The purpose of this research is to conduct a literature survey on various nosql Not-only-SQL) architectures. Included along with this literature survey is an experimentto do a comparison between a relational database management system (RDBMS) and a nosql DBMS. This work compares specifically MySQL and MongoDB, an RDBMS and nosql DBMS respectively, for the purposes of data migration. The migration is run on data sets for Youngstown State University''s plantEST biological database. The idea is to demonstrate the need for shifting to nosql for management of large amounts of unstructured and semi-structured data, and to observe and record the insertion speeds of both databases using this custom plantEST schema. Organizing the storing of information and data retrieval from databases is a crucial issue, which has become more critical with the spreading of cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) based applications. In fact, not only the network's traffic has increased, but also the amount of memory and the mechanisms needed to manage the so-called Big Data efficiently. Relational databases, based on SQL, are giving way to the nosql ones due to their efficiency in managing the heterogeneous information gathered from IoT environments. Such data can be stored, in a distributed manner, within the IoT network's devices or in the cloud. Hence, security and privacy concerns naturally emerge regarding access control, authentication, and authorization requirements. This paper analyzes the current state of the art of security and privacy solutions tailored to nosql databases, particularly Redis, Cassandra, MongoDB, and Neo4j stores. The paper also aims to shed light on current challenges and future research directions in the field databases' security in the IoT scenario.

Data Modeling and nosql databases - A Systematic Mapping Review

Modeling is one of the most important steps in developing a database. In traditional databases, the Entity Relationship (ER) and Unified Modeling Language (UML) models are widely used. But how are nosql databases being modeled? We performed a systematic mapping review to answer three research questions to identify and analyze the levels of representation, models used, and contexts where the modeling process occurred in the main categories of nosql databases. We found 54 primary studies where we identified that conceptual and logical levels received more attention than the physical level of representation. The UML, ER, and new notation based on ER and UML were adapted to model nosql databases, in the same way, formats such as JSON, XML, and XMI were used to generate schemas through the three levels of representation. New contexts such as benchmark, evaluations, migration, and schema generation were identified, as well as new features to be considered for modeling nosql databases, such as the number of records by entities, CRUD operations, and system requirements (availability, consistency, or scalability). Additionally, a coupling and co-citation analysis was carried out to identify relevant works and researchers.

Over the past few years, data has been growing significantly due to the advent of new connected devices, availability of bandwidth, and the emergence of new applications which utilize cloud computing infrastructure in the data centers. This increased amount of data faces many problems in terms of storage, transmission, management, and processing, etc. Therefore, the term big data has gained significant attention from researchers in recent years. The rapidly growing quantity, velocity, and variety of data require more probable and logical tools for its storage. For this purpose, the industry is highly emphasizing the development of more viable tools for the storage of big data. The traditional big data storage tools are unsuccessful in storing an enormous amount of data. Hence, the structural modifications of management mechanisms of conventional storage systems such as SQL databases to nosql databases technology are necessary to cope up with drastically increasing requirements of big data storage. The primary objective of this paper is to concentrate exclusively on designing a road map for nosql big data storage technologies, evaluate current evidence, research progresses in nosql data storage systems and their applications in various domains. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) of various studies published in recent years. We propose a framework to classify selected articles on the basis of various factors such as motivations behind big data storage, nosql techniques used for storing big data, and significant applications of big data in different domains. Furthermore, we also discuss research issues and define an outline for future research in the big data storage domain for nosql databases.

From Relational databases to nosql databases: Performance Evaluation

In nowadays applications, the amount of data in the database grows exponentially. So, the DBMS must process these huge amounts of data as fast as possible. The main aim of this study is to prove that nosql databases process big data faster than relational database. The changing in applications, user and infrastructure characteristics, mostly of the Web 2.0 domain and cloud platform, led to explosion of data sources and massive workloads. These huge amounts of data have raised the problems of storage and usability of data as the usual Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) were unable to handle the exponentially growing data on a single in house server (vertical scalability). Furthermore, the required time to process these big data is an issue. The study implements prototype which verifies performance argument. The performance evaluation compares the insertion and retrieval speeds between MongoDB as nosql database and MySQL as relational database. The benchmarking performed shows that MongoDB is faster than MySQL in the most of scenarios we chose, particularly when we deal with huge amount of data.

Transformation of Schema from Relational Database (RDB) to nosql databases

Relational database has been the de-facto database choice in most IT applications. In the last decade there has been increasing demand for applications that have to deal with massive and un-normalized data. To satisfy the demand, there is a big shift to use more relaxed databases in the form of nosql databases. Alongside with this shift, there is a need to have a structured methodology to transform existing data in relational database (RDB) to nosql database. The transformation from RDB to nosql database has become more challenging because there is no current standard on nosql database. The aim of this paper is to propose transformation rules of RDB Schema to various nosql database schema, namely document-based, column-based and graph-based databases. The rules are applied based on the type of relationships that can appear in data within a database. As a proof of concept, we apply the rules into a case study using three nosql databases, namely MongoDB, Cassandra, and Neo4j. A set of queries is run in these databases to demonstrate the correctness of the transformation results. In addition, the completeness of our transformation rules are compared against existing work.

Internet has become so widespread that most popular websites are accessed by hundreds of millions of people on a daily basis. Monolithic architectures, which were frequently used in the past, were mostly composed of traditional relational database management systems, but quickly have become incapable of sustaining high data traffic very common these days. Meanwhile, nosql databases have emerged to provide some missing properties in relational databases like the schema-less design, horizontal scaling, and eventual consistency. This paper analyzes and compares the consistency model implementation on five popular nosql databases: Redis, Cassandra, MongoDB, Neo4j, and OrientDB. All of which offer at least eventual consistency, and some have the option of supporting strong consistency. However, imposing strong consistency will result in less availability when subject to network partition events.

Several data-centric applications today produce and manipulate a large volume of data, the so-called Big Data. Traditional databases, in particular, relational databases, are not suitable for Big Data management. As a consequence, some approaches that allow the definition and manipulation of large relational data sets stored in nosql databases through an SQL interface have been proposed, focusing on scalability and availability. This paper presents a comparative analysis of these approaches based on an architectural classification that organizes them according to their system architectures. Our motivation is that wrapping is a relevant strategy for relational-based applications that intend to move relational data to nosql databases (usually maintained in the cloud). We also claim that this research area has some open issues, given that most approaches deal with only a subset of SQL operations or give support to specific target nosql databases. Our intention with this survey is, therefore, to contribute to the state-of-art in this research area and also provide a basis for choosing or even designing a relational-to-nosql data wrapping solution.

Improving security in nosql document databases through model-driven modernization

nosql technologies have become a common component in many information systems and software applications. These technologies are focused on performance, enabling scalable processing of large volumes of structured and unstructured data. Unfortunately, most developments over nosql technologies consider security as an afterthought, putting at risk personal data of individuals and potentially causing severe economic loses as well as reputation crisis. In order to avoid these situations, companies require an approach that introduces security mechanisms into their systems without scrapping already in-place solutions to restart all over again the design process. Therefore, in this paper we propose the first modernization approach for introducing security in nosql databases, focusing on access control and thereby improving the security of their associated information systems and applications. Our approach analyzes the existing nosql solution of the organization, using a domain ontology to detect sensitive information and creating a conceptual model of the database. Together with this model, a series of security issues related to access control are listed, allowing database designers to identify the security mechanisms that must be incorporated into their existing solution. For each security issue, our approach automatically generates a proposed solution, consisting of a combination of privilege modifications, new roles and views to improve access control. In order to test our approach, we apply our process to a medical database implemented using the popular document-oriented nosql database, MongoDB. The great advantages of our approach are that: (1) it takes into account the context of the system thanks to the introduction of domain ontologies, (2) it helps to avoid missing critical access control issues since the analysis is performed automatically, (3) it reduces the effort and costs of the modernization process thanks to the automated steps in the process, (4) it can be u

Natural language querying (NLQ) is an important research direction in both natural language processing and database communities. Over the past few years, using modern deep learning language generation and semantic parsing techniques to translate natural language questions to SQL queries, namely Text-to-SQL, has become a promising research topic. Despite the many limitations of using SQL queries for searching due to the predefined data structures and functionality of SQL databases, few attempts have been made beyond SQL query generation. Although there are many well-known, efficient, and scalable nosql databases and search engines, such as MongoDB and Elasticsearch, very little work has been devoted to developing NLQ tools for them and exploiting their potential. This gap motivates us to forge and explore the new research direction of NLQ on nosql databases. This vision paper aims to investigate the unique characteristics of the nosql database in the context of NLQ, examine the integration of NLQ with nosql databases, identify emerging research opportunities, and outline key challenges and potential research directions. We hope to inspire and stimulate further research investigation into adopting nosql databases for NLQ tasks.
