This paper investigates theoretical properties of a well-known L~1 grasp quality measure Q whose approximation Q_l~- is commonly used for the evaluation of grasps and where the precision of Q_l~- depends on an approximation of a cone by a convex polyhedral cone with l edges. We prove the Lipschitz continuity of Q and provide an explicit Lipschitz bound that can be used to infer the stability of grasps lying in a neighbourhood of a known grasp. We think of Q_l~- as a lower bound estimate to Q and describe an algorithm for computing an upper bound Q~+. We provide worst-case error bounds relating Q and Q_l~-. Furthermore, we develop a novel grasp hypothesis rejection algorithm which can exclude unstable grasps much faster than current implementations. Our algorithm is based on a formulation of the grasp quality evaluation problem as an optimization problem, and we show how our algorithm can be used to improve the efficiency of sampling based grasp hypotheses generation methods.

Inertial stochastic dynamics. II. Influence of inertia on slow kinetic processes of supercoiled DNA

We apply our new algorithms presented in the companion paper (LTID: long-time-step inertial dynamics, IBD: inertial Brownian dynamics) for mass-dependent Langevin dynamics (LD) with hydrodynamics, as well as the standard Brownian dynamical (BD) propagator, to study the thermal fluctuations of supercoiled DNA minicircles. Our DNA model accounts for twisting, bending, and salt-screened electrostatic interactions. Though inertial relaxation times are on the order of picoseconds, much slower kinetic processes are affected by the Brownian (noninertial) approximation typically employed. By comparing results of LTID and IBD to those generated using the standard (BD) algorithm, we find that the equilibrium fluctuations in writhing number, Wr, and radius of gyration, R-g, are influenced by mass-dependent terms. The autocorrelation functions for these quantities differ between the BD simulations and the inertial LD simulations by as much as 10%. In contrast, when the nonequilibrium process of relaxation from a perturbed state is examined, all methods (inertial and diffusive) yield similar results with no detectable statistical differences between the mean folding pathways. Thus, while the evolution of an ensemble toward equilibrium is equally well described by the inertial and the noninertial methods, thermal fluctuations are influenced by inertia. Examination of such equilibrium fluctuations in a biologically relevant macroscopic property-namely the two-site intermolecular distance-reveals mass-dependent behavior: The rate of juxtaposition of linearly distant sites along a 1500-base pair DNA plasmid, occurring over time scales of milliseconds and longer, is increased by about 8% when results from IBD are compared to those from BD. Since inertial modes that decay on the picosecond time scale in the absence of thermal forces exert an influence on slower fluctuations in macroscopic properties, we advocate that IBD be used for generating long-time trajectories of supercoiled DNA

Conventional and Novel Spinal Stimulation algorithms: Hypothetical Mechanisms of Action and Comments on Outcomes

ObjectiveSpinal cord stimulation (SCS) emerged as a direct clinical spin-off from the Gate Control Theory from 1965. Over the last decade, several new modes of SCS have appeared. This review discusses these novel techniques and their hypothetical mechanisms of action. Material and MethodsA recent literature search on SCS coupled with the most recent data from poster presentations and congress lectures have been used to illustrate new hypothetical ways of modulating pain. ResultsSeveral physiological and neurochemical mechanisms for conventional paresthetic SCS have been described in detail. However, much less is known about the novel SCS modes of action. One new algorithm utilizes very high frequencies (up to 10 kHz) intended for direct stimulation of dorsal horns at the T9-T10 level to treat both low back pain and leg pain. Another technique uses bursts of impulses with a high internal frequency delivered to the dorsal spinal cord with a frequency of 40 Hz. Both of these therapies intend to be subparesthetic and effective both for neuropathic and nociceptive pain components. During the last few years, more moderate changes in SCS parameters have been tried in order to increase the amount of electric charge passed from the lead to the neural tissue. This strategy, called high density SCS, utilizes frequencies up to 1200 Hz or long pulse widths. ConclusionsThe present SCS therapies have developed beyond the Gate Control Concept. new hypotheses about mechanisms of action are presented and some improved results are discussed.

Impact of consistent atrial pacing algorithm on premature atrial complexe number and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation recurrences in brady-tachy syndrome: A randomized prospective cross over study

Aim of the study: The Consistent Atrial Pacing (CAP) algorithm has been designed to achieve a high percentage of atrial pacing to suppress paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The aim of our study was to compare the impact of DDDR+CAP versus DDDR pacing on paroxysmal atrial fibrillation recurrences and triggers in patients with Brady-Tachy Syndrome. Methods: 61 patients, 23 M and 38 F, mean age 75 +/-9 y, affected by Brady-Tachy Syndrome, implanted with a DDDR pacemaker, were randomized to DDDR or DDDR+CAP pacing with cross over of pacing modality after 1 month. Results: 78% of patients in DDDR pacing and 73% in DDDR+CAP pacing (p=n.s.) were free from symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation recurrences. During DDDR+CAP pacing, the atrial pacing percentage increased from 77 +/- 29% to 96 +/-7% (p <0.0001). Automatic mode switch episodes/day were 0.73 +/-1.09 in DDDR and 0.79 +/-1.14 (p=n.s.) in DDDR+CAP. In patients with less than 50% of atrial pacing during DDDR, automaticmode switch episodes/day decreased during DDDR+CAP from 1.13 +/-1.59 to 0.23 +/-0.32 (p <0.05) and in patients with less than 90% from 1.23 +/-1.27 to 0.75 +/-1.10 (p <0.001). The number of premature atrial complexes per day decreased during DDDR+CAP from 2665 +/- 4468 to 556 +/- 704 (p <0.02). Conclusion: CAP algorithm allowed continuous overdrive atrial pacing without major side effects. Triggers of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation induction, such as premature atrial complexes, were critically decreased. Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation episodes were reduced in patients with atrial pacing percentage lower than 90 % during DDDR pacing.

HX-MS2 for high performance conformational analysis of complex protein states

Water-mediated hydrogen exchange (HX) processes involving the protein main chain are sensitive to structural dynamics and molecular interactions. Measuring deuterium uptake in amide bonds provides information on conformational states, structural transitions and binding events. Increasingly, deuterium levels are measured by mass spectrometry (MS) from proteolytically generated peptide fragments of large molecular systems. However, this bottom-up method has limited spectral capacity and requires a burdensome manual validation exercise, both of which restrict analysis of protein systems to generally less than 150 kDa. In this study, we present a bottom-up HX-MS2 method that improves peptide identification rates, localizes high-quality HX data and simplifies validation. The method combines a new peptide scoring algorithm (WUF, weighted unique fragment) with data-independent acquisition of peptide fragmentation data. Scoring incorporates the validation process and emphasizes identification accuracy. The HX-MS2 method is illustrated using data from a conformational analysis of microtubules treated with dimeric kinesin MCAK. When compared to a conventional Mascot-driven HX-MS method, HX-MS2 produces two-fold higher /-tubulin sequence depth at a peptide utilization rate of 74%. A Mascot approach delivers a utilization rate of 44%. The WUF score can be constrained by false utilization rate (FUR) calculations to return utilization values exceeding 90% without serious data loss, indicating that automated validation should be possible. The HX-MS2 data confirm that N-terminal MCAK domains anchor kinesin force generation in kinesin-mediated depolymerization, while the C-terminal tails regulate MCAK-tubulin interactions.

MACCS is a Multi-Mission Atmospheric Correction and Cloud Screening software. This tool has been developed by CNES. It is based on a multi-temporal algorithm that makes an optimized use of image time series to characterize the atmosphere and detect clouds. We have generated level-2 Sentinel-2 products on various targets over Europe but also over deserts or urban areas with high aerosol optical thickness (AOT). The results are validated by comparison to in-situ measurements from AERONET for AOT and water vapor. We also directly validate ground reflectance using CNES La Crau photometer. Then, the joint effort of CNES and DLR to merge their algorithms MACCS and ATCOR into a so-called MAJA processing chain will be detailed, together with the future development and validation plan. Finally, the Sentinel-2 level-2 production plan will be presented in the context of THEIA land data center.

The systematic retrieval of near surface soil moisture (SSM) fields at high resolution (e.g., 0.1-1.0 km) is a challenging task that requires the exploitation of new retrieval algorithms and SAR data with advanced observational capabilities (in terms of spatial/ temporal resolution, radiometric accuracy, very large swath, long-term continuity and rapid data dissemination). The launch of the Sentinel-1 (S-1) constellation provides these capabilities and calls for the development and validation of pre-operational SSM products at high resolution. The objective of this paper is to present and initially assess a SSM retrieval algorithm developed in view of S-1 data exploitation. The activity is supported by a large scientific community engaged in fostering a more effective interaction between researchers working in the field of high and low resolution SSM retrieval.

During the last 30 years, the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) Techniques has been developed to the most efficient field simulation technique in electromagnetic field modeling. This progress is on the one side the result of the improved computer technology over the last years, but on the other side also of the development of new algorithms for an intelligent use of the computer systems and for parallel computing techniques as well as for the analysis of more complex circuits and systems (dispersive materials, meta materials etc.). In this short presentation the state of the art of FDTD simulation technique with the latest improvements shall be shortly discussed. An optimum memory access, and a multistep parallel processing of the FDTD algorithm using XPU and XPU NUMA computer hardware is discussed.

For interferometric testing of polished surfaces and wavefronts with the best physically accessible accuracy it is good to use a perfect wavefront reference originating from light diffraction by a pinhole aperture in a point-diffraction interferometer (PDI). It is evident that phase shifting (PS) interferometric measurements with the use of the PDI should be fulfilled adequately to perfectness of its wavefront reference unless high accuracy expectations will not be met. High accuracy of the reference beam phase shifting of the two-beam PDI is produced by a two staged alignment procedure being performed on-line when PS fringe patterns (frames) are being saved. This procedure is a time frequency filtering of intensity function of each pixel performed in order to extract regular sinusoids from a set of erroneous and noisy signals. The results of wavefront retrieval from the saved set of PS frames using any N bucket algorithm by the Durango software in both cases - not aligned and aligned - are compared. This research helps keep the PDI accuracy corresponding to perfectness of the wavefront diffraction reference. Also this research may help in PS measurements performed by other types of interferometers where phase shifts are realized by test part movement.

Simulation of 2D Nonlinear Manifestations in a Layered-Block Medium with Hierarchical Inclusions

The geological environment is an open system that can be influenced by external and internal factors. They can lead it to an unstable state, which, as a rule, manifests itself locally in the form of zones called dynamically active elements, by which it is possible to identify, on the one hand, potential catastrophic sources that disrupt the technological process when mining the rock massif;оn the other hand, when producing oil from wells, this process can contribute to improving the movement of oil inclusions in the plastic environment of the reservoir. These objects, both in the rock massif and in the oil reservoir, differ from the host geological environment in their structural forms, which are often hierarchical forms. The process of their nonlinear activation can be observed using borehole monitoring of acoustic longitudinal and transversal waves, for the mathematical support of which new 2D modeling algorithms have been developed in that paper using the method of integral and integro-differential equations with the inclusion of nonlinear terms in the dependence of the wave parameter on frequency. When interpreting the results of acoustic monitoring, it is necessary to use the data of such observation systems that are configured to study the hierarchical structure of the environment.
