A new and efficient algorithm for the reliable load flow solution of power network branches controlled by flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) is presented. General admittance-based models are given for series compensators, phase-shifters and tap-changers. Their inclusion in a newton-raphson load flow exhibiting quadratic convergence is described and the prowess of the algorithm is demonstrated by comparison with production-grade load flow programs where the state variables of the controllable devices are updated at the end of each newton-raphson iteration. Control coordination and initialisation strategies for the controlled branches and nodes have been thoroughly investigated.

Calculation of Extraction Equilibrium in Multi-Component System by newton-raphson algorithm

Based on the extraction equilibrium and mass balances in countercurrent extraction systems, a novel method was studied for dealing with the extraction equilibrium and the mass distribution in a multi-component(gamma-component) system. The relationships of mass distribution (x(i), y(i), i = 1, ..., lambda) between two phases were expressed by 2 lambda dimensional simultaneous equations. These simultaneous equations can be converted to a one-dimension nonlinear equation, then it was solved by newton-raphson algorithm within a few number of iteration. Compared with the regular calculation method for the 2 lambda dimensional simultaneous equations, newton-raphson algorithm can decrease the number of iteration, increase the convergence of the equations and accelerate the speed of simulation. It was verified in many multi-component systems with satisfactory results. As an example, a five-component system is demonstrated in this paper.

An efficient algorithm is presented for load-flow solutions in electrical power systems. The algorithm is based on the newton-raphson process and uses a partitioned-matrix approach to the Jacobian equation which was previously suggested for array-processor applications. It is shown that this approach is also beneficial when using conventional computer systems. The numerical method and computation techniques employed are described, and their relationship to modern computer architectures is considered. The algorithm is highly efficient for the solution of transmission networks but also has particular advantages for lower-voltage networks, and for difficult or ill conditioned load-flow problems. Computational results, obtained using minicomputer hardware, are given for a variety of networks of up to 734 nodes. The numerical method which has been developed is also applicable to other power-system problems including state estimation and dynamic simulation.

newton-raphson-based flying capacitor multilevel inverter modeling is investigated for capacitor voltage balancing. Without using voltage feedback, newton-raphson method determines the best switching pattern for maintaining nil mean current in all capacitors, hence minimizing the capacitor voltage fluctuation and eliminating certain harmonic orders. Flying capacitor multilevel inverter (FCMI) modeling is developed to work with the selective harmonic elimination (SHE) technique to obtain a programmable pulse generator for multilevel inverter commutation cell control. Theoretical results are verified by experiments and simulations for a flying capacitor four-level inverter. Results show that the proposed method does effectively eliminate a number of specific low order harmonics, and the output voltage is resulted in low total harmonic distortion and with balanced flying capacitors.

Convergence of density functional iterative procedures with a newton-raphson algorithm

State of the art first-principles calculations of electronic structures aim at finding the ground state electronic density distribution. The performance of such methodologies is determined by the effectiveness of the iterative solution of the nonlinear density functional Kohn-Sham equations. We first outline a solution strategy based on the newton-raphson method. A form of the algorithm is then applied to the simplest and earliest density functional model, i.e., the atomic Thomas-Fermi model. For the neutral atom, we demonstrate the effectiveness of a charge conserving newton-raphson iterative method for the computation, which is independent of the starting guess;it converges rapidly, even for a randomly selected normalized starting density.

Blind Separation of Nonstationary Markovian Sources Using an Equivariant newton-raphson algorithm

This letter presents a new maximum likelihood method for blindly separating linear instantaneous source mixtures, where source signals are assumed to be mutually independent, Markovian and possibly nonstationary. The proposed approach first extends previous works, by Hosseini et al. to possibly nonstationary sources using two approaches based on blocking and kernel smoothing, respectively. Moreover, to reduce time consumption, we propose an equivariant modified newton-raphson algorithm to solve the estimating equations, and we introduce polynomial estimators for the conditional score functions used in our method. Experimental results, both for artificial and real (speech) signals, prove the better performance of our method as compared to various classical blind separation algorithms.

Conventional selective harmonic elimination (SHE) based on newton-raphson (N-R) algorithm is extended to give a modified method that provides more switching angles to eliminate more harmonic order. Modified SHE method is investigated for capacitor voltage balancing in cascaded multilevel inverters considering load power factor variation. Without measuring current and capacitor voltages, as well as not using any controller and voltage feedback, the proposed strategy is capable of determining the best switching angles pattern in low switching frequency to maintain nil mean current capacitor DC-link, hence balancing the capacitor voltage and eliminating certain harmonic orders while considering inverter R,L load power factor variation. Simulation and experimental results prove the efficiency of the proposed control strategy by getting an output voltage with the desired number of levels and balanced capacitor while eliminating more harmonics.

The forward kinematics analysis of the six-degree-of-freedom(DOF) spindle-coupled road simulator (SCRS) with a complex hybrid serial-parallel mechanism(HSPM) has been performed. The forward kinematics with an efficient method is significant for control, singularity and workspace analysis of SCRS. Applying the vector matrix theory, the geometric restriction function was expressed in concise and compact form. A modified newton-raphson algorithm which could guarantee the convergence and improve the rapidity was proposed to solve the problem of the forward kinematics. The validity of forward kinematic formulations was verified through Matlab/Simulink and ADAMS. The numerical results show that the established model is accurate and the algorithm is effective which lays a good foundation for both mechanical system optimization and control scheme design of SCRS.

Congestions and undesirable power flows are an increasingly common occurrence in transmission networks. One possible measure to eliminate the congestion in network would be changing the network's topology since the stated changes the impedance of the network, which results in a change of power flow. Since the change in network topology has various implications, it can also be used as a powerful tool in optimization techniques resulting in reduction of power system losses, as well as in the already mentioned congestion management. This study deals with a new approach to the problem of changes in network topology based on application of a three-dimensional matrix of admittance, and with automating the process of power flow calculations for all possible variants of the network.

This paper presents a version of the newton-raphson (NR) algorithm that has been modified to provide a means of facilitating the power flow analysis of loop systems in the presence of current sources that rely on current controlled inverters, such as distributed generators (DGs). The modifications entail the inclusion of the current elements of current sources in the Jacobian matrix of the NR algorithm. The effect is to enable current controlled sources to be modeled directly in the power flow algorithms without the need for converting their currents to the corresponding power components, which is the traditional practice in power flow algorithms. The proposed algorithm has been tested on an IEEE 14-bus system. For loop systems with current controlled sources, the test results show that using this algorithm for power flow analysis offers enhanced accuracy.
