Data accumulating in data lakes can become inaccessible in the long run when its semantics are not available. The heterogeneity of data formats and the sheer volumes of data collections prohibit cleaning and unifying the data manually. Thus, tools for automated data lake analysis are of great interest. In this paper, we target the particular problem of reconstructing the schema evolution history from data lakes. Knowing how the data is structured, and how this structure has evolved over time, enables programmatic access to the lake. By deriving a sequence of schema versions, rather than a single schema, we take into account structural changes over time. Moreover, we address the challenge of detecting inclusion dependencies. This is a prerequisite for mapping between succeeding schema versions, and in particular, detecting nontrivial changes such as a property having been moved or copied. We evaluate our approach for detecting inclusion dependencies using the MovieLens dataset, as well an adaption of a dataset containing botanical descriptions, to cover specific edge cases.

With the increasing use of social networks, the storage and retrieval of videos and images has been the object of attention when it comes to performance. This study aims to evaluate the performance of nosql databases in transactions involving digital media and in the simulation of a social network, comparing results with a relational database. The results showing that the nosql databases are more efficient than relational databases in applications involving digital media.

This paper explores scalable implementation strategies for carrying out lazy schema evolution in nosql data stores. For decades, schema evolution has been an evergreen in database research. Yet new challenges arise in the context of cloud-hosted data backends: With all database reads and writes charged by the provider, migrating the entire data instance eagerly into a new schema can be prohibitively expensive. Thus, lazy migration may be more cost-efficient, as legacy entities are only migrated in case they are actually accessed by the application. Related work has shown that the overhead of migrating data lazily is affordable when a single evolutionary change is carried out, such as adding a new property. In this paper, we focus on long-term schema evolution, where chains of pending schema evolution operations may have to be applied. Chains occur when legacy entities written several application releases back are finally accessed by the application. We discuss strategies for dealing with chains of evolution operations, in particular, the composition into a single, equivalent composite migration that performs the required version jump. Our experiments with MongoDB focus on scalable implementation strategies. Our lineup further compares the number of write operations, and thus, the operational costs of different data migration strategies.

Nowadays databases have become the backbone of cloud-based applications. Cloud-based applications are used in about every industry today. Despite their popularity and wide adoption, little is still known about the energy footprint of these applications and, in particular, of their databases. Yet, reducing the energy consumption of applications is a major objective for society and will continue to be so in the near to far future. In this paper, we study the energy consumption of three databases used by cloud-based applications: MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB, through a series of experiments with three cloud-based applications (a RESTful multi-threaded application, DVD Store, and JPetStore). We also study the impact of cloud patterns on the energy consumption because databases in cloud-based applications are often implemented in conjunction with patterns. We measure the energy consumption using the Power-API tool to keep track of the energy consumed at the process-level by the variants of the cloud-based applications. We report that the choice of the databases can reduce the energy consumption of a cloud-based application regardless of the cloud patterns that are implemented.

Cloud computing has enabled the Database-as-a Service (DBaaS) model to manage large volumes of user generated data using nosql data repositories. There are several nosql implementation such as document, columnar, and key value which ensure high availability, fault tolerance and scalability to serve distinct client requirements. Nonetheless, different nosql data models may also introduce unnecessary heterogeneity in DBaaS, which further restricts the user to migrate the application services according to business or technology changes. In this paper, we propose a nosql data migration framework to foster data portability across cloud-based heterogeneous nosql data repositories. The proposed approach involves data standardisation and classification stages to render an efficient mapping, and translation between cloud-based different nosql data stores. The current implementation of the framework supports three different data models: document, columnar and graph. Moreover, the framework is meta-model driven, and therefore allows developers to extend the support for new database models. Our approach includes an online compression algorithm for data migration (document to graph) whereby a graph database requires up to 46% less space. There is also a significant reduction (37% to 55%) in the number of nodes in the compressed graph database.

nosql cloud database systems are new types of databases that are built across thousands of cloud nodes and are capable of storing and processing Big Data. nosql systems have increasingly been used in large scale applications that need high availability and efficiency but with weaker consistency. Consequently, such systems lack support for standard transactions which provide stronger consistency. This paper proposes a new multi-key transactional model which provides nosql systems with standard transaction support and stronger level of data consistency. The strategy is to supplement current nosql architecture with an extra layer that manages transactions. The proposed model is configurable where consistency, availability and efficiency can be adjusted based on application requirements. The proposed model is validated through a prototype system using MongoDB. Preliminary experiments show that it ensures stronger consistency and maintains good performance.

Netscape first provided a grand unification of sorts by offering a single, uniform interface to resources spread across the globe. Simple HTML interfaces to CGI (and later PHP) scripts provided the second grand unification-as suddenly software developers did not need to worry about client software distribution any more. Both Java and Javascript attempted (in their own ways) to enhance the degree of sophistication of the end-user experience. Protocols and technologies came and went (xml-rpc, SOAP, Java RMI, OpenLaszlo, etc.) while the typical web development solution slowly converged towards a (now traditional) LAMP stack architecture. As web development projects became more demanding, frameworks like Spring and Rails (for Ruby) demonstrated the viability of the MVC pattern and helped spawn replicas (CakePHP, Django, Grails, etc.) into other communities. Today it's fair to say that the move towards the MVC architectures was just another (spontaneous, unplanned) attempt to unify development over the web. Simplicity often tends to be a great focal point of evolution. In the last 5-6 years another type of unification became possible due to the surprising resurgence of a most unlikely candidate: Javascript. First Javascript was the glue that made possible the ideas behind HTML5 (as an entirely new set of APIs, and not just a new set of tags). Then in 2009 with the first release of *** (relying on Google's Javascript V8 engine) the creation of web servers and networking tools using JavaScript became not just possible, but also extremely efficient. These days, using MongoDB as the document database, *** as the server platform (with Express as a flexible and robust server-side web application framework) along with AngularJS (by Google) for the GUIs on the client side, developers are finally capable of creating more agile software by using a single language across all layers of application development. Buffer caching mechanisms are paramount to improve the performance of today's massive scale nosql databases. In this work, we show that in fact there is a direct and univocal relationship between the resource usage and the cache hit ratio in nosql databases. In addition, this relationship can be leveraged to build a mechanism that is able to estimate resource usage of the nodes composing the nosql cluster.

Data has increased in a large scale in various fields leading to the coin of the term Big Data. Big data is mainly used to describe enormous datasets that typically includes masses of unstructured data that may need real-time analysis. As human behaviour and personality can be captured through human-computer interaction a massive opportunity opens for providing wellness services. Through the use of interaction data, behavioral biometrics can be obtained. The usage of biometrics has increased due to several factors such as the rise of power and availability of computational power. One of the challenges in this kind of approaches has to do with handling the acquired data. The growing volumes, variety and velocity brings challenges in the tasks of pre-processing, storage and providing analytics. In this sense, the problem can be framed as a Big Data problem. In this work it is intended to provide an architecture that accommodates the data pipeline of data generated by human-computer interaction, providing real time data analytics on behavioral biometrics.

Cloud Computing has brought a great change in the way information is stored and applications run. In order for one or more clusters to work as a cloud we need a middleware framework, such as Apache Hadoop [17], that provides reliability, scalability and distributed computing. Once the infrastructure has been established, a software framework can be installed, which runs on top of it and will be the connection to communicate with the applications developed by the users. The software, in this regard, is a nosql database. This paper deals with the problem of searching data in some widespread nosql databases used in cloud computing. Two categories of nosql databases are compared;one based on columns using a column-oriented key-value store, HBase [6], and a high-available graph database, Neo4j [11]. HBase is a distributed, scalable storage system that runs on top of HDFS, and has being designed based on Google's BigTable [4]. Neo4j has being designed and developed to be a reliable database, optimized for graph structures, instead of tables, and is a robust, scalable, high performance and high available database that supports ACID transactions and queries written in Cypher language. The aim of this paper is to create a novel system that will decide when a query must be send to be executed in a key-value store or a graph database. Thus, an experimental pure performance comparison has been made between Apache HBase and Neo4j for a variety of queries, that were programmed using systems API's and Java language.
