Recent advances in healthcare have provided a wide range of medical devices and biosensors that collect biomedical data from patients during different monitoring phases. At the same time, data repositories and data-oriented frameworks are needed to store, manage, analyze, and act upon the collected data to enable a wide range of healthcare services. However, storing raw medical data (e.g., hospital visits, vital signs) with no context offers incomplete information to the medical staff and facilities to efficiently offer services. Along with the raw data challenge, given the heterogeneity of the collected medical data and the medical services to be offered, utilizing one form of data repository can be challenging. In this paper, we propose layered data pipeline that targets these challenges through two main aspects. The first aspect is to build Context-aware Electronic Health Records (EHRs) that link the collected medical data with the context for a more concrete and profound image of the patient's medical status. The second aspect is to build a data pipeline that utilizes a set of databases to store, manage, and represent the EHRs and specific sub-portions to enable both patient-oriented and collective-oriented healthcare services. Patient-oriented services focus on individual EHRs for customized and tailored healthcare assistance, while collective-oriented services consider an anonymous collection of EHRs linked together to build a knowledge graph. The proposed system comprises three layers, where each layer builds parts of the context-aware EHRs and hosts certain stages of the data pipeline. The system is a work in progress, and in this paper, we discuss the main components of the proposed system, define the high-level structure of context-aware EHR, and present the proposed data pipeline through a proof-of-concept implementation for certain features.

Not Only SQL (nosql) is a critical technology that is scalable and provides flexible schemas, thereby complementing existing relational database technologies. Although nosql is flourishing, present solutions lack the features required by enterprises for critical missions. In this paper, we explore solutions to the data recovery issue in nosql. Data recovery for any database table entails restoring the table to a prior state or replaying (insert/update) operations over the table given a time period in the past. Recovery of nosql database tables enables applications such as failure recovery, analysis for historical data, debugging, and auditing. In this paper, we first identify the design and implementation issues with regard to the data recovery problem for nosql databases, including time length of recovery, fault tolerance, scalability, memory constraint, software compatibility, and quality of recovery. Particularly, our study emphasizes on columnar nosql databases. We then propose and evaluate four solutions to address the data recovery problem in nosql; each solution has its pros and cons. We implement our solutions based on Apache HBase, a popular nosql database in the Hadoop ecosystem widely adopted by industry. Our implementations are extensively benchmarked with an industrial nosql benchmark under real environments. Specifically, our research findings and implementations in this paper have been contributed to and integrated with Apache HBase for global distribution.

The Corporate's interest of cloud computing based system continues accelerating due to its efficiency, promising performance and better scalability. Most of these systems use the Not Only SQL (nosql) database. The database has different characteristics from the relational database. Data migration from a relational database to a column-oriented nosql database (COnosqlDB) can use the concept of Multiple Nested Schema. The concept has proved to be effectual to boost query performance but at the cost of high data redundancy. This study proposes a new conversion method called Enhanced Multiple Nested Schema, developed of Multiple Nested Schema by adding rules to identify and eliminate inter-table transitive dependency-one of the major causes of data redundancy. We aim to reduce data redundancy in COnosqlDB Schema. The objective is to generate COnosqlDB schema much better. Previous research did not pay attention to transitive dependency problems when doing schema conversion. The proposed conversion mechanism produces an efficient COnosqlDB database schema. However, the schema guarantees complete data and allows queries quickly. This means that the additional rules proposed in this study can improve the COnosqlDB schema generated using the previous method.

The systems helping us nowadays in some sectors, including health service, transportation, medicine, and many others, have one common thing: data. The data in the mentioned sectors help with the support of decision making, to manage systems, and to prevent dangerous situations. To the increasing amount of the data, a growing demand was related. In the current modern era, the data has become a commodity, and the data are traded like goods in many cases The systems, working with the massive amount of the data, do not only with values already in the system but also with the system's data in real-time. So, they influence many evaluation systems, respectively, they modify various statistics. The real data play a crucial part during transformation processes and the mutual affecting of the data. This article will create a synchronization barrier that will be used to influence the data during the data transformation from a relational database to a nonrelational database. The purpose of this barrier is to reduce the time needed for a data change from source database to target database and, by this, to reduce the number of operations that would be required to do after finishing the process just with incoming values.

Electronic health records (EHR) are considered the backbone of modern health system. When they are implemented effectively at scale, they hold the promise of enhancing healthcare services' quality and efficiency. However, EHR implementations vary based on factors such as EHR usage scenarios and technological capacities, resulting in varying volumes, complexity, and types of healthcare data. Consequently, the data storage model and query capabilities must align with these variations to achieve desired outcomes. This paper reviews the standardized EHR data persistence based on existing EHR literature and discusses its appropriateness for current healthcare usage scenarios including nationwide access. Insights into relevant literature reveal that nosql databases are more appropriate for current EHR usage scenarios. However, choosing among nosql databases’ persistence depends on the use case it is intended for in addition to the standards used for data integration between systems. Accordingly, clinical usage scenarios are best served with document stores for standardized EHR following the dual model. For population-based queries, JSON stores provide a good balance between storage capacity, query performance, and flexibility. The graph-based model presents a good solution for nationwide access considering the workload and the interconnected healthcare data nature and structure. One way to respond to the conflicting data persistence requirements is the multi-model database (MMDB) concept in both its forms: polyglot and multi-model databases.

Currently, the development of data has increased rapidly, Solutions are needed to be able to manage data efficiently, one that can be offered is to utilize the database. The biggest decision in selecting a database is to select between SQL or nosql. MySQL is a database that uses SQL as a query language, consists of tables that store data in the form of columns and rows, then the new format database nosql, appeared, it is suitable for handling large amounts of data in a variety of formats. Neo4j is one of nosql that is widely used, it is a graph database which provides an easy way to visualize data by storing data in the form of nodes that are connected by edges. In this paper, we compared the performance of MySQL and Neo4j databases in terms of memory usage and execution time, also we presented the flexibility of the databases using P. The results show that MySQL has a faster execution time than Neo4j, although, both these databases have the same time complexity. It is also known that Neo4j has a higher memory usage than MySQL. But Neo4j has better flexibility than MySQL.

Schema evolution is a timeless topic in database research. However, there is only a limited amount of research regarding benchmarking of nosql schema evolution systems available. To compare schema evolution systems regarding their overall capabilities and their efficiency to evolve schemas and migrate data, a standardized benchmark is required. In this article, we propose a conceptual framework for a nosql schema evolution benchmark with all required components. Beside the benchmark schema and its data sets, we provide the evolution workloads and the metrics as the benchmark's centerpiece in detail.

The nosql database has showed a great improvement for large-scale datasets storage and compute. As for the conventional deployment architecture, they can obtain tremendously good performance as storage and compute are running in the same node. Nevertheless, many nosql users have their own storage pool (e.g., OSD server pool) which provides different interfaces for different nosql databases. Many benefits are achieved from this new application scenarios, such as higher scalability, better flexibility and data maintainability. However, the physical separation of nosql application and storage nodes potentially influences the system performance. To better understand the new scenario, we take HBase, a common nosql database, as a study. HBase exploit a layered storage architecture with two main layers, a distributed database atop a distributed file system (HDFS). We perform experiments with YCSB benchmark and a new developed benchmark to evaluate the separation deployment of RegionServer and HDFS server and verify the read amplification of network I/O between them. Based on our observations we propose a novel OSD Agent direction consisting of HBase Local Storage Scanner and HBase Local Storage Compactor to reduce the amplification by filtering out the requested data from the data block on OSD server pool. From the simulation results, the OSD Agent can reduce the network traffic amplification from 36x-92x to 1.7x for HBase read operation, 1.2x-21x to 1.2x for HBase scan with column filter operation. Moreover, the OSD Agent makes the read performance less sensitive to the network bandwidth. The OSD Agent brings in great performance improvement for nosql Database on top of OSDs.

Most methods to test the consistency of data in relational databases are based on checking the integrity of the data through testing of the schema. However, in nosql databases, there is no schema and the data is denormalized, so we need new methods to test the consistency of the database. One of these nosql databases is Cassandra, where each table is created to satisfy one query. As the same information could be retrieved by several queries, this information may be found in several tables. In these cases, whenever there is a change of the values of a row in a table, the consistency could be affected. In this thesis, we propose a preventive approach to this problem, where we test the consistency of the data by doing a static analysis of the Cassandra tables when there is a change of the data that could affect the consistency. To achieve this, we will use a conceptual model to help us in the static analysis.

Data migration is simply a process of transforming data from a source database to target database. Companies are moving their database from one database (e.g., RDBMS) to another new one (e.g., nosql) because of many reason such as new database can handle more data, that could be fast, scalable etc. There are various tools and methods such as, mongify [1], mongoimport [2], sqoop [3] etc. These are available for database migration from RDBMS to nosql databases. nosql uses document model, graph model, key-value etc., as compared to RDBMS databases. nosql was primarily designed for storing and retrieving a large amount of data. In this paper, we have proposed a database migration model, which can migrate real-time as well as old data in a parallel way. The proposed model is implemented for MySQL (RDBMS) to MongoDB document database in Java. The prototype migrates database instance at a particular time (Snapshot of database) as well as live data in a parallel way. Finally, our experimental evaluation of snapshot and live data migration shows the higher performance as compared to other methods.
