Software engineers can consider today a multitude of storage solutions and data formats to achieve better performance, lower cost, or even explore the power expression of a data model to develop an application. We call it polyglot access. Nevertheless, the cost of developing polyglot software increases due, for instance, to the complexity of managing multiple connections to databases and the need for training people to use different tools, models and query languages. This paper presents a scalable middleware, called WA-RDF, that provides a unique gateway to multiple nosql databases. Different from other similar ideas, WA-RDF uses the well-known abstractions of Semantic Web to store and query RDF data into key/value, document and graph databases. Moreover, WA-RDF includes workload-awareness, fragmentation and partitioning components to meet the nosql high level of scalability. An experimental evaluation shows that the approach is promising. It scaled linearly to the dataset size and query frequency growth, and outperformed a multimodel database in the tested use cases.

In rapidly evolving data-driven environments, the integration of heterogeneous data sources remains crucial. However, this heterogeneity, inherent in nosql databases, presents a significant challenge due to the diversities of the data storage and retrieval methods. This paper presents an automated database schema transformation process into the unified notation proposed in [1] where we gave a nosql databases schema integration approach. The three nosql schemas considered in this paper are Cassandra, MongoDB, and Couchbase. We use the Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques and the ATL language for each specific database. A case study focused on COVID-19 is used to validate our transformations.

Accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the rapid growth of online retail, or electronic commerce, has transformed the way consumers fulfil their needs and desires. This expansion introduced new business opportunities that expedites international market growth. The digitalization of economy and consumer behaviour necessitates advancements in technologies and the selection of a database to process incoming customer data. The exponential increase in data has also increased the demand for robust and scalable database management systems. This paper aims to select the most suitable data model for online retail industries by conducting comparative analysis between relational, graph, wide-column, key-value, and document database models. The study explores the performance, strengths, and weaknesses of each model in handling various aspects of retail and e-commerce functionalities, including order processing and customer relationship management (CRM). Each database model is rigorously tested against thousands of records to accurately assess their effectiveness and performance within the retail industry. After deliberate testing, it is discovered that relational databases outshine the other nosql databases in terms of client performance - CPU speed in GHz, the CPU utilization and memory usage in percentage, and its capacity in handling large datasets in the e-commerce industry.

A Generic Schema Evolution Approach for nosql and Relational databases

In the same way as with relational systems, schema evolution is a crucial aspect of nosql systems. But providing approaches and tools to support nosql schema evolution is more challenging than for relational databases. Not only are most nosql systems schemaless, but different data models exist without a standard specification for them. Moreover, recent proposals fail to address some key aspects related to the kinds of relationships between entities, the definition of relationship types, and the support of structural variation. In this article, we present a generic schema evolution approach able to support the most popular nosql data models (columnar, document, key-value, and graph) and the relational model. The proposal is based on the Orion language that implements a schema change operation taxonomy defined for the U-Schema unified data model that integrates nosql and relational abstractions. The consistency of the taxonomy operations is formally evaluated with Alloy, and the Orion semantics is expressed by translating operations into native code to update data and schema. Several database systems are supported, and the engine built for each of them has been validated by testing each individual SCO and refactoring study cases. A study of relative execution time of operations is also shown.

Regression based performance modeling and provisioning for nosql cloud databases

Cloud computing is a successful and emerging paradigm that supports on-demand services with pay-as-you-go model. Because of the exponential growth of data, nosql databases have been used to manage data in the cloud. In this scenario, it is fundamental for cloud providers guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) by avoiding violations to Service Level Agreement (SLA) contract while reducing the operational costs related to overprovisioning and underprovisioning. In this regard, elastic provisioning mechanisms are employed to maintain QoS by dynamically adding and removing resources to handle workload fluctuations. These mechanisms can also take more accurate provisioning decisions based on performance predictions of the cluster shrinkage and growth. Performance prediction is a challenging task since concurrent access of distributed data can cause non-linear effects on performance. This paper presents a performance modeling approach for nosql databases in terms of SLA-based metrics capable of capturing non-linear effects caused by concurrency and distribution aspects. Moreover we present a elastic provisioning strategy that takes advantage on performance models to deliver a reliable resource provisioning. We carried out experiments in order to evaluate our performance modeling and provisioning approaches. The results confirmed that our performance modeling can accurately predict throughput and SLA violations measurements under a wide range of workload settings and also that our elastic provisioning approach can ensure QoS while using resources efficiently. As one of the largest-technology penetrations, Internet of Things (IoT) has gained a considerable attention across both, research communities and industrial domains. IoT is a network of billions of connected devices that are capable of communicating over the Internet. In IoT, data is generated exponentially by different real-time applications (e.g., social network sites and sensor-based devices). The traditional relational database management technologies are inappropriate to deal with such new generation of data due to its limited processing speed, scalability issues, and limited storage capacity. The advent of Big Data requires new advanced technologies that are capable of handling (storing, retrieving and processing) large amount of unstructured data that IoT applications produce. Not Only SQL (nosql) databases emerged as a solution to overcome some limitations of the traditional relational database. Recently, many nosql databases have been announced (e.g., Cassandra, MongoDB, HBase, Apache Hadoop, Voldemort) to deal with tremendous amounts of unstructured data. These databases depend mainly on distributed algorithms for their work in the field of IoT. One of the most used distributed algorithms is Chord protocol. However, Chord algorithm is inefficient in some cases because of its way of handling messages transferred between connected devices. All the messages in Chord are passed clockwise along the Chord ring, which leads to send a huge number of redundant messages. Chord works by creating a lookup table for each node connected to the network, which generates huge number of tables that should be updated regularly with the routing information. This paper presents a proposal for implementing an enhanced version of the distributed Chord protocol using the most two popular nosql databases, namely: MongoDB and Cassandra. This paper presents a logical database design methodology for a MongoDB nosql database. Given a query, the design methodology is able to assist database designers to determine the best set of configurations of data, also known elsewhere as scheme trees, in the database such that the retrieval time of the query can be minimal or reduced. The design methodology first models an application of interest with a conceptual model. Based on our previous researches, the design methodology then generates from the conceptual model as few scheme trees as possible, which will eventually be implemented as MongoDB's collections in the database. To illustrate the design methodology, the COVID-19 data set was downloaded as an example application. The design methodology first conceptualized the data set with an Entity-Relationship model. Multiples queries were then devised to access various parts of the date set, whose executions required retrievals of the attribute values of all or some of the entity types and/or the relationship in the ER model. The design methodology then generated the best sets of scheme trees for the queries.

The explosive growth of location-based services and geospatial applications has fueled the demand for efficient spatial queries within nosql databases. While various indexing techniques exist, their performance and suitability for different query types remain debatable. This paper presents a comparative analysis of B-Tree, Hashed, and Geospatial indexing techniques in the context of nosql databases, focusing on real-world datasets and use cases like nearest neighbor search and range queries. Through comprehensive benchmarks and in-depth analysis, we evaluate the efficiency of each approach in terms of query execution time, storage overhead, and scalability. Our findings reveal that Geospatial indexes excel in nearest neighbor searches and distance-based queries, while Hashed indexes exhibit exceptional performance for point in-polygon and range queries. B-Trees offer a balanced solution for general spatial queries but struggle with high dimensional data and complex operations. This study provides valuable insights for developers and architects choosing the optimal indexing technique for their specific nosql-based geospatial applications.

Digital forensics is the procedure of collecting, analysing and providing proper documentation of all valid digital evidence from electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, cameras and networks of these devices. nosql forensics is the process of analysing and extracting data from non-relational databases, such as MongoDB, Cassandra, or Redis. nosql forensics can be used for various purposes, such as investigating cybercrimes, auditing security breaches, or recovering lost data. nosql forensics requires specialised tools and techniques to deal with the challenges of schema-less, distributed, and heterogeneous data models. In this paper, we propose a six-phase forensic investigation framework for the wide-column store nosql DBMS. Unlike previous studies that focused on specific aspects of nosql forensics, such as transaction log analysis or deleted data recovery, our framework covers the entire process of forensic investigation, from preparation to reporting. We also address the challenges of identifying and analysing distributed evidence in a nosql environment, which is different from the relational DBMS. Our framework applies to various documents as well as wide-column store nosql DBMSs, such as MongoDB, CouchDB, and Cassandra. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we conduct a case study using Cassandra as an example.

In current century data are releasing in huge amount if we will see the global trend in the area of social networking, manufacturing, marketing, healthcare, agriculture etc. data are created in huge amount. So if we are focusing on the traditional databases then they are not very much good at handling this huge amount of data in terms of volume, velocity, variety etc. This paper tries to filter out the problems in traditional databases and makes a comparison with nosql database. Big data is a term applied to a huge unit of heterogeneous data, including a typical form that are rapidly increasing in size using existing tools and approaches to process, analyze, or display. Big data is also the term that summarizes the processes, tools, and techniques used to learn from this data using tools like nosql. Now a day as compare to structured data, semi-structured and unstructured data are released in more amounts. In order to manage all types of data with a good efficiency, speed and storage we will focus on the new and advanced featured databases like nosql. We have explored four major types of nosql databases based on which industries are focusing for application development mostly. So now the demand of nosql is in peak because of involvement of big data concept in nosql to increase performance, scalability and flexibility. This paper is a fruitful research work based on the detailed comparison between traditional databases and nosql database along with their features, scopes and uses.
