nosql databases, such as HBase or Cassandra employ weak consistency models to provide good scalability and availability. However, they often lack functionality that would help programmers reason about the correctness of their applications. Notably, they do not support consistent batch operations that could be used for important tasks, such as batch updates or maintaining secondary indexes. Some systems add transaction support to nosql databases. However, they often bring much overhead to existing single-row operations. This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for supporting batch operations on existing nosql databases. It reuses the existing local timestamp and adds a global timestamp to ensure batch operations' consistency. Our implementation based on HBase shows that compared to transactional systems, our algorithm improves the throughput of batch operations by up to 2x. Meanwhile, the latency of single-row operations only increases by around 12%. In comparison, other transactional systems increase their latency by over 3x.

The emergence of nosql databases and polyglot persistence demands to address classical research topics in the context of new data models and database systems. Schema evolution is a crucial aspect in database management to which limited attention has been paid for nosql systems. The definition of a taxonomy of changes is a central issue in the design of any schema evolution approach. Proposed taxonomies of changes for nosql databases have considered simple data models, which significantly reduce the set of considered schema change operations. In this paper, we present a unified logical data model that includes aggregation and reference relationships, and takes into account the structural variations that can occur in schemaless nosql stores. For this data model, we introduce a new taxonomy of changes with operations not considered in the existing proposed taxonomies for nosql. A schema definition language will be used to create schemas that conform to the generic data model, and a database-independent language, created to implement this taxonomy of changes, will be shown. We will show how this language can be used to automatically generate evolution scripts for a set of nosql stores, and validated on a case study for a real dataset.

Typical data warehouse systems are implemented either on a relational database or on a multi-dimensional database. While the former supports ROLAP operations the latter supports MOLAP. We explore a third alternative, that is, to implement a data warehouse on a nosql database. For this, we propose rules that help us move from information obtained from data warehouse requirements engineering stage to the logical model of nosql databases, giving rise to NOSOLAP (nosql OLAP). We show the advantages of NOSOLAP over ROLAP and MOLAP. We illustrate our NOSOLAP approach by converting to the logical model of Cassandra and give an example.

With the current emphasis on "Big Data", nosql databases have surged in popularity. These databases are claimed to perform better than SQL databases. In this paper we aim to independently investigate the performance of some nosql and SQL databases in the light of key-value stores. We compare read, write, delete, and instantiate operations on key-value stores implemented by nosql and SQL databases. Besides, we also investigate an additional operation: iterating through all keys. An abstract key-value pair framework supporting these basic operations is designed and implemented using all the databases tested. Experimental results measure the timing of these operations and we summarize our findings of how the databases stack up against each other. Our results show that not all nosql databases perform better than SQL databases. Some are much worse. And for each database, the performance varies with each operation. Some are slow to instantiate, but fast to read, write, and delete. Others are fast to instantiate but slow on the other operations. And there is little correlation between performance and the data model each database uses.

Nowadays, there is a growing need to collect and analyze data from different databases. Our work is part of a medical application that must allow health professionals to analyze complex data for decision making. We propose mechanisms to extract data from a data lake and store them in a nosql data warehouse. This will allow us to perform, in a second time, decisional analysis facilitated by the features offered by nosql systems (richness of data structures, query language, access performances). In this paper, we present a process to ingest data from a Data Lake into a warehouse. The ingestion consists in (1) transferring nosql DBs extracted from the Data Lake into a single nosql DB (the warehouse), (2) merging so-called "similar" classes, and (3) converting the links into references between objects. An experiment has been performed for a medical application.

This paper explores methodologies, advantages and challenges related to the use of the Information Centric Network technology for developing nosql distributed databases, which are expected to play a central role in the forthcoming IoT and BigData era. ICN services make possible to simplify the development of the database software, improve performance, and provide data-level access control. We use our findings to design a nosql spatio-temporal database, named OpenGeoBase, and evaluate its performance by using a real data set relevant to Intelligent Transport System applications.

Many contemporary applications have to deal with unexpected spikes or unforeseen peaks in demand for specific data objects so-called hotspot objects. For example in social networks, specific media items can go viral quickly and unexpectedly and therefore, properly provisioning for such behavior is not trivial. nosql databases are specifically designed for enhanced scalability, high availability, and elasticity to deal with increasing data volumes. Although existing performance benchmarking systems such as the Yahoo! Cloud Serving Benchmark (YCSB) provide support to test the performance properties of different databases under identical workloads, they lack support for testing how well these databases can cope with the above-mentioned unexpected hotspot object behaviour. To address this shortcoming and fill the research gap, we present the design and implementation of a new YCSB workload that is rooted upon a formal characterization of hotspot-based spikes. The proposed workload implements the Pitman-Yor distribution and is configurable in a number of parameters such as spike probability and data locality. As such, it allows for more extensive experimental validation of database systems. Our functional validation illustrates how the workload can be used to effectively stress-test different types of databases and we present our comparative results of benchmarking two popular nosql databases that are Cassandra and MongoDB in terms of their response to spiked workloads.

nosql databases are gaining popularity in recent times for their ability to manage high volumes of unstructured data efficiently. This necessitates such databases to have strict data security mechanisms. Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC) has been widely appreciated for its high flexibility and dynamic nature. We present an approach for integrating ABAC into nosql databases, specifically MongoDB, that typically only support Role-Based Access Control (RBAC). We also discuss an implementation and performance results for ABAC in MongoDB, while emphasizing that it can be extended to other nosql databases as well.

nosql databases are the response to the sheer volume of data being generated, stored, and analysed by modern users and applications. They are extremely scalable horizontally and store data with less rigid structures than the relational ones. nosql databases are known to compromise consistency in favour of availability, partition tolerance, and performance. Several studies evaluated the performance of these databases, but the users also need to understand how they behave in the presence of faults and quantify the impact of those faults. This paper presents an experimental evaluation of nosql databases' dependability using fault injection, which compares three widely used nosql engines based on how they perform in the presence of operator faults. The results show clearly that many times the integrity of the data is affected, even in the presence of simple faults. It is also shown how different databases handle the workloads and the faults differently, evidencing that users must carefully select the solution to use in their systems.

The column-oriented nosql systems propose a flexible and highly denormalized data schema that facilitates data warehouse scalability. However, the implementation process of data warehouses with nosql databases is a challenging task as it involves a distributed data management policy on multi-nodes clusters. Indeed, in column-oriented nosql systems, the query performances can be improved by a careful data grouping. In this paper, we present a method that uses clustering techniques, in particular k-means, to model the better form of column families, from existing fact and dimensional tables. To validate our method, we adopt TPC-DS data benchmark. We have conducted several experiments to examine the benefits of clustering techniques for the creation of column families in a column-oriented nosql HBase database on Hadoop platform. Our experiments suggest that defining a good data grouping on HBase database during the implementation of a data warehouse increases significantly the performance of the decisional queries.
