network load, cost or energy consumption etc. while meeting cyber security requirements. Among these objectives, optimizing the energy consumption of a network is of vital importance to reduce operating expenses. In this study, we propose an ILP (Integer Linear Programming) model for placing virtualized cyber security functions in a network with the objective of minimizing server energy consumption. We implement and test our model on two different network topologies. Experimental results show that our model can reduce energy consumption significantly while providing cyber security at the desired level.

This work shows how the performance of a network function can be estimated with an error margin that is small enough to properly support orchestration of network functions virtualization (NFV) platforms. Being able to estimate the performance of a virtualized network function (VNF) on execution hardware of various types enables its optimal placement, while efficiently utilizing available resources. network functions are modeled using a methodology focused on the identification of recurring execution patterns and aimed at providing a platform independent representation. By mapping the model on specific hardware, the performance of the network function can be estimated in terms of maximum throughput that the network function can achieve on the specific execution platform. The approach is such that once the basic modeling building blocks have been mapped, the estimate can be computed automatically. This work presents the model of an Ethernet switch and evaluates its accuracy by comparing the performance estimation it provides with experimental results.

In the last few years, Software Defined networks (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) have been introduced in the telecommunications networks as a new way to design, deploy and manage networking services. Working together, they are able to consolidate and deliver the networking components using standard IT virtualization technologies making, in such a way, Telco infrastructures more flexible and adaptive with respect to the needs of both end users and service providers. In this context, this paper presents a prototype of softwarized live streaming platform allowing carriers to simplify functions/services management and deployment. Target of the proposed framework is enabling small/medium and unusual content providers to share events with their followers without the need of adopting a dedicated and expensive data delivery infrastructure.

Software Defined networks (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) have been introduced in the telecommunications engineering as a new way to design, deploy and manage networking services. Working together, they are able to consolidate and deliver the networking components using standard IT virtualization technologies making, in such a way, carriers infrastructures more flexible and adaptive in respect to the needs of both end-users and service providers. In this context, this paper presents the architecture and the related prototype of a video broadcasting service tailored for SDNNVF enabled networks, allowing network and application functions deployment simplification and management cost reduction. In such a way, the proposed solution enables small/medium and unusual content providers to share events with a restricted number of interested users without the need of adopting a dedicated and expensive data delivery infrastructure. network functions virtualization (NFV) enhances the flexibility of network service provisioning and reduces the time to services deployment. NFV and SDN promises transform the carrier networks, introducing innovation in the network core. NFV moves packet processing from dedicated hardware middleboxes to Virtualized network functions (VNFs), which run on virtual machines hosted on commercial off-the-shelf servers. However, in NFV-enabled networks, the amount of data managed grows in a fast way. Based on this, the network operator must understand and manipulate a lot of information to effectively manage the network. In this paper, we introduce the VISION, a platform to help the network operator to determine the cause of problems based on visualizations techniques. Our platform implements a set of interactive and selective visualizations to assist in the NFV management. Finally, we conducted three cases studies to provide evidences of the feasibility of our platform.

Slicing of a 5G network by creating virtualized instances of network functions facilitates the support of different service types with varying requirements. The management and orchestration layer identifies the components in the virtualization infrastructure to form an end-to-end slice for an intended service type. The key security challenges for the softwarized 5G networks are, (i) ensuring availability of a centralized controller/orchestrator, (ii) association between legitimate network slice components, and (iii) network slice isolation. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose a novel implicit mutual authentication and key establishment with group anonymity protocol using proxy re-encryption on elliptic curve. The protocol provides (i) controller independent distributed association between components of a network slice, (ii) implicit authentication between network slice components to allow secure association, (iii) secure key establishment between component pairs for secure slice isolation, and (iv) service group anonymity. The proposed protocol's robustness is validated with necessary security analysis. The computation and bandwidth overheads of the proposed protocol are compared with that of the certificate based protocol, and our proposed protocol has 9.52% less computation overhead and 13.64% less bandwidth overhead for Type A1 pairing.

network functions virtualization (NFV) is developed to take advantage of virtualization technologies to separate network functions from the underlying hardware appliances. This approach brings a new level of flexibility in network services deployment for rapid composition, migration and scaling based on changing traffic load and current demand, leading to a higher QoS. Moreover, it allows introducing DevOps approach in the development process resulting in reduced life-cycle and shorter time-to-market. However, in order to realize the anticipated benefits of NFV, developers and network operators need mechanisms to adequately test Virtualized network functions (VNF) against different deployment scenarios and in different scales. To this end, we introduce a new library for light-weight automated functional testing of VNFs. It helps the developers to write functional tests in Python and run them on different platforms. Using the library, test developers choose which infrastructure to use, which network services and test VNFs to launch, how to interconnect them, how to trigger the test process and inspect, verify and validate the output against the expected values and conditions. Test developers can use network service packages to deploy services or can compose them in a test code using different parameters to simulate various deployment scenarios. Finally, the library can be used to set automated testing in CI/CD environments or can be used locally during the development phase. In this paper, we describe the architecture of the library, the basic workflow and give an example of testing multiple flavors of a network service using the same code.

Technology advances and costs reductions in processing, storage and communications will determine, in the next years, a growing amassing of IT and networking resources at the edge of current networks (i.e., not only in the distribution and access segments, but up to the end Users devices). Moreover, the edge is also where we are witnessing "intelligence" migrating, already since a few years. This paper argues that the adoption, in this area, of Software Defined networks and network Function virtualization solutions will create a sort of distributed communication "fabric" offering an enormous processing and storage power, to execute functions and services, and to store data. This, together with the economic drive given by a myriad of new Players (entering the arena) along with the rapid expansion of ICT services, will lead to a shift from a network infrastructure, whose capabilities are statically "designed and provisioned", to an highly flexible edge fabric whose dynamics is an emergent property of the ever changing aggregation and usage of resources.

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) developed network functions virtualization (NFV) Management and Orchestration (MANO) framework. Within that framework, NFV orchestrator (NFVO) and Virtualized network Function (VNF) Manager (VNFM) functional blocks are responsible for managing the lifecycle of network services and their associated VNFs. However, they face significant scalability and performance challenges in large-scale and geo-distributed NFV systems. Their number and location have major implications for the number of VNFs that can be accommodated and also for the overall system performance. NFVO and VNFM placement is therefore a key challenge due to its potential impact on the system scalability and performance. In this paper, we address the placement of NFVO and VNFM in large-scale and geo-distributed NFV infrastructure. We provide an integer linear programming formulation of the problem and propose a two-step placement algorithm to solve it. We also conduct a set of experiments to evaluate the proposed algorithm.

In an attempt to assess the suitability of current Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) technologies for fulfilling 5G-ready applications requirements, this paper has exploited the CNIT S2N testbed to perform a validation over a complete 5G ecosystem. The testbed supports the telecom network platform developed within the MATILDA Project, which adopts the vanilla versions of the main reference projects/software suites in the 5G field, such as OpenStack and Open-Source MANO (OSM). By including such familiar technologies in the 5G ecosystem, vertical industries would interact with a familiar environment similar to today's scenarios, which would lower the barrier for creating 5G-ready applications. However, results show that current solutions are blamable for around 99% of the deployment time of applications and network slices, a figure that bumps their lifecycle up to the order of magnitude of minutes proving them still not suitable to fulfill 5G requirements.
