Due to the emergence of Software Defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) paradigms, coupled with a hyper-connectivity communication paradigm, the "softwarization" of the Internet infrastructure and of its network management framework is gaining increasing popularity. This is the target of the INPUT platform, a novel infrastructure and paradigm supporting Future Internet personal cloud services in a more scalable and sustainable way, and with innovative added-value capabilities. The INPUT technologies enable nextgeneration cloud applications to go beyond classical service models, and even replace physical Smart Devices, usually placed in users' homes (e.g., set-top boxes), with their virtual images, providing them to users "as a Service". In this paper we present the Virtual set-top box from both architectural and functional points of view, demonstrating the feasibility of the softwarized SDN/NFV paradigm joined with the fog-computing approach to support personal cloud services.(1)

network functions virtualization (NFV) is driving a paradigm shift in telecommunications networks, fostering new business models and creating innovation opportunities. In NFV-enabled networks, Service Providers (SPs) have the opportunity to build a business model where tenants can purchase Virtual network functions (VNFs) that provide distinct network services and functions. However, the chance to negotiate VNFs requires a change in traditional network planning strategies to accommodate tenants demands. In this context, the planning tasks perform a critical role in the introducing of business strategies that encompass both profit and health of services, which requires operators to have a broad understanding of the environment. In this paper, we propose the usage of two interactive visualization techniques to help NFV network operators in planning and strategic decisions. We advocate that our visualizations can aid in NFV planning tasks, such as infrastructure investment, resources allocation, and service pricing. We present three case studies to provide evidence of the feasibility and effectiveness of our visualizations.

The paper discusses how Software Defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) techniques can support survivability of military networks, both on the strategic / operational and tactical levels. In the introduction the term survivability has been described. Then the attention is paid to the possibilities of supporting the following situations: mobility of users (individual soldiers), network segments (entire military units at low levels of command), service mobility and recovery from the destruction of key network components. These article describes both the possibilities associated with the use of technologies widely adapted in the civil market and the challenges of using the technology in specific military applications.

network functions virtualization is a new technology for the future internet that eliminates the dependency of the network function and the hardware requirement. The network functions virtualization provides a successful approach for meeting the increase in demand of the end-to-end (E2E) services with low operational and capital costs. Replacing the network specific purpose hardware (e.g. firewall) with a software implementation of the network functions in which a chain of Virtualized network functions (VNFs) can logically connect the end points and provide the desired network services. However, this approach is associated with the challenge of dynamically mapping the predefined VNFs onto the existing substrate network in an optimal way. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective approach for mapping the VNFs with the physical resources in a dynamic service request environment. The algorithm considers the priority dependency between the VNFs as a case of study, with the objective of minimizing the mapping blocking rate.

network traffic and computing demand have been changing dramatically due to the growth of various types of network services, e.g., high-quality video delivery and operating system (OS) updates. To maximize the utilization efficiency of limited network resources, network resource control technology is required for smooth and quick operation when network demands change. We propose a dynamic virtual network (VN) allocation method based on cooperative multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (Coop-MADRL). This method can quickly optimize network resources even while network demands are drastically changing by learning the relationship between network demand patterns and optimal allocation by using deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in advance. The key idea is to use a multi-agent technique for a reinforcement learning (RL) based dynamic VN allocation method, which can reduce the number of candidate actions per agent and can improve the performance for VN allocation. Moreover, a cooperation technique improves the efficiency of VN allocation. From results of a simulation evaluation, Coop-MADRL can calculate effective allocation within 1 s, which reduces the maximum server and link utilization and drastically reduces the average constraint violation compared with that of the static VN allocation method.

The introduction of network functions virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined networking (SDN) to mobile networks enables operators to control and dimension their network resources with higher granularity and on a more fine-grained time scale. This dynamic operation allows operators to cope with the rapid growth of traffic and user demands, in addition to reducing costs. In this paper, we model and analyze a realization of the mobile core network as virtualized software instances running in datacenters (DC) and SDN transport network elements (NE), with respect to time-varying traffic demands. It is our objective to determine the datacenters placement that achieves the minimum transport network load considering time-varying traffic and under a data-plane delay budget. A second objective is to achieve power savings, considering the variation of traffic over time, by using the available datacenter resources or by acquiring additional resources.

La virtualisation est une tentative prometteuse pour résoudre certains défis de la 5G. La virtualisation consiste à exécuter des fonctions réseaux en tant que logiciels sur une infrastructure physique partagée. Cela optimise les coûts de déploiement et simplifie la gestion, mais il introduit de nouveaux défis tels que la topologie de réseau dynamique et le manque de visibilité. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons un algorithme d’auto-modélisation et un processus de diagnostic actif pour relever ces défis. Nous apprenons et validons le modèle défini par injection de pannes. Nous appliquons notre approche au use-case "virtual Ip Multimedia (vIMS)". network functions virtualization (NFV) is one promising attempt at solving some of the 5G challenges. NFV is about running network functions as virtualized workloads on commodity hardware. This may optimize deployment costs and simplify the life cycle management, but it introduces new challenges such as the dynamic network topology and the lack of visibility. In this thesis, we propose a self-modeling algorithm and an active diagnosis process to face these challenges. We define a dependency model learned from faults injection. The self-modeling and the active diagnosis approach was applied to the real-world virtual Ip Multimedia Subsystem (vIMS) use-case.

According to forecasts, around 10 billion connected devices in the world will exchange data over the Internet by 2028 and the significant connections increase threatens to congest terrestrial networks. These devices will mainly be embedded, controlled by smart software and operated in the cloud, integrating the Internet of Things ecosystem. Additionally, current terrestrial infrastructures do not meet novel IoT requirements: remote access areas, multiple network domains crossing and adaptable latency and bandwidth. To provide global and ubiquitous coverage, the 3GPP standardizes in rel-17 the concept of Non-Terrestrial-networks. The term includes, among others, Non-Terrestrial nodes such as GEO, MEO and LEO satellites. Lately, LEO satellites have contributed to consolidate the New Space industry opening new business opportunities by providing services using low-cost CubeSats. Despite offering important benefits compared to GEO (e.g. lower latency and propagation loss), LEO still has challenges to face related to communication discontinuity (intermittent satellite-to-ground links). Global region coverage is achieved through satellite constellations;however, the main concern is the non-guarantee of simultaneous contact from UE to the Ground Station network via the satellite. While 3GPP rel-17 specs have centered on the specification of satellites using transparent payload, the use of regenerative payloads has not precluded and has a central role in the technology roadmap. Regenerative payloads envision to embark part of the NF within the satellite, giving multiple enhancements (e.g. lower latencies, Store-and-Forward operation, in-satellite local loop communications and edge computing). Onboard functions may include radio access functions, such as eNB/gNB, as well as core NF, which enables direct satellite response to UE. 5G EPC over network functions virtualization (NFV) complemented with Software Defined networking (SDN) framework is envisioned to be a novel paradigm of network architecture that supports a variety of access technologies and solves growth challenges and requirements such as seamless mobility management. Using cloud and virtualization, it manages and orchestrates the execution of mobile core servers on virtual machines. SDN can be used to segregate the network allowing multiple virtual mobile networks to co-exist on a physical datacenter network. This design is free of redundant functionality and inter-node interfaces that increase costs and reduce performance in hardware-based packet cores. With proposed vEPC (Virtualized Evolved Packet Core) framework we could construct a network of any-size with linear performance scaling on general-purpose servers for cost-effective business growth.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) is one of the most common but destructive kind of cyberattacks. The DDoS attack traffic vastly includes the SYN packets. To handle excessive DDoS traffic without large impact on the benign traffic, it is important to allocate sufficient resource for the defense. With the support from network Function virtualization (NFV) technology, this can be done in a significantly lower lower cost, with higher flexibility. In this work, we propose a DDoS defense mechanism based on network Function virtualization platform, which is capable to balance with the attack load. Our proposed mechanism uses dynamic network agents to intercept packets when the system experiences DDoS attack. In particular, we focus on the mechanism that deploys virtual agents dynamically according to the attack strength. The corresponding load-balancing algorithm dynamically determines the number of agents to allocate for defending the attack traffic. Our simulation results demonstrate that the mechanism can successfully defeat the DDoS attacks with different attack intensities, while it incurs minimal performance degradation on the benign traffic and keeps the increase in the server's response time sufficiently low compared to that of a successful DDoS attack.
