For over forty years, relational databases have been the leading model for data storage, retrieval and management. However, due to increasing needs for scalability and performance, alternative systems have started being developed, namely nosql technology. With increased interest in nosql technology, as well as more use case scenarios, over the last few years these databases have been more frequently evaluated and compared. It is necessary to find if all the possibilities and characteristics of non-relational technology have been disclosed. While most papers perform mostly performance evaluation using standard benchmarks, it is nevertheless important to notice that real world scenarios, with real enterprise data, do not function solely based on performance. In this paper, we have gathered a concise and up-to-date comparison of nosql engines, their most beneficial use case scenarios from the software engineer viewpoint, their advantages and drawbacks by surveying the currently available literature.

A scalable generic transaction model scenario for distributed nosql databases

With the development of cloud computing and Internet;e-Commerce, e-Business and corporate world revenue are increasing with high rate. These areas not only require scalable and consistent databases but also require inter database transaction support. In this paper, we present, a scalable three-tier architecture along with a distributed middle-ware protocol to support atomic transactions across heterogeneous nosql databases. Our methodology does not compromise on any assumption on the accuracy of failure modalities. Hence, it is suitable for a class of heterogeneous distributed systems. To achieve such a target, our architectural model exploits an innovative methodology to achieve distributed atomic transactions. We simulate this architectural setup with different latency tests under different environments to produce reliable impact and correctness. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The complexity of building biological databases is well-known and ontologies play an extremely important role in biological databases. However, much of the emphasis on the role of ontologies in biological databases has been on the construction of databases. In this paper, we explore a somewhat overlooked aspect regarding ontologies in biological databases, namely, how ontologies can be used to assist better database retrieval. In particular, we show how ontologies can be used to revise user submitted queries for query relaxation. In addition, since our research is conducted at today's "big data" era, our investigation is centered on nosql databases which serve as a kind of "representatives" of big data. This paper contains two major parts: First we describe our methodology of building two nosql application databases (MongoDB and AllegroGraph) using GO ontology, and then discuss how to achieve query relaxation through GO ontology. We report our experiments and show sample queries and results. Our research on query relaxation on nosql databases is complementary to existing work in big data and in biological databases and deserves further exploration. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier B.V. While the concept of database schema plays a central role in relational database systems, most nosql systems are schemaless: these databases are created without having to formally define its schema. Instead, it is implicit in the stored data. This lack of schema definition offers a greater flexibility;more specifically, the schemaless databases ease both the recording of non-uniform data and data evolution. However, this comes at the cost of losing some of the benefits provided by schemas. In this article, a MDE-based reverse engineering approach for inferring the schema of aggregate-oriented nosql databases is presented. We show how the obtained schemas can be used to build database utilities that tackle some of the problems encountered using implicit schemas: a schema diagram viewer and a data validator generator are presented.

The purpose of this research is to conduct a literature survey on various nosql Not-only-SQL) architectures. Included along with this literature survey is an experimentto do a comparison between a relational database management system (RDBMS) and a nosql DBMS. This work compares specifically MySQL and MongoDB, an RDBMS and nosql DBMS respectively, for the purposes of data migration. The migration is run on data sets for Youngstown State University''s plantEST biological database. The idea is to demonstrate the need for shifting to nosql for management of large amounts of unstructured and semi-structured data, and to observe and record the insertion speeds of both databases using this custom plantEST schema. The study offers an analysis of nosql document store databases focusing on MongoDB, Couchbase, and CouchDB and includes an integrated Proof of Concept (POC) along with a research-based comparison. It begins with an overview of the evolving landscape of Database Management Systems (DBMS) highlighting the role of nosql databases in overcoming the limitations of traditional relational databases. The research includes a contextual evaluation and qualitative comparison of the three databases incorporating performance metrics to gauge their suitability for various applications. MongoDB is identified as the best in query performance (1.5 ms), transaction support, and integration with cloud platforms. Couchbase shows competitive scalability and good query performance (2.6ms) while CouchDB lacks ACID transactions, optimization, and support barriers and shows query time (6 ms), This analysis highlights each database's strengths and weaknesses providing key insights for real-world deployment.

From Relational databases to nosql databases: Performance Evaluation

In nowadays applications, the amount of data in the database grows exponentially. So, the DBMS must process these huge amounts of data as fast as possible. The main aim of this study is to prove that nosql databases process big data faster than relational database. The changing in applications, user and infrastructure characteristics, mostly of the Web 2.0 domain and cloud platform, led to explosion of data sources and massive workloads. These huge amounts of data have raised the problems of storage and usability of data as the usual Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) were unable to handle the exponentially growing data on a single in house server (vertical scalability). Furthermore, the required time to process these big data is an issue. The study implements prototype which verifies performance argument. The performance evaluation compares the insertion and retrieval speeds between MongoDB as nosql database and MySQL as relational database. The benchmarking performed shows that MongoDB is faster than MySQL in the most of scenarios we chose, particularly when we deal with huge amount of data.

Offloaded Data Processing Energy Efficiency Evaluation

The growing popularity of mobile and cloud computing raises new challenges related to energy efficiency. This work evaluates four various SQL and nosql database solutions in terms of energy efficiency. Namely, Cassandra, MongoDB, Redis, and MySQL are taken into consideration. This study measures energy efficiency of the chosen data storage solutions on a selected set of physical and virtual computing nodes by leveraging Intel RAPL (Running Average Power Limit) technology. Various database usage scenarios are considered in this evaluation including both local usage and remote offloading. Different workloads are benchmarked through the use of YCSB (Yahoo! Cloud Serving Benchmark) tool. Extensive experimental results show that (i) Redis and MongoDB are more efficient in energy consumption under most usage scenarios, (ii) remote offloading saves energy if the network latency is low and destination CPU is significantly more powerful, and (iii) computationally weaker CPUs may sometimes demonstrate higher energy efficiency in terms of J/ops. An energy efficiency measurement framework is proposed in order to evaluate and compare different database solutions based on the obtained experimental results.

Self-tuning Database Systems: A Systematic Literature Review of Automatic Database Schema Design and Tuning

Self-tuning is a feature of autonomic databases that includes the problem of automatic schema design. It aims at providing an optimized schema that increases the overall database performance. While in relational databases automatic schema design focuses on the automated design of the physical schema, in nosql databases all levels of representation are considered: conceptual, logical, and physical. This is mainly because the latter are mostly schema-less and lack a standard schema design procedure as is the case for SQL databases. In this work, we carry out a systematic literature survey on automatic schema design in both SQL and nosql databases. We identify the levels of representation and the methods that are used for the schema design problem, and we present a novel taxonomy to classify and compare different schema design solutions. Our comprehensive analysis demonstrates that, despite substantial progress that has been made, schema design is still a developing field and considerable challenges need to be addressed, notably for nosql databases. We highlight the most important findings from the results of our analysis and identify areas for future research work.
