This paper presents the design and implementation of the network protocols for a digital settop box used in an ITV system. For a full-service network, heterogeneous traffic including real-time MPEG video and non-real-time user data must be sent through the same network and then handled by the settop box. To maintain the service quality while keeping the overall hardware cost down is a very challenging task. This paper first presents the software architecture of the OS-9/DAVID based settop box with emphasis on the network layers. Based on a trial system in Taiwan, testing of the system performance is conducted to further improve the settop box design.

A wireless ad hoc network is a collection of specific infrastructureless mobile nodes forming a temporary network without any centralized administration. A user can move anytime in an ad hoc scenario and, as a result, such a network needs to have routing protocols which can adopt dynamically changing topology. To accomplish this, a number of ad hoc routing protocols have been proposed and implemented, which include dynamic source routing (DSR), ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing, and temporally ordered routing algorithm (TORA). Although considerable amount of simulation work has been done to measure the performance of these routing protocols, due to the constant changing nature of these protocols, a new performance evaluation is essential. Accordingly, in this paper, we analyze the performance differentials to compare the above-mentioned commonly used ad hoc network routing protocols. We also analyzed the performance over varying loads for each of these protocols using OPNET Modeler 10.5. Our findings show that for specific differentials, TORA shows better performance over the two on-demand protocols, that is, DSR and AODV. Large-scale data centers enable the new era of cloud computing and provide the core infrastructure to meet the computing and storage requirements for both enterprise information technology needs and cloud-based services. To support the ever-growing cloud computing needs, the number of servers in today's data centers are increasing exponentially, which in turn leads to enormous challenges in designing an efficient and cost-effective data center network. With data availability and security at stake, the issues with data center networks are more critical than ever. Motivated by these challenges and critical issues, many novel and creative research works have been proposed in recent years. In this paper, we investigate in data center networks and provide a general overview and analysis of the literature covering various research areas, including data center network interconnection architectures, network protocols for data center networks, and network resource sharing in multitenant cloud data centers. We start with an overview on data center networks and together with its requirements navigate the data center network designs. We then present the research literature related to the aforementioned research topics in the subsequent sections. Finally, we draw the conclusions.

The wide deployment of high-speed computer networks has made distributed systems ubiquitous in today's connected world The machines on which the distributed applications are hosted are heterogeneous in nature, the applications often run legacy code without the availability of their source code, the systems are of very large scales, and often have soft real-time guarantees. In this paper, we target the problem of online detection of disruptions through a generic external entity called Monitor that is able to observe the exchanged messages between the protocol participants and deduce any ongoing disruption by matching against a rule base composed of combinatorial and temporal rules. The Monitor architecture is application neutral, with the rule base making it specific to a protocol. To make the detection infrastructure scalable and dependable, we extend it to a hierarchical Monitor structure. The infrastructure is applied to a streaming video application running on a reliable multicast protocol called TRAM installed on the campus wide network. The evaluation brings out the scalability of the Monitor infrastructure and detection coverage under different kinds of faults for the single level and the hierarchical arrangements.

Starting from the idea that 'multimedia' mainly means the integrated manipulation of information, and hence the independent handling of each separate information is not a sufficient result, an enhanced architecture for UMTS system, involving the low levels (Physical, MAC, DDL, and network) of the protocol stack, is here proposed for the transport of wireless multimedia. To achieve the best performance from the designed architecture, a Synchronisation Sub-layer is introduced at the network level with the main aim of assuring over the air interface a 'rough' inter-stream synchronisation, used as a first step before a 'fine' end-to-end synchronisation being performed by the highest protocol levels. A detailed description of the new functions for each level, their basic algorithms, their location in the protocol stack, as well as the signalling exchange among modules implementing them and between network and user sides are given.

In this research, we propose a high-speed simulator for rapidly determining protocol performance of a sensor network comprised of many terminals. We have developed this simulator by using GPGPU technology[1], in which widely used GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) are applied to general-purpose computing. This simulator executes at high-speed by using the parallelism that is a structural feature of GPUs, and enables simultaneous execution of simulations with various values of the parameters in the protocol. The result is high-speed simulations using inexpensive hardware which previously could only be processed using a supercomputer.

Controllers area networks (CAN) and other established networks are facing stiff competition from the time triggered protocol (TTP) and Flexray as automotive and automation network protocols. The TTP address similar requirements but apply subtly different design strategies due to trade-offs between conflicting safety, composability, and flexibility. Unlike traditional CAN's event triggered architecture, Flexray and TTP employ TDMA media access to implement a time-triggered communication system. TTP includes multiple error recovery mechanisms and also identifies transmission failures. Both protocols support flexile combinations of bus, star, or multiple-star configurations and run as fast as 10 Mbps over copper.

This work proposes the XML-based Multi Protocol Language (XMPL), a new XML-based language suitable for a protocol description in terms of protocol logic, protocol message set, and protocol data structures. In addition, we also present the XML-based Multi Protocol Framework (XMPF), a new software protocol engine that is designed to be configured by protocol specifications contained in native XMPL files. As a consequence XMPF is a software tool that can support concurrently different protocols without the need to write specific code for each of them. A testbed implementing the Generalized Multi Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) protocol suite is used to validate the adopted XML approach and to evaluate its performance. At the current stage of development, XMPF appears suitable to support signaling protocols with low-to-medium messaging rate.
