The nosql database has showed a great improvement for large-scale datasets in terms of storage and computing. As for the conventional deployment architecture, they can obtain tremendously good performance as storage and compute components are running in the same node. Nevertheless, many nosql users have their own storage pool (e.g., OSD server pool) which provides different interfaces for different nosql databases. Many benefits are achieved from this new application scenarios, such as higher scalability, better flexibility and data maintainability. However, the physical separation of nosql application and storage nodes potentially influences the system performance. To better understand the new scenario, we take HBase, a common nosql database, as a study. HBase exploits a layered storage architecture with two main layers, a distributed database atop a distributed file system (HDFS). We perform experiments with YCSB benchmark and a new developed benchmark to evaluate the separation deployment of RegionServer and HDFS server and verify the read amplification of network I/O between them. Based on our observations, we propose a novel OSD Agent scheme consisting of HBase Local Storage Scanner and HBase Local Storage Compactor to reduce the amplification by filtering out the requested data from the data block on OSD server pool. From the simulation results, the OSD Agent can reduce the network traffic amplification from 36x-92x to 2x for HBase read operation, 1.2x-21x to 1.2x for HBase scan with column filter operation. Moreover, the OSD Agent makes the read performance less sensitive to the network bandwidth. The OSD Agent brings in great performance improvement for nosql Database on top of OSDs.

We demonstrate MigCast, a tool-based advisor for exploring data migration strategies in the context of developing nosql-backed applications. Users of MigCast can consider their options for evolving their data model along with legacy data already persisted in the cloud-hosted production database. They can explore alternative actions as the financial costs are predicted respective to the cloud provider chosen. Thereby they are better equipped to assess potential consequences of imminent data migration decisions. To this end, MigCast maintains an internal cost model, taking into account characteristics of the data instance, expected workload, data model changes, and cloud provider pricing models. Hence, MigCast enables software project stakeholders to remain in control of the operative costs and to make informed decisions evolving their applications.

Apache Cassandra has emerged as one of the most widely adopted nosql databases. However, there is still a limited understanding on how to optimally operate Cassandra in the cloud using autoscaling methods, by which resources can be scaled up or down to reduce operational costs and meet service-level objectives (SLOs). To address this limitation, we present PAX, a partition-aware elastic resource management system for Apache Cassandra. PAX uses low-overhead query sampling and knowledge of the data-partitioning across the nodes to automatically adapt capacity in Cassandra clusters. Differently from existing autoscaling methods for Cassandra, which incur large acquisition times for new nodes, PAX exploits Cassandra's hinted handoff mechanism and a shared hints storage to minimize the time needed to acquire a node into the cluster. We propose a reactive and a proactive implementation of PAX and compare their performance against different workloads with varying intensities and item popularity distributions, finding that the proactive version significantly reduces SLO violations.

In the past five years, a successful first-year mentoring programme at Tecnico Lisboa's Taguspark campus promoted by Nucleo de Apoio ao Estudante - Taguspark (NAPE-TP) was brought into play. Nevertheless, the relationship between mentors (mostly second-year students) and mentees (first-year students) tends to weaken after the first academic weeks of the semester. This problem can be addressed with the creation of a consistent and unique communication channel between all the parties involved in this programme This work presents NAPP, a novel mentoring software solution for first-year mentorship programmes, that enhances the communication between mentors and mentees while providing study guidance tools for mentees. NAPP is composed of two key components, a cross-platform mobile application and a web application that is used as a high level performance analysis tool by the programme's coordinator. These components were developed using state of the art technologies like the Ionic Framework using AngularJS, and the nosql databases CouchDB and PouchDB.

Data accumulating in data lakes can become inaccessible in the long run when its semantics are not available. The heterogeneity of data formats and the sheer volumes of data collections prohibit cleaning and unifying the data manually. Thus, tools for automated data lake analysis are of great interest. In this paper, we target the particular problem of reconstructing the schema evolution history from data lakes. Knowing how the data is structured, and how this structure has evolved over time, enables programmatic access to the lake. By deriving a sequence of schema versions, rather than a single schema, we take into account structural changes over time. Moreover, we address the challenge of detecting inclusion dependencies. This is a prerequisite for mapping between succeeding schema versions, and in particular, detecting nontrivial changes such as a property having been moved or copied. We evaluate our approach for detecting inclusion dependencies using the MovieLens dataset, as well an adaption of a dataset containing botanical descriptions, to cover specific edge cases.

Transport is one the aspects that most critically affects the population's life conditions, particularly in the case of those people with various special mobility needs. In spite of the existence of numerous Websites that provide information about public transport services, there is a lack of open data regarding accessible public transportation systems. We are, therefore, working on the development of a technological framework for the processing, management and exploitation of open data, with the goal of promoting accessibility to city public transport, which is taking place within the framework of the Access@city project. In this paper we specifically focus on the problem of designing the nosql document database with which to manage the information concerning accessible routes obtained by means of crowdsourcing techniques.

We study how software engineers design and evolve their domain model when building applications against nosql data stores. Specifically, we target Java projects that use object-nosql mappers to interface with schema-free nosql data stores. This is a popular software stack. Given the source code of ten real-world database applications, we extract the nosql database schema thus implied in the application code. We can confirm that schemas are generally denormalized, as is recommended practice in data modeling for nosql data stores. Further, we analyze the entire project history, and with it, the evolution history of the nosql database schema. We show that nosql schemas evolve in all analyzed projects, and observe a comparatively high frequency in schema changes. In doing so, we conduct the so far largest empirical study on nosql schema design and evolution.

A large amount of data are generated every moment by connected objects creating Internet of Things (IoT). These data are difficult to handle using traditional databases leading to use nosql databases. These latter have achieved a large popularity thanks to their high performance, flexibility in scaling, and high availability. But, which nosql database is the most suitable for IoT applications? In this paper, we discuss the main requirements of IoT data management, and we compare five of the most popular nosql databases namely, Redis, Cassandra, MongoDb, Couchbase and Neo4j, in accordance with IoT data management requirements, in order to find the most suitable nosql database for IoT applications.

Collaborative development is becoming crucial and widespread across various sectors. When teams of experts come together to develop ideas, designs, models, implementations, projects, and systems, the collaborative process significantly boosts performance and ensures superior results. Participatory modeling (PM) is a methodology that promotes stakeholder involvement, combines research and knowledge, fosters trust and consensus, and enhances cross-disciplinary collaboration to tackle complex problems. Applying participatory modeling to nosql database design meets a critical need for addressing both organizational and human aspects, as well as their practical implementations in database design. In this paper, we introduce the ongoing development of the BRIDGE framework (Bi-directional Real-time Interactive Design Gateway for Engagement), a participatory approach for nosql database design. BRIDGE incorporates dynamic, two-way feedback loops within an interactive, real-time platform, making the design process more fluid and responsive. This framework not only deepens stakeholder engagement, but also improves the flexibility and clarity of database models, ensuring they cater to the varied and changing needs of businesses. With BRIDGE, stakeholders are actively involved as co-designers, directly shaping the development path to enhance both functionality and performance. Given that the nosql ecosystem requires varied layers of expertise, and is driven by industry guidelines and best practices, a stakeholder-driven approach encompassing all perspectives, requirements, and needs, could potentially offer a novel method to approach nosql database design.
