nosql databases have gained much attention recently. Due to utilizing Log Structured Merge (LSM) tree, they support fast write throughput and fast lookups on primary keys. Nevertheless, the implementation of the secondary index for these databases is still a challenging task. Modern data storage technologies like: flash memory or phase change memory make the situation even more difficult. The most important problems of such memory types are: limited write endurance and asymmetry between write and read latency. These limitations affect both the index structure and index modification methods. In this paper, we propose a new bulk loading of the secondary index in LSM-based stores for flash memory. The bulk loading happens when many insert operations are performed in one batch. The method works on a new LSM tree variant optimized for flash memory called Flash Aware LSM (FA-LSM) tree. To reach the optimal performance, the method can be adapted to the changing workload. We conduct several experiments which confirm that our method outperforms the traditional LSM insert strategy by about 30% while preserving high search efficiency.

One of the main advantages of the cloud computing paradigm is that it simplifies the time-consuming processes of hardware provisioning, hardware procurement and software deployment. Currently, we are witnessing a proliferation in the number of cloud-hosted applications. However, one of the important challenges of the cloud computing paradigm that may hurt the growth of this technology is the interoperability and portability between cloud platforms. The developers and cloud users may lock-in to the first cloud they choose, or face difficulties when they have to move their data or software from one cloud platform to another. In this paper, we focus on the challenge of data portability between different cloud-based data storage services. In particular, we propose a common data model and a standardized API for the new generation of cloud-based nosql databases. The initial implementation of our framework covers three of the most popular nosql systems, namely, Google Datastore, Amazon SimpleDB and MongoDB. However, our framework is designed in a flexible way that it can be easily extended to support other nosql systems. Furthermore, our framework is equipped with tools that support the conversion, transformation and exchange of the data which is stored on the supported nosql databases of the framework. Finally, we describe the design and the proof-of-concept implementation of our framework using a case study.

nosql databases have gained great popularity recently. Most of them use the Log Structured Merge (LSM) tree which provides fast write throughput and fast lookup of primary keys. Nevertheless, searching by non-key attributes is very slow because the entire LSM-tree must be scanned. To overcome this problem, the secondary index can be used. Typically, all items in the database are equally covered by the secondary index. However, this is not effective in big data stores where some items are queried very often and some never. To solve this problem, adaptive merging has been introduced. The key idea is to create a secondary index adaptively as a side-product of query processing. Consequently, the database is indexed partially depending on the query workload. The paper considers the adaptive merging of the secondary index in LSM-based stores. In this approach, the secondary index can be initiated at an arbitrary moment. Thereafter, only the requested data are inserted into the secondary index. They are retrieved from the independent immutable files created during the index initialization in a parallel way. The method can work in the dynamic database environment where database modifications interleave with user queries. The experiments show that the proposed approach outperforms traditional methods by about 30%.

Electronic health records (EHR) are considered the backbone of modern health system. When they are implemented effectively at scale, they hold the promise of enhancing healthcare services' quality and efficiency. However, EHR implementations vary based on factors such as EHR usage scenarios and technological capacities, resulting in varying volumes, complexity, and types of healthcare data. Consequently, the data storage model and query capabilities must align with these variations to achieve desired outcomes. This paper reviews the standardized EHR data persistence based on existing EHR literature and discusses its appropriateness for current healthcare usage scenarios including nationwide access. Insights into relevant literature reveal that nosql databases are more appropriate for current EHR usage scenarios. However, choosing among nosql databases' persistence depends on the use case it is intended for in addition to the standards used for data integration between systems. Accordingly, clinical usage scenarios are best served with document stores for standardized EHR following the dual model. For population-based queries, JSON stores provide a good balance between storage capacity, query performance, and flexibility. The graph-based model presents a good solution for nationwide access considering the workload and the interconnected healthcare data nature and structure. One way to respond to the conflicting data persistence requirements is the multi-model database (MMDB) concept in both its forms: polyglot and multi-model databases.

Nowadays, organizations collect vast amounts of data for future analysis. Motivated by this amount of data and requirements of Web2.0, a plethora of non-relational databases (nosql) emerged in recent years. However, several security features in relational databases (e.g., access control) have been left in non-relational management systems to be developed by the application, which can raise security breaches. This paper proposes a security model, based on the use of metadata, to provide access control for nosql graph-oriented database management system. The goal is to support the development of applications that use graph-oriented database in preserving the integrity of stored data and protect them from non-authorized access. A case study was performed as proof of concept, where the model was instantiated and implemented for Neo4j database. Results showed that access restrictions were applied correctly, avoiding unauthorized access. A schema for Neo4j was provided, once it does not have a native one.

In the era of big data and cloud, distributed key-value stores are increasingly used as building blocks of large-scale applications. Comparing to traditional relational databases, key-value stores are particularly compelling due to their low latency and excellent scalability. Many big companies, such as Facebook and Amazon, run multiple different applications and services on top of a single key-value store deployment to reduce the deployment and maintenance complexity as well as economic cost. However, every application has its performance requirement but most current key-value store systems are designed to serve every application request equally. This design works well when a single application accesses the key-value store, but it is not as good for the emerging concurrent multi-application scenario. In this paper, we present ZHT/Q, a flexible QoS (Quality of Service) fortified distributed key-value storage system for clouds and data centers. It improves the overall throughput by an order of magnitude and still satisfies different applications' latency requirements with QoS using dynamic and adaptive request batching mechanisms. The experiment results show that our new system delivers up to 28 times higher throughput than the base solution while more than 99% of requests' latency requirements are satisfied.

The coming of big data era seriously challenges many traditional database techniques and it also explains the popularity of nosql databases, Cassandra, for example. Storing data in these nosql databases is a prerequisite for applying some popular large-scale data processing frameworks such as Hadoop or Spark. In this paper, we propose a model transformation approach that transforms class diagrams into Cassandra database schemata, which make it possible to obtain larger storage capacity and large-scale data processing ability without painful database schema redesigning. To achieve this goal, meta-models of the source model and target model are built by simplifying the definition of the UML class diagram and studying the Cassandra data model respectively. An annotation system is designed to improve the transformation, i.e., a more appropriate schema for Cassandra and expected runtime performance are achieved by adding extra information about query patterns to the transformation phase. This transformation is implemented with the ATL Transformation Language (ATL).

This paper discusses a data management infrastructure framework for bridge monitoring applications. As sensor technologies mature and become economically affordable, their deployment for bridge monitoring will continue to grow. Data management becomes a critical issue not only for storing the sensor data but also for integrating with the bridge model to support other functions, such as management, maintenance and inspection. The focus of this study is on the effective data management of bridge information and sensor data, which is crucial to structural health monitoring and life cycle management of bridge structures. We review the state-of-the-art of bridge information modeling and sensor data management, and propose a data management framework for bridge monitoring based on nosql database technologies that have been shown useful in handling high volume, time-series data and to flexibly deal with unstructured data schema. Specifically, Apache Cassandra and Mongo DB are deployed for the prototype implementation of the framework. This paper describes the database design for an XML-based Bridge Information Modeling (BrIM) schema, and the representation of sensor data using Sensor Model Language (SensorML). The proposed prototype data management framework is validated using data collected from the Yeongjong Bridge in Incheon, Korea.

Traditional checkpointing techniques are facing a grave challenge when applied to multi-tenancy software-as-a-service (SaaS) systems due to the huge scale of the system state and the diversity of users' requirements on the quality of services. This paper proposes the notion of tenant level checkpointing and an algorithm that exploits Big Data techniques to checkpoint tenant's meta-data, which are widely used in configuring SaaS for tenant-specific features. The paper presents a prototype implementation of the proposed technique using nosql database Couchbase and reports the experiments that compare it with traditional implementation of checkpointing using file systems. Experiments show that the Big Data approach has a significantly lower latency in comparison with the traditional approach.
